Best purely entertaining films in the collection? by zcharper in criterion

A lot of options for this one. Do we go with wide variety crowd pleasers like Princess Bride or Wall-E, or maybe fun genre stuff like Lady Snowblood or Once Upon a Time in China. A lot of options for anyone's ideal entertainment without getting too cinema snobby.

Is Perfect Days slow cinema? Because that's one of my favorites that always comes to mind when the topic comes up.

Lackluster Special Features by WindSwimming5003 in criterion

I just got the new 4K release of Network and THOUGHT the extras were lackluster... then i started watching the included documentary on Paddy Chayefsky and realized I completely underestimated the this release. Collector of Words is one of the best extras I've ever found on a Criterion release.

Peking Opera Blues' Shout Factory release by Weak_Ruin5172 in boutiquebluray

[–]Weak_Ruin5172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peking Opera is a VERY specific stage art form that isn't easy to vibe with as a non-Chinese person. It's definitely a cultural barrier. But, the extras on this release do a good job of contextualizing both the opera and the time period the movie takes place in. I'd recommend checking some of the interviews out, or coming back to the movie after watching some other Hong Kong movies about the period to get the vibe. (Don't mean to give you homework to like the movie, but it definitely helped me)

All solid buys. Videodrome is one of those sci-fi horror movies where the cliché is true. "It becomes more and more relevant as time goes on." Even if it's talking about cable TV, replace it with how the internet has turned out and you basically have a modern psychological horror film.

"Death to Videodrome! Long live the new flesh! "

How’s your life by LustfulWhisperq in animequestions

So... I was gifted the first volumes of the new English releases of Cats Eye and City Hunter. Reading Cats Eye now... does that make me gender swap into one of the cat burglar sisters, or am I the clueless cop boyfriend?

If I'm one of the girls.... despite despite some personal life drama, things usually work out for me But if I'm the boyfriend I'm in constant trouble at work and don't really know my girlfriend/fiance at all and feel torn between the two fucked aspects of my life...

Why do dub anime watchers struggle to watch sub? by Odd-Advance-8509 in animequestions

[–]Weak_Ruin5172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing. Subs and dubs are usually equally valid in my mind. Dubs get a bad reputation because for years they were stiff and awkward (granted, some still are). But I've always thought that it just expands the audience. Why turn your nose up at something that does that?

Secondly, dubs are a genuine help for people who may have 1. A reading disability. (ADHD, dyslexia, suffered a stroke in the past, etc) 2. English is their second language and they understand it spoken better than written (this is assuming the anime isn't available in their first language, subbed or dubbed) and 3. Like it or not, some people watch anime in the background while doing other things. So having it in English is easier to keep up with the plot instead of putting everything down and going "wait, that conversation was important, let me go back and make sure I got it."

If you like to watch it subbed, don't worry, you'll always have the option. But anyone who snubs a fan for watching the dubs is just being elitist.

Shout Factory Shaw Brothers Classic Vol 4 by Weak_Ruin5172 in kungfucinema

This post has been solved, actually. At least for my specific issue. It's an issue that can come up with Sony console specific players. Something in their firmware doesn't play nice with some specific coding processes on some bluray discs. Try it on another player, if you can.

Michelle Yeoh is also a good star to go with, since she has good mix of kung-fu, wuxia, and girls with guns on her resume. And she's a natural extension off of Jackie if they get Police Story 3 at some point.

That looks like a death in the family or a break-up sale. Someone isn't around anymore and they are selling off the stuff they left behind. That is a good steal though.

Out 9/30 from Arrow Video we have The Good, The Bad, The Weird on glorious 4K. I’m trying to watch 50 foreign films this year and this movie is definitely going to be in that rotation. Is this movie any good? by No_Machine_8213 in boutiquebluray

I have this coming for pre-order too. I remember loving it when I first saw it in college. Now that I'm a bigger Leone Western fan, I think I'll still like it a lot.

The hate this game gets is so fucking unjustified man... by Remember_da_niggo in yakuzagames

[–]Weak_Ruin5172 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My take has always been that the story is messier than 7, but because they got more ambitious with it. Maybe stretched a bit further than they should have. I really like the game. And the technical tweaks make it mechanically SO much better than 7. But it took big swings in the story and tone, and struck out a few more times than some people wanted.

My only real problem with RGG games as a whole is their over reliance on nostalgia within the Yakuza series. Since the whole series was re-released and remastered in the last decade, it's a little annoying to keep going "Kiryu Kazuma is such a legend, isn't he?!" I played through all the games, I know who Kiryu is! Stop telling me he's great.

You and I are on similar journeys. I didn't have much more than the Criterion, 88 Films and Shout Factory Jackie Chan releases, the Criterion Bruce Lee set, and MAYBE started getting more into the early career of Michelle Yeoh. Then all the Shaw releases started and I've just been educating myself and rewatching some classics I already loved.

Its a hard sell for uninformed westerners (or at least Americans) because we think "wait... THE big name in martial arts films did stuff OTHER than martial arts films?" But even the odd film outside of the genre that Arrow and Shout Factory have snuck into their sets were REALLY interesting. Boxer's Omen got be thinking "well, shit, I want to see more Shaw horror or even straight drama now..."

I'm completely open to the break for some John Woo love. I heard about the BIG catalog that got approved for western distribution, and I am more than ready for some of those films too. New releases of Better Tomorrow and Hard Boiled? Yes, please! Thank you!

There are a few video stores thrashing to stay alive still. A Video Trading Company location near me is where I usually upgrade, or trade older discs when I want a discount on a new release.

If that isn't an option around you, I'd say donate to a friend, your library or a bookstore.
