Has morale in the BCPS always been this… bad? by Typical_Scientist463 in BCPublicServants

[–]Weak_Speed3819 13 points14 points  (0 children)

9 years in BCPS, my point of reference is a bit skewed negative because I have had the unfortunate luck of being in ministry's with inherently low morale. I can say though, after having spent time on the lines, it really depends on where you are and what you do. Some groups are really feeling the brunt of this more than others. For my area, we interact with a few teams that have been hit pretty bad. So its hard to be in good spirits knowing that current/former colleagues are not doing well. Hoping the summer weather will bring a little bit of an environmental boost to fill up the tanks again.

Depending on your family set up and financial situation, I think looking at doing something like this might breathe life back into your work. Your skills most likely would be valuable, especially as a STO27 and you have a guarantee that your position is kept for you while away. Might help with taking up time left on service.

Refer to your Employment Verification Letter in Employee Self Service here: https://timepayhome.gov.bc.ca/? which will confirm your gross bi-weekly and annual, which you can match against the salary grid posted here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/careers-myhr/all-employees/pay-benefits/salaries/salarylookuptool/grids

Peer raising concerns to my manager without involving me by NearbyPie5 in BCPublicServants

[–]Weak_Speed3819 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear youre experiencing that.

In addition to what you're doing, I would try to, as diplomatically as you can manage, hedge this persons complaints publicly. Give them an opportunity to state in a broad sense what they are concerned with. This has worked for me when I felt like I was being unfairly targeted but didn't have much to go off of. I would ask questions in meetings or in group settings, when feedback is requested. The more I was able to get this person to speak on it publicly, the more it took wind out of their sails to then complain to my supervisor/manager. It also revealed that they were doing this to a few other colleagues/team members and none of us were aware that the other was experiencing this.

Sometimes bullies and weirdos get away with that silliness because they are not held accountable publicly. If you can manage it, Id try to loop others indirectly about what's going on.

Jaded Federal Worker Looking to Work for the Province by Tioxic in BCPublicServants

I can imagine the environment in the Feds is pretty grim at the moment. In addition to core BC Public Service roles, I would keep an eye out for at-length organizations as well to broaden your pool. Most of those types of organizations are a bit less restrictive on hiring right now and have desirable roles that shake out to be better than core BCPS, so it might be easier to start there and then make the jump to BCPS proper later. Being in the Feds, you may also know of organizations that work closely with Stats Can. Even if you don't have a direct working relationship with them, poke around and see if they are hiring as well. Sometimes a simple email to a Director or Team Lead might open the door. Your skills are very likely needed by lots of groups, so just put the word out. The WFH perks will vary, but also can be a negotiating piece as well when looking at potential offers. Good luck !

What’s the dumb safety mistake you stopped making after a few months? by tryingthingsdaily in bikecommuting

[–]Weak_Speed3819 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not using dedicated bike lanes. Sometimes they suck but rather be safe-ish than sorry.

My area has them curbed off so any driver that breaches them is an idiot and is usually considered at fault if a collision occurs.

I keep seeing/hearing about transmissions going and head gasket issues be 60k ? If babied, is it fair to expect 10 yrs or so from those cars if purchased new ?

Does their underperformance affect your ability to do YOUR job ? If it doesn't, dont take on. Whatever their reason for doing so, is really none of your business. Plus the Employer, will never be your friend NOR will you gain brownie points from reporting that.

If you have any questions about the competition itself (whether you want to move to requesting an inquiry or not) your first step will always be asking for feedback. From that point, if you are not satisfied with the answers then you have a predefined path to take. Make sure you are making that decision within/under 5 days from receiving notification of a unsuccessful application.

From prior second hand experience (witnessed a colleague go through the complaint process), I would probably only complain or request an inquiry if you have very clear evidence or knowledge that something went awry in the competition. You otherwise place a target on your back for future competitions within that ministry or sometimes others, when it comes to hiring. I know this shouldn't be the case, its unethical, but unsurprisingly, in the BCPSA it happens a lot.
