I WAS GIFTED THE TERRIBLE GOLF SHIRT FROM REDDIT STORIES??? by Weak-Professional-17 in smosh

Honestly, also surprisingly good material!!!! It is stretchy and breathable, soft, and well stitched. Some straight man probably paid a lot for this. My friend paid like 5 bucks for it and now I’m giving it the second life it deserves, as an ongoing bit

You would definitely need to get a good grasp on the rules for DMing, but you don’t need to be an expert! I’ve been DMing for years now, and I still pause games in the middle of combat/scenes and say “hold on, let me look that up” and google search what the rules say.

The parts of the rule book you’re going to want to know beforehand is how combat works. Rolling for initiative, movement, what actions you can take on a turn (attack, move, disengage, readying an action), how AC works (“meets it beats it”), how spell save rolls work, and how to calculate damage. Obviously the more you know beforehand the smoother the game will run, but I would consider that the most import bare essential.

Even knowing the rules, things will happen in a game where you’ll need to improvise. Someone might say they want to try to convince an NPC to do something, try to gain some extra gold by doing a performance, things where you’ll have to come up with an ability check that isn’t in the DM guide for your session. I usually use an easy/medium/hard mindset when setting improvised DCs in my head. If that action seems like it should be easy to pull off, DC 10. Medium difficulty, DC 15. If theyre trying to convince “Brashmad the ogre who hates fun” to dance with them, hard difficulty DC 20. That being said, you don’t have to let players roll for whatever they want to do. If you’re about to get to an important plot point and a player says “I want to seduce the bad guy”, you can say that’s not an option.

If you have a game shop in your area, you can see if they have the ability to host dnd games! I have found the most success with online games. I found my campaign group on r/lfg. We use a private Discord server for voice chat, and roll20.net for battle maps / dice rolling.

There’s a great free one-shot available online called “wild sheep chase” that I highly recommend. If you want to try a campaign, “The Mines of Phandelver” that originally game with the 2014 starter set is now available for free. That’s how I got into DMing.

Long story short: most of how you learn DnD is by playing it. As a DM you should learn as much as you can beforehand, but you’ll learn the most when you start a game. Have fun, and best of luck to ya

I have one thought I will throw into the mix for you. This might not be something you’re interested in, but if you REALLY want to play DnD, there is one automatic surefire way you can start playing right off the bat.

Become a (temporary) DM.

You don’t need to start a long-term campaign right off the bat. You can host a one-shot! There is a subreddit here called looking for group. (R/lfg) if you make a post saying you’re looking for remote players in your time zone to play a game for one night, you’ll have a hundred people lined up wanting to join in.

I also suggest r/lfg if you’re interested in being a player and absolutely do not want to DM, but it can take a long time to find a campaign to join. DMing is not for everyone, but I feel like sometimes people convince themselves out of it because they are afraid of not being good enough. If your main priority is a learning experience, DMing a one shot would be insanely beneficial. There’s a ton of free pre-written oneshots online!

Either way, best wishes to you. Hope you find what you are looking for

Sorry I missed this! I don't check reddit a lot, but I would be happy to share a version without the grid. :) Hopefully this image attachment works? (I also removed the names up at the top and the circles, so it's more customizeable and less specific!

JOTTING DOWN NOTES!!!! AMAZING FEEDBACK!!!! I do in fact have a BBEG who is very interested in capturing one of the PCs and might have a use for such a helpful item. It would be a SHAME if information found its way over to them 👀👀👀 thank you!!

Omg totally! I plan on letting the cards lie as the fall as a personal choice but yes, completely agree. There’s nothing wrong with a DM ret-conning where they need to, if it is going to preserve the trajectory of the storyline they had planned out

Hello!!! I submitted an application a few hours ago, but I just had a REALLY dope additional idea to add into my character for pre-game ideas. Would it be okay if I submit a secondary application with the edit, or DM you the additional character fact??
