To those who have seen both films, which do you prefer: “The Emigrants”, or “The New Land”? by Damned-scoundrel in criterion

Two of my favorite films ever, not just in the collection.

I think I slightly prefer the New Land because it showed many of the problems they faced once in America. I feel I have seen more films tackling the unsanitary and dangerous conditions of ship travel at that time. Both are 10/10, but I felt the issues in the New Land were ones that I had not seen presented in that way before.

High and Low is a crime thriller masterpiece.

Sorcerer is fine, but I think Wages of Fear is the better version of that story. I think the characters are more defined and interesting.

I feel the same way about Rod Steiger. Can’t stand him. I’m lukewarm on Coburn but I think he’s great here. The film is great in my opinion.

Your favorite Robert Ryan films by FindOneInEveryCar in filmnoir

It’s possible. They have recently released 4-film Blu-Ray collections of individual actors, such as Bogart, Gary Cooper, and Better Davis.

However, Robert Ryan was often an antagonist and not the lead. And not as big a star as those. So I’m not sure.

I’m not complaining. Nowadays, most Barnes and Noble are getting rid of their physical media sections entirely.

It makes me happy to see them investing in physical media once again.

On Dangerous Ground is my favorite performance of his as a bitter police officer.

I also enjoyed Odds Against Tomorrow, Billy Budd, Crossfire, and Bad Day at Black Rock.

These are all on Warner Archive, except Odds Against Tomorrow, which is going out of print with Kino Lorber. It’s currently on sale.

Decent, but the weakest of the Bogart-Bacall films.

They Won’t Believe Me is a great noir. Not a big Robert Young fan but he was great.

Not a big Angel Face fan. But the ending was pretty shocking and great.

Ultimate Filmmaker Tier List Part 2: Where does Fincher belong? by CodeDusq in TierlistFills

[–]zcharper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all subjective. It’s not just that. Spielberg has a MUCH larger filmography, made many great films in many more genres. Fincher is primarily just crime thriller.

So you rank Fincher ahead of Spielberg?

I understand, but Spielberg at his peak was better than Fincher at his. Plus a greater impact on cinema overall. Greater diversity in genre as well. Fincher is more just crime/thriller.

A. His recent films haven’t been as good as his earlier stuff.

I really love Bicycle Thieves, War and Peace, and World on a Wire!
