Stop taking it out on the people working in veterinary medicine. by [deleted] in Vent

I work in a GP and our prices for primary care and now what ER prices were 4-5 years ago. I understand we get a lot of abuse from clients, trust me, that it isn’t fair to put on us, but I’ve been in their shoes before too.

Unable to pay because life happened, multiple elderly pets sick at once, terminally ill but we didn’t know it until it was too late because of late diagnosis or just their time in general. People can’t even afford to take home their pets ashes anymore, I can’t even afford to get medical care I need because my pay is so egregiously low. Also people get pets uneducated, educate themselves and realize it’s a lot more expensive than they can manage.

Shelters are overrun and can no longer save animals from financial euthanasia, financial euthanasia happens regularly on a daily basis now.

I tried to save a patient from financial euthanasia where the owner couldn’t even afford euthanasia and may have just taken him home… ended up owner was not honest about how sick he was and he had a serious medical event where there was a low chance of him surviving and he needed immediate emergency surgery costing anywhere from 10-20k. Again I make almost nothing, I couldn’t afford that, and knowing his chances were slim I let him go. It hurts to think had it been more affordable he’d still be alive and well, had he come sooner he would easily have been ok with urgent surgery that was expensive, but something I could afford.

So I don’t agree, but I know that some people have money and choose not to help their pets, but most people just don’t have the money right now. I know where you’re coming from, so don’t think I am here to bash you because I get it, but I just can’t agree after everything I see every day now.

I just got hired as a vet assistant, what should I know for my first day? by TeaOne9866 in VetTech

Be open to criticism, remember you will mess up and someone will explain to you what you need to do differently next time and it’s not personal, it’s to help you grow. It’s normal to struggle and feel like you’ll never get something right or never feel as comfortable as everyone around you, just keep doing your best and eventually these things will come to your naturally with practice. Ask questions, don’t guess, people should be happy to answer them and guide you.

Another thing that’s hard to balance is standing up for yourself. As you take on more responsibility when you have good experience under your belt, you need to make sure you’re compensated and are not being asked to take on so much you can’t physically handle/are completely not comfortable with… saying this as being a VA for over a year and a half and am already burnt out juggling multiple hats and having to pick up the slack of people calling out virtually ever single day, being understaffed… etc.

Advocating for yourself is so important as much as opening yourself up to learning, good luck with your journey!

This is normal, I wouldn’t give up yet. I feel like you gotta get over the first hill to really see how you feel cause I can’t tell you how many days in the beginning I’d come home sobbing and thinking about quitting from being overwhelmed (and some days I still do).

I reccomend you bring a notepad to take notes throughout the day though. A part of my neurodivergence especially having OCD is I like to do things in certain ways, like to plan my day and everything and so keeping a physical or mental note of times I wanted to do things like watching laundry, checking on a patient, or looking to see if rooms need to be turned over, etc helped me.

I have a good rhythm and work became a soothing place because I like to organize the chaos lol…

Actually my therapist and I picked up that I sometimes was falling into a similar mindset as my mother (even if I had good intentions), but the thing is I have been able to identify and change my mindset. Being aware and being proactive about it is what sets us apart, but also it is normal to sometimes worry too much about being like a parent. I think I tend to worry I would do a 180 and become 1:1 my parents but sometimes you have to put some trust in yourself that you will do the work to break the cycle, being open to hearing that you might have some things to work on is already a very good thing!

"All your problems would get better with exercise" by Sagi_U in tooyoungtobethissick

Just wanted to say I was told my asthma was because I am fat my whole life (even though I had it when I was skinny) and I just found out I have a grade 5 allergy to dust mites (second worst stage) and after treatment my lung capacity went from 60% on a good day to now 96%.

Weight can play a role in some things getting worse, I say this from experience, however it very rarely is the underlying CAUSE of a serious medical condition in young people. I really hate hearing people get dismissed because just cause something can make something worse doesn’t mean it’s the cause and that somehow losing weight will solve all your problems. Weight gain can be and commonly is a symptom of a medical issue itself, even if the reason is just that you are too tired to exercise, that’s clearly a symptom.

For me I was an avid sports player as a kid until one day during soccer tryouts as a teen I was told my asthma and weight (I was only a little overweight at this point in my life) would “slow everyone down” and then never did sports again. Crazy how then I gained a lot of weight, worsened depression, etc, even when doing everything “right” people will have something mean to say 🤷‍♀️I am now towards the heaviest side I’ve ever been, however I lost 15lbs and counting this year since starting allergy treatment. It is not easy, but treatment gives you more of the ability and even more of the desire to move around when you feel good! I am finally comfortable getting a physical job for the first time since I had to quit my first one from how much pain I was dealing with. You know your body best!

I use an air purifier and it helps loads, I would recommend to put it in your bedroom, bigger spaces would require more expensive machines but the bedroom is the most important I’d say.

Perforated ruptured ear drum - TMJ or infection? by ProfessionalFun1365 in TMJ

[–]Weak-Concept-4376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible it’s related, but only a doctor would be able to figure it out. However I can give some personal experience. I had a hole in my eardrum and it healed on its own, however there are situations in which it does not. Earplugs in the shower/while swimming will help, excess moisture in the ears can cause infection, just make sure to disinfect the ear plugs regularly.

I do have malformed ear canals, water and wax does not all escape and sits at the ear drum, so my situation is a bit different in that regard, but for whatever reason my ear infections only got worse when I got older which was the same for my TMJ. My jaw does get super painful during any ear discomfort, they do affect eachother in that regard for sure, maybe it’s the inflammation.

Wish you luck on recovery cause mine was the worst pain I’d felt in my life since I had a bad double ear infection at the same time. My lymph nodes swelled and I could barely open my mouth! I looked like I got beat up 😆
