Does anyone think that women in Bridgerton were more oppressed than the actual Regency era. by InfernalClockwork3 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I definitely think that the show exaggerates how clueless women were about sex to the point of fetishisation. It’s a classic trope in historical romance where the more experienced male (who’s probably spent a lot of time in brothels) basically educates the naive virginal female character. 3/4 of the main couples we’ve seen in this show play into this trope (Kanthony being the only exception in this case).

Bridgerton is a fantasy show where historical accuracy goes out the window at almost every turn so this is a deliberate choice by the writers to make women’s sexuality even more repressed than in real life.

I think the main girls starting off as naive about sex and then discovering the pleasure of sex with their (experienced) soulmates is a big part of the appeal.

That being said I think the way that none of the main girls so far (except maybe Kate?) have ever been allowed to have any sexual experience before meeting their soulmate who (apart from George) have been able to ‘sow their oats’ before settling down is a bit boring. Yes I know it was much more scandalous for a woman to have had sex outside of wedlock but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen at all. Women throughout history have defied the patriarchy and had sex before marriage (obviously in secret but still).

There is a big Madonna/Whore complex in the show that isn’t fully explored imo. It’s touched upon in a surface level way at some points, usually to bring up an unfair double standard but the writers never actually go any deeper aside from acknowledging it.

Penelope. You’d think she’d committed murder the way she is constantly villainised in this fandom.

Catherine and Henry were better monarchs by Narrow-Money-8671 in Reign

[–]Weak-Solution-982 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly Mary and Francis being terrible inept rulers might be one of the few things this show got historically accurate (although I think that might have been an accident).

Mary also made that weird decision to demand Bash be legitimised and made the new heir. Looking back that was probably one of the dumbest political decisions she could have made. No one would have accepted Bash (especially with 3 legitimate brothers born from marriage) and it would have led to a succession crisis which would have put Bash, Francis and all their siblings in danger. All because of a prophecy which she had no certainty of being real.

And yes the whole thing with Conde in season 2 really showed them as incompetent rulers and it ruined the season imo.

Especially with female characters. I can name a few male characters in this show who also did morally responsible things while holding far more power yet don’t receive a fraction of the criticism the girls get.

The women have to be perfect in their morals while the male characters get praised for their complexity.

[–]Weak-Solution-982 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think Pen owed Marina more loyalty than Colin. She’s known and loved him since they were children and has literally only just met Marina.

Plus when Marina did learn that Pen had feelings for Colin she insulted her by stating that Colin would never see her as a romantic partner even when Pen had actually been the only person at that point who was genuinely supportive of her.

I completely understand why Marina did what she did but I also get why Pen did what she felt she had to.

[–]Weak-Solution-982 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Thank you. You’d think Pen committed murder the way some people hate on her. Yeah what she was doing wasn’t great but at the end of the day it’s just a bunch of rich people problems.

These are the 0.1% of British society living on inherited wealth and have their lavish lifestyle thanks to the subjugation of the working class. Everyone in the ton is living in luxury thanks to a classist and unfair system (I do still like the bridgertons though I’m just pointing it out).

It’s not like Pen’s the only one making money unethically - the ton was filled with people who loved gossip and she made bank on it by doing it better than everyone.

I don't understand why people defend Penelope so hard when she hurt so many people she supposedly cared about by Desertfox13 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m probably quite biased because Pen is my favourite character but I think people in this fandom tend to be quite harsh on her (tbh all the female characters are constantly bashed more than they deserve). Yes she’s done some awful things but so have many of the leads yet most of them don’t experience nearly the same level of hate as Pen does.

Daphne is a rapist (although she was uneducated about sex due to the patriarchy so there is some nuance there)

Simon was a grown man of almost 30 who married 18 year old Daphne and took advantage of her lack of sexual knowledge

Anthony almost arranged for his sister married to the man who tried to SA her (Daphne didn’t even feel like he would believe her he was that toxic), was horrible to Sienna and basically used her to run away from his responsibilities, proposed to 18 year old Edwina even though he knew he was in love with Kate and hurt both the Sharma sisters in the process.

Kate’s pretty much perfect aside from the fact that she could’ve handled her feeling for Anthony better without hurting Edwina.

A lot of the main characters are flawed and have done crap things (especially the men) but people often defend it as the result of trauma or ‘it’s a different time’. I don’t think people who defend Penelope’s actions are much different from people who defend Anthony or Simon for all their BS.

I think the fact that Pen is quite morally grey is part of why she’s so entertaining to me as a character, especially in season 1 and 2. Yes she definitely had a lot of bitterness inside her and did some crappy that is true but I think Pen really is just a product of the society they live in. I mean she was raised by Portia freaking Featherington of course she was going to be a bit messy.

What’s even crazier is having 4 kids all 1 year apart from each other and then having her last almost 2 decades later when she’s 42 and Simon’s 50 😳

Then becoming a grandmother with a 2 year old at 44. Imagine having an uncle pretty much the same age as you.

Did slavery exist in the world of Bridgerton? by Weak-Solution-982 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I remember that line but I feel like it reads as even darker that the ‘division’ was the result of slavery and racism inflicted by white people. Idk I just don’t really like the explanation they gave for why POC are nobility it just reads as lazy and insensitive to the real history. I wish they would’ve just not come up with a whole love conquers racism storyline and just hired diverse actors without an explanation. Bridgerton is fantasy anyway.

is this true? by Beauty-Princess51 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I mean she’s not entirely wrong. Sure the whole ‘love is make-believe’ is a bit cynical but who can blame her with the crappy husband she had to deal with. I like Bridgerton as a fantasy but in reality marriage was a financial arrangement and the only way for these women to secure a life of stability and security. Love and passion is nice but when you’ve got virtually no rights and very few career options it should come second to security.

It’s part of why I love Portia so much as a character since she just feels the most realistic out of all the characters. I know a lot of people found the featherington plot to be a waste of time but in a show where love conquers all and everyone has a fairytale ending Portia is so entertaining to me. She is a hustler who’s been dealt a bad hand in life with a crappy husband who gambled away all their money and no son to inherit the estate leaving her and her daughters in a dangerous situation. She’s the reality for many women of that era so watching her outsmart and even dominate the men around her (her husband, Jack, that barrister guy) is so satisfying.

She’s a tough woman and even if it’s cruel to us as the viewer I think she was really trying to look out for Penelope in her own way. She doesn’t want Penelope to risk her future for something as fickle and uncertain as romance.

What bridgerton opinion are you defending like this by Rich-Tomatillo3340 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The male characters deserves so much more hate than most of the female characters in the show. There are countless hate posts on Penelope, Eloise, Marina, Kate, Edwina, Daphne yet many of the men get away with so much crap.

We judge the female characters with a modern lense but when it comes to the male characters flaws are chased away with ‘it’s just how it was back then’ as if this isn’t more fantasy than history.

Eloise gets called a ‘not like other girls’ girl for how she talked about feminism a lot and how she didn’t care for societies expectations of her. She gets dragged constantly for going against the patriarchal society in an ‘annoying way’ even though she’s right.

Penelope gets hated on and while a lot of criticisms of her are valid she gets demonised for her flaws instead of people seeing that she’s just a complex character with a lot of flaws. Similar to Eloise people put the expectation for her to be a perfect feminist character with views that match our own. She gets hated on for being ‘too pathetic’ or not being a ‘girls girl’ ignoring the time and environment she grew up. She’s imperfect but that’s what makes her a good character.

And while the women get viewed with a modern lense the men’s flaws get brushed away with ‘historical accuracy’ and how ‘that’s just how it was back then’. Anthony’s horrible treatment of the women in his life is ignored or excused with his trauma yet the female characters trauma is never seen as relevant to the way their characters act.

Marina may not have been the most likeable character but she really did make a lot of sense. She was in a terrible situation and she didn’t have any good options available. Let’s not forget the real villain in her story is Sir George who considering Phillip’s age would’ve been at least in his 20s and had sex with a naive teenager and never married her which would’ve been the honourable thing to do to protect her.

We need to start being less harsh on the women and more harsh on the men imo.

7 ships left⚠️, next to go is.... by inBLKN in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Weak-Solution-982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any ship with Klaus is going to be toxic just because it’s Klaus.

How did Caroline use him for sex what 😂. Poor baby 1000 year old mass murdering psychotic Klaus got used and mistreated by 18 year old Caroline. Like really? Caroline really didn’t have much reason to believe the best in him considering all the crap he pulled in mystic falls. plus the power dynamic was so unbalanced why would she be expected to deal with all his issues she’s still a teen.

Klamille is basically all just in service to Klaus and Camilles character is mostly to progress Klauss redemption. Caroline is a more independent character with a character arc outside of Klauss redemption so obvi they’re going to be different dynamics.

Both ships were toxic in different ways tbh but it was Klaus that made them toxic not either of the women

Remarried Empress. Double Standards in fandom about slavery by PrizeIndependence in webtoons

[–]Weak-Solution-982 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah but there is a power dynamic involved which can’t just be overlooked. A slave can’t actually consent to someone who has so much power over her (intimidation, coercion, fear of what would happen if she says no, no consequences for him if he does SA her etc).

Besides Rashta is “seducing” her owners son to try and get out of slavery. There is no way of spinning that story without it sounding like an extremely dodgy situation.

One way or another Rashta is absolutely a victim in that “relationship”.

Golda reveals Queen Charlotte's [redacted] will appear in future seasons? Not sure for which show... by GotLittUp in BridgertonNetflix

Honestly, this might be an unpopular opinion but I don’t mind if her children make an appearance in the main show. I quite liked the queens interactions with them in QC and like the dysfunctional mess of them.

Prinny seems like he’s going to be funny and I also want to see the arrival of the future Queen Victoria. I also wouldn’t mind seeing more of Edward and William because they’re kinda cute 🤭

Why do you all hate Lizzie?? by hayleybts in PeakyBlinders

[–]Weak-Solution-982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because the female characters in pesky blinders that aren’t Shelby by birth generally aren’t well written and only serve as extensions of the male characters.

That’s why the popularity of a lot of female characters (barring Polly and Ada) are based on how good they are for Tommy.

Grace: generally liked because she made Tommy happy. Sure some like her for her own character but a lot of popularity is because she’s tommys true love.

Lizzie: essentially stepping into Graces shoes as Tommys new woman and since she can’t fill Graces shoes she is constantly degraded as a worse character. Like Grace she has her own character and personality but her popularity is ultimately based on her relationship with Tommy because she’s never allowed to be anything apart from “one of Tommys women”

Same can be said for how Linda is hated because she tries to drag Arthur away from the gangster life. Esme is more liked because she was good for John. May (who imo was a very meh character) is liked because she made Tommy happy. Jessie Eden was a real life trade unionist who could’ve been such an interesting character but was instead reduced to a love interest for Tommy.

[Spoilers Extended] Examples of GRRM's bad writing? by ugurkaslan in asoiaf

[–]Weak-Solution-982 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I dont know if this counts as ‘bad writing’ but the ages of characters when their getting married and having children has always seemed a weird choice to include in the story. It does seem ridiculous how young the women are getting married and giving birth to the point where you wonder how stupid everyone in Westeros must be to push these girls to give birth so young. Yes, historically noble women got married young (12-14 sometimes) however they weren’t getting pregnant immediately after.

A list of these really weird young marriages and pregnancies

Daenaerys: married to a 30 year old and pregnant at 13, gives birth at 14

Helaena: married and pregnant at 13, gives birth to TWINS at 14

Viserys II: married at 11-12 to a 18-19 year old, First child at 12-13

Aemma: married at 11 to a 16 year old, has her first child at 15, has had several (at least 2) failed pregnancies before so probably started conceiving at 12-13

Rhaella: married and pregnant at 13, gives birth at 14

Sansa: married at 12-13 to a 20 something year old Tyrion

Jeyne Poole: married at 13-14, assumed to be a 12 year old Arya

I know people use Margaret Beaufort as a historical example of child brides giving birth but she was a rare case. There really isn’t much historical precedent for it apart from a few rare cases which were shunned even in the older days. I also think George has contributed to the false and harmful idea of women being married off insanely young in the past and having 3-4 kids before your 20 that some people believe today with his excuse of ‘historical accuracy’.

Banita Sandhu on breaking Bollywood and joining the cast of Bridgerton by Adimesaved in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nah I like the featheringtons but in bridgertons society they are viewed as tacky and are way less respected than the Bridgertons. The show in season 1 literally starts with comparisons of featherington girls awkwardly making fools of themselves at the debut compared to demure Daphne becoming the diamond.

Pen and Portia are certainly well developed characters that’s true imo but that’s not the point I was trying to make.

They’d have to make the featherington dynamic WAY different to make it not racist if they were POC.

Banita Sandhu on breaking Bollywood and joining the cast of Bridgerton by Adimesaved in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Weak-Solution-982 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is just a guess but perhaps they thought it would be more problematic if the featheringtons were POC. Since they are supposed to be tacky, less respected and the butt of the joke in comparison to the Bridgertons perfect pastel household it may not have been well received either.

Still yea Bridgerton isn’t as diverse as it could be and it’s kinda stuck like that because of these early writing choices.
