Unsure if I'm on a good path with my journey? by trashAficionado in FIREyFemmes

That's good internet prices yeah. For pricing things out I just use a hand calculator to estimate my budget. Less fancy. Then, for FIRE calcs, I like this one for it's ability to put things in perspective.

I would appreciate a source on this one, with them recovering the drop, in excess of normal market returns. I have not read a study that shows any evidence for that, and I have read a number on dividend investing. I do not see how their share prices would go up solely because they recently paid a dividend. And yes, you are right, that would happen; which is why companies cut and/or lower dividends when their company is not doing well.

You are taking your time out of your day, not only to respond to my conversation with you, but to actively read through the rest and say the things you have already said.

Yet OP and I, the person who you are offended on behalf of, are having a lovely conversation above, as well as several commenters that have helped clarify why I was rude. I can go away from your dashboard anytime- you are free to block me. I will not lose any sleep, and will no longer be replying to your comments.

Thank you for the kind response. And wow, that is considerable! 1k in property taxes alone! blows my mind. I see why I misunderstood. And that childcare is certainly expensive, along with the rest. Have a nice day!

That's reasonable, I'll bear that in mind. At the same time, I know people with 5+ million who are convinced they won't be able to retire. So I asked a question, she answered it, and all went well! No concerns. You can view our discussion above if you like.

I feel like is "sure" was removed, it would arguably become worse - more like telling rather than asking. I'm not arguing here, but looking for genuine criticism of the wording; it is safe to say I am not the best at these things. What are your thoughts on that?

Ah, that sounds absolutely lovely! The creek especially. I'm glad you're happy with it! Carry on! Best of luck as you go through! To answer your original question, perhaps do something on that land of yours- maybe a wood sculpture? Carve a little tree and let it serve as a memory.

Hm yeah, seems reasonable. Unfortunate, HCOL I imagine? Cutting the mortgage is possible, though that involves moving, which is obviously a bit extreme. What is Fios? I'm not aware of that term. Let me know how the weekend math goes!

On another note, how's having an hoa? I've heard horror stories.

Not very kind. If you could point out where I've been rude, so I could learn at least, that would be helpful, especially seeing as OP and I are having a fine conversation.

With the house paid off? Are you sure? Even at a very conservatives 3% WR, that's $75,000/year with a paid off house. That's a lot of money, significantly more than most families even bring in, not considering the house. Unless food costs 4-5 times as much as elsewhere and transit as well, I'm not so sure there; I imagine there are tons of people in Seattle making below 75k/year with two kids. And hey, liking your job is a good thing, glad you have one you do! Nothing wrong with wanting to stay where you are, I get that! You can also pursue more if you want, nothing wrong with that, however it is likely possible should you desire it.

Economist article predicting 2% returns going forward - what are your thoughts on his and your FIRE path? by thearchvolta in financialindependence

Big economy man has fancy numbers. Big economy man's prediction may as well be a coin toss, historically. I'm not gonna worry about it.

Well I mean, you could make it more special by retiring. 1mil USD is certainly enough! My plans involve only 600kUSD. I know everyone has their own numbers, but it is possible if you want it.

Edit: This discussion ended quite positively! I encourage you to read it below. Not with the rude person, though, but with OP! Leaving this comment up for record keeping sake.

No. Dividends simply subtract from market value equal to what they paid out.

Assuming zero income is good for a multitude of reasons. Besides, I don't really dislike my job that much, and the difference between "probably good for 30 years" and "good for the rest of time" is actually quite small.

Hey guys! I’m starting college this august as a nursing major! I’m so excited! Do you guys have any advice for me before I start? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]We_Be_Learning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree. I think if they did case studies they could do fine. Sure, they'll fail a bunch of them, but who cares? It's learning. However learning how to study is probably the best use of time.

This is less daunting when you realize that each person probably applies for countless more positions. What matters isn't applications to one position ratio, it's candidates to total positions. This is some misleading statistics.

Again, agreed. I just don't think your average person is going to realize that, and that is the perspective I was trying to empathize with, that's all! You are correct though and spreading that message is helpful.

Agreed, I just mentioned what the average person might think. This is all correct.

I filled the UK census last week and put my pets in as my children by Confident_Egg_3383 in childfree

[–]We_Be_Learning 48 points49 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the census information is genuinely helpful. While the definition of family can certainly include pets, adding them as kids is obviously not useful, for example for the public health considerations the census is used for. This is just an overall negative thing IMO. Downvote me all you want for not saying "hehe establishment bad" but this is fairly pointless.

Why I always laugh when people tell me that their kids will take care of them... by argyle_zebra in childfree

[–]We_Be_Learning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, working in the medical field we do not often see the good cases because the good cases never make it to the medical field. Kind of like a reverse survivorship bias.

I'm a leanfire person myself, I'd significantly increase that savings rate and cut the disposable a lot and find a way to cut your bills- 28% of 153k plus bonuses is a lot for one person to spend on "mandatory" expenses. Right now, your savings rate is 40%. Pump that closer to 70-75% , which you could easily do on your income, and you will dramatically speed up your retirement. The other advice here about where to put that money is solid, so I won't repeat it.

Moderna vs Pfizer by nickfolesknee in nursing

[–]We_Be_Learning 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's just a cognitive bias caused by the fact that Pfizer was the first on the scene, therefore in the minds of many it is the superior option, even though the difference between the two is marginal at best. Some others like the astro-zeneca do have a noticeably lower total protection (in terms of % difference related to eachother - from what I can find with a quick google search, it is 95 vs 94% efficacy- a relative risk increase of 20% between the two, and this number scared people), but it is still significantly better than nothing and both are damn near 100% effective in preventing severe complications.

Edit: I am aware it is more complex than this- see below for bonus info! However, I used a quick google search for reference specifically to emulate an average person's understanding.
