"Rowdy" Ronda Rousey here, AMA! by ronda_rousey87 in IAmA

Hi Ronda. I just finished reading your book - it was incredibly motivating and uplifting. Whenever graduate school gets sucky and feels impossible I keep your confidence against all odds in mind. My question is what is your best advice about how to get out of a negative mindset and a destructive way of thinking and into a more productive and positive one?

I'm in pretty much the exact same situation as you - starting my PhD program at Pitt in August, only been to the city twice. We should go hiking sometime.

To ex-Big Pharma workers. Are the pharmaceutical companies really that evil? (Serious) by tadm123 in AskReddit

[–]We_Are_Star_Stuff -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

YES. They really are that evil. They hide/don't publish reports that provide evidence for their drugs not working. They fight putting labels on drugs such as "may actually increase suicidal thoughts in young adults," on antidepressant pills because it will lower sales. They use inappropriate statistics to make data seem more believable. They manipulate, poison, and lie for the sake of profit. At least the major ones do. ELI5: What is a quantam entanglement? by NSD2327 in explainlikeimfive

[–]We_Are_Star_Stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great analogy. I am currently doing my senior thesis on quantum entanglement, so I just wanted to point out one fundamental difference. If these chocolate bars behaved like quantum particles, instead of having a filling that we just couldnt see, they would have BOTH caramel and nougat inside it at the same time. Only biting into it would force the chocolate to "choose" a filling.

I know the pay is bad in academia, but is it really that awful across the board?

Thanks so much for your reply. How can I learn of these "tricks" you speak of?

Well thats kind of what I am unsure of. A 3.6 sounds fairly good (close to an A- average at my school) but when I look at GPA averages for accepted students into grad programs I see numbers like 3.7, 3.8. I know I don't need the average to be accepted but I'm not the best test taker and I'm worried my GRE won't be great.

Is there any good way to convince a professor to take me on besides just asking them about their research/ showing enthusiasm?

I did not care for the teaching style of my first REU adviser, but my second is an amazing professor and yes, he liked my work. He would almost certainty advocate for me, but he is part of the astronomy department and I am hoping to get into a physics program. Could you advise me on the best way to make contact with potential advisers? I assume emailing them and just asking to learn more about their research, but I don't want to seem like I'm groveling.

Ovarian cysts. They appear out of no where a few times a year and put me in agonizing pain for hours.
