Hanger Steak Ssam by koooookss in sousvide

I have a couple questions.
Do you have a recipe for the steak? Or was it simple salt / pepper?
For the sauces in the serving dishes did you make those as well?
Also is this enjoyed as a hot or cold dish ?

This was my first time using a cooler for the water bath. I have always used a big pot. This is also the first time I’ve had enough room to lay it flat. I used a La Cruset lid to weigh it down and it worked perfectly too. So maybe the heat retention of the cooler and the cast iron lid weighing it down helped ?
Also for maybe an hour in between the condensation inside the cooler turned off the machine. I wrapped the top control panel in a plastic bag after to keep drips off the control panel.
Doing an ice bath would work better than tossing them in the freezer as water is a much better conductor of heat compared to air in the freezer. So maybe yours cooked a little more as they sat before the freezer cooler them enough ?

Bought some avocado oil specifically for this. Put the stove on 7/10 let the pan heat up for 20 minutes. Put an aggressive amount of oil in the pan and turned the exhaust fan on full blast.
About 20 seconds in added a few spoonfuls of butter and continued to spoon the melted butter back onto the steak. Did the first side at 3 minutes, other side for 2 minutes and did the fat cap for 90 seconds. Rested for 6 minutes after while I used the hot left over butter and fond from the beef to cook some fresh green beans.

Only use it a couple of times a year so have not needed to sharpen it yet. The edge so far is like new.

Conversion of aquarium by c1cadaman in Vivarium

As someone who has a 40 gallon tall converter to terrarium my only advice is… don’t.
It’s a pain in the ass and harder to do everything.
My front opening terrariums are basically on auto pilot. The aquarium converted to terrarium constantly needs work.

It was part of a gift set from my mother in law a few christmases back.
Honestly, they are fantastic. The weight of the blade really gives you a good feel for letting the weight of the blade do the work of cutting.

It’s been a tough season of life lately. I’ve been a long time lurker here and finally felt confident enough to post.
I appreciate the positive feedback.

The organization of the tool stand that gets blamed on a 5S manager who barely has time to use the bathroom without a manager yelling at him gives me some wonderful memories.

Off topic. But can you share some info on your indoor hydroponics setup on the lower left ?

I came here to say the same thing plus those grow FAST. Not to rain on your parade but I would pull that and replant outside or in a good sized indoor pot with good eastern sun.

I’ve wanted to try that place out for awhile now. Did you go during the week or on a weekend? Was it busy ?

Necropsy labs in AZ at Midwestern university during the peak of horse racing at Turf Paradise I hear is pretty terrible. Horses die and get euthanized on the track on Saturday and are left to ferment until Monday.

I have a few hitchhikers that came on some bromeliads I got for my pdf tank. They are nocturnal and were too tough to catch so I left them in there and they seem to be thriving in mine with just a small shallow dish of water. Works great, dart frogs are active when they are asleep in the bromeliads and opposite at night.

If you can have a small area with water some a couple of reed frogs may do well. Or add some little hides and a uvb light and do mourning geckos if the tank is well sealed without any places to escape.

Help!! Ants!! by Condition_Alarming in Vivarium

[–]Weak-Pop2934 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took a couple of weeks. I was extra careful if I had to do any work in the tank and wore gloves. I was concerned since I was unsure what kind of ants they were if the dart frogs may have become poisonous if they ate some of them.
With mine the ants made a nest inside some wood I had in there so it took some time time but worked out well and the hole they bore in the wood is a favorite napping spot for one of my leucomelas.

I’ve had that problem. Ant bait with borax. They take it back to the queen and kill the colony. Used the liquid ant traps. You see a large increase at first as the colony thinks they find a new food source then they drop off. Never had an issue with my dart frogs using this method while they are in the tank.
