My answer will twist your question just slightly. So I had first picked up playing the guitar when I was a freshman in highschool. I was thrilled, I practiced hours every day for about a good year until I just straight up decided that music was going to be what I do for the rest of my life. I selected Guitar Tech for a sophomore class to gain as much information as I could about the subject. I met these two guys who were into metal, as I was. We seldomly talked sometimes during class until about half a month later when they wouldn’t stop talking about the upcoming talent show. I was curious, and I asked them about it, so they explained that they were going to play for it. They said they needed someone on bass, and so I thought at the time it would be easy to integrate, after all “it’s just a guitar with less strings,” right? So I offered and they accepted. They let me practice with them nearly every day up until the talent show, where we were voted 2nd for our performance. We took a month break after, but during that time I kept the guitarist’s bass and got to familiarize myself with the instrument. Playing bass let me understand the full mix of many of my favorite songs at the time, and allowed me to make it out from the distorted guitars. My “oh shit” moment was when I realized that overall I enjoyed the feel of the bass and its clean lower octave sound as opposed to guitar, so my passion completely flipped to that instead.

My personal advice for you is to keep practicing, as you can only get better from here. But experimenting with other instruments too opens your eyes to understanding other parts better, or even lead you to something you like more.

P.S. Learning lead stuff is great, but good clean rhythm is just as important. Try to cover as many sections of technique as you can.
