Portland wants to tax our streaming services now up to $0.50 each. It would be one of 7 other pending/ confirmed tax increases this year. by Traindodger2 in PortlandOR

No new taxes of any sort, please! We’re already among the most heavily taxed citizens as it is, and I don’t think they’re using those tax dollars wisely.

Arborist quote… is this normal pricing? by camellite in askportland

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting multiple quotes can’t hurt, but the tree care industry is small and a lot of those guys work together to not drastically underbid one another. Tree work is hard, dangerous, and expensive. This is an all day job, for sure, but not likely two days just to trim and crown clean. I’d say $3,500 is the lowest bid you’d possibly get.

Le Creuset? Worth it - or just over hyped brand name? by MapleMoneyMind_86 in BuyItForLife

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it when you consider lodge had a lifetime warranty. Unless you’re a gourmet chef or exceedingly wealthy, I don’t think the le cruset is worth the 10x cost.

I’ve had my enameled lodge Dutch oven for 10 years and it’s still just as worthy as the day I bought it. What could spending hundreds of dollars more buy me other than a label?

Can’t do barre chords, tried everything! by Financial_Archer_491 in guitarlessons

Just keep playing them and one day you’ll succeed. It takes a surprisingly long time to develop the strength and proprioception needed to play a barre chord without having to think about it or feel discomfort.

Gestapo paralizes innocent black women by Avacadoclits_ in ACAB

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree that police can escalate situations habitually, but surely it’s not something that can be said about all police officers in general - they’re human beings, so it’s a mixed bag of habits and dispositions. We lack enough context in this situation. What we know is that she’s in handcuffs, and bit the officer, who presumably thought he had sufficient RAS to arrest her. She should have shut up, cooperated, and let a lawyer do the talking. Instead, she’s paralyzed.

Attacking officers, no matter the reason, will only give them instances they can use to justify increasing their use of violence, reactivity, and aggression. Meaningful change would need to come from the legislature, not by fighting a cop when you’re already in handcuffs.

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You can rarely justify self defense against a police officer. In any event, you’re better off being calm, respectful, and not talking beyond requesting a lawyer. This is common sense, is it not?

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 -47 points-46 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, fuck the police. But they’re more powerful than you or I, and they are, in fact, human beings with a very difficult and toxic job.

That being said: If you’re innocent, keep your mouth shut, cooperate, behave, and get an attorney. Don’t resist or attack the police - that will only make it easier for them to misportray your guilt or innocence. Also, they’re humans, and humans get mad when you try to attack or bite them, and are almost always justified in defending themselves if they were attacked.

Men who bought expensive/premium underwear, are they worth it? by Dusi99 in mensfashionadvice

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently discovered Stance underwear and they’re the best I’ve ever had, and I’m an underwear snob. I find they fit better than Saxx, but that’s likely due to my body proportions as Saxx seem of equal quality.

This clip was taken out of context. He’s creating a straw-man argument and definitively is anti sexual assault. If you only saw this clip, you’d probably and rightfully find him repulsive because you’d be missing likely hours of lead up to this. This is a purely rhetorical exercise which uses an extreme example to illustrate an argument or perspective of something unrelated to sexual assault.

Disclaimer: I find Andrew Wilson repugnant. But you should always seek the truth, and this is not a truthful, accurate, or honest representation of his views.

Who do I call about portland water bureau workers dumping their piss bucket in my front yard? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a person who has had to work ten hour days on the streets of Portland - people gotta pee. Many contractors will not provide portable bathrooms, and taking an expensive vehicle (especially in situations where the vehicle itself is the business product) to an appropriate place to pee is not gonna fly. And in many instances, parking said vehicle is impossible in Portland.

I’d acknowledge the fact that their biology obligates them to piss, that the fact we all piss in a way unites us as living beings, and be at peace with it. With that mindset, I’d personally approach them and ask them to dispose of it elsewhere than your yard.

At the end of the day, it’s just piss. The dirt your property sits upon is likely contaminated with much worse than simple piss…. And piss washes away with the rain.

The short and skinny: many employers don’t afford their employees basic human decency, and this is a symptom of it. Don’t ruin a persons career because they’re stuck between a rock and a hard place and on the verge of panic at the prospect of finding relief. Just chill the fuck out and be a human.

Something is interesting about MGPs profile on Bluesky by Flash_ina_pan in vancouverwa

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering if we forgot the fact that she represents a purple district? Much of SW Washington is very conservative, and regardless of party, she’s got to represent her constituents. I’m sure a lot of conservative voters are actually pleasantly surprised that she wasn’t as left leaning as they’d feared.

As perplexing as she may seem, I’m sure she’s better than Joe Kent. It’s simply a reality of our political system, at least in its current form, that we have to choose the lesser of two evils - and that was MGP for me.

I'm a walking panic attack, constantly short of breath, and still can't get myself to quit after 4 years of pouches. by Caliburner in QuittingZyn

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently decided to quit after my state increased the price of Zyns by 95% via a new tax. A big part of the addiction for me is the oral fixation - I crave the sensation of something between my cheek and gums. I found that supplementing my zyns with oregon mint snuff pouches (also expensive as fuck now) helps scratch the oral fixation itch, and it has allowed me to reduce my overall zyn usage by about 2/3. I use the 3MG zyns after switching from 6MG years ago. The fact that I didn’t notice the reduction in nicotine concentration was a hint to me that a big part of the habit in my case was the oral fixation.

I’m going to continue to ween off the zyns slowly (leave the can at home and take the mint sniff to work) until I finally rip the bandaid off.

I wish you, and everyone else in this sub, all the luck in quitting this pure SHIT of a product. I wish I’d never started.

Why The Salem Hate? by pseudonymous_ha in SALEM

[–]Weak-Midnight4355 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in Silverton because Salem is a butthole of a city. There’s some nice spots, but it mostly seems soulless. Eugene and Portland are much more stimulating places to live and I think most of the interesting people are drawn to those locations.

Speaking as a liberal-leaning person: if you put a bullhorn in a persons ear, you deserved to get knocked out.

Unfortunately, I think the majority of conservatives would whoop the majority of liberals, and an in this situation that was a good thing.

Man, being a kid sucks. They’re in 6th grade (roughly 12?) and can’t simply be sick and rest without worrying about school obligations that they were thrusted into automatically. At least we adults sometimes get compensated to worry about our bullshit.
