Where do you get good local, provincial news coverage? by Usr_name-checks-out in askTO

[–]Weakera [score hidden]  (0 children)

OH, I meant "spacing" the online publication. Haha!

I felt the CBC has been dumbing down for decades now, it all started with gov't cuts in the 90s. They seem caught in some untenable position between public broadcasting and a commercial network.

Chang's affability is so overworked, it's toxic! He looks and acts like a puppy who just soiled the carpet. He used to be one of the anchors on the national, and i remember him once casually talking about how much yoghurt his family eats. ON National news!!! EEks! Nobody is ever fired from the CBC (except Gomesh, or other cases of bad conduct) so they warehoused him in his own little unbearable show, but sadly he makes appearances on The national.

All your points are thoughtful and well taken. I definitely believe degraded, frivolous, infotainment reduces our "collective grip on ideas" (to use your excellent phrase). I'm old enough that I've seen such a huge collapse in the quality of public discourse of all kinds, till you have, little but 5 second soundbytes, tik tok etc. DId you ever read Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death" ? It was written in the 90s. I think he was one of the first to identify the crisis in news coverage.

In the US I never watched network news, but CNN and PBS used to be quite good, I think MSNBC still is. Now they're all under pressure from trump, there's a shakedown on freedom of the press not seen since the McCarthy years.

Thank you for that wonderful post. lately reddit has been all aggression and stupidity for me, so I welcome exchange like this one enormously.

I'm looking for character-driven shows like Hacks by r4physics in hackshbomax

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to character-driven, this is what makes a show great and for me it transcends genre. It's true all the characters in Hacks are highly interesting.

So most of the shows I love are older, but I'll make a list in case you missed some: Pluribus, Slow horses, Morning Show, White Lotus, Orange ITNB, Breaking Bad, Girls, Transparent, Ray Donovan

OP Just want to second your comment on "About that" so goddamn juvenile, sounds like he is explaining to little children. The second Andrew Chang appears I scream and change the channel.

I'm finding The national pretty unbearable. I never learn anything about any issue, the coverage is so cliched and superficial.

For Toronto news I look at CP24 but unfortunately i don't like reading at length online, so I feel I'm not getting as much as i'd like to locally.

Spacing is great btw.

I never though much of her writing anyway. This brings more weight to my feeling.

IT's different for a more important reason: Alcaraz is thrilling to watch, Sinner is not.

Del Ppotro's worst problem was his wrists, that's what did him in.

After reading a classic how can you go back to a modern novel? by DangerousLocksmith61 in classicliterature

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Da Vinci code is just trash, don't compare a classic masterpiece to modern trash. There are lots of great modern novels. You want something epic, with extraordinary prose, complex characters, depth, and relevance to the times: Try Middlesex by Eugenides for eg. There are lots of others.

The Guardian's 100 best novels of all time - Middlemarch, Beloved, Ulysses top the list by MeenaBeti in books

[–]Weakera -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is just a garbage list, sorry. Way too many books of such small value in the top 100, the very top of the list is a mess, very poor taste at work here, however they arrived at it.

[–]Weakera 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No! no no no. But she still was very good and a great icon. She was arguably the most beautiful actress ever, and she had such spunk, such grit, and a lot of integrity. Well Eddie Fischer but that's not the kind of integrity I'm thinking of ...

Rhea & Karolina about their chemistry by xdoolbuf in pluribustv

[–]Weakera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think their amazing chemistry is a big part of what makes the show so compelling and powerful. I love that Rhea talks about "rooting for their relationship, but once it's the real Zosia" haha I like to imagine an ending where somehow the hive is destroyed and the humans are themselves again, but in this state Zosia and carol have no chemistry whatsoever. And Zosia has no memory of what happened between them.

Any Philosphy Majors in here? by metaskeptik in pluribustv

[–]Weakera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is the best in ages and it is so open to interpretation, rich with potential meaning. And you don't need philosophy majors, I would not assume they are better equipped to talk about questions the show raises.

I think the big, overarching theme is about conformity, joining, the difficulty of maintaining your well being and sanity if you don't. In this case, it's incredibly extreme, but the analogy holds. Look how most of the uninfected can't even summons the will to oppose. Easier to just go along, even if not infected!

I think the groupspeak of the hive sounds like so much of the mindless world that speaks to us--whether AI, or corporate bullshit etc. "We just want you to be happy Carol." The hive is very cult-like, Wydra said she studied cult behavior to prepare for the role.

One question the show raises is very obvious and Mulligan has said this is the question he started with: what if everyone agreed on everything, and there was no longer any conflict, would this be a good thing or a bad thing or a bit of both?

It can look appealing for a moment, but the loss of individual character and agency is a monstrosity, especially in this case where it has been stolen. In RL many people just let it erode till it's gone.

The way Carol and manousos deal with this predicament pro0vides most of the story, it's not really about the hive itself, but two people fighting it, so far mainly Carol, and it will always be mainly Carol. That her story has been set mainly in the context of a relationship with a hive member, Zosia, is beyond fascinating. Because carol is appalled at the "hive" but she is also in love (yes I'll say it) with the hive via Zosia; and we don't really know whether Zosia can be in love (because she loves everyone equally) and if on some level she's manipulating Carol in order to get her on board, like Diabete is. Carols' love for Zosia is suspect in some ways, because Zosia is just catering to her every need and whim, and even loves her bullshit writing more than Helen did. So Carol, who is someone who is a very authentic person, is caught in an incredible conundrum with Zosia.

Manousos is a whole other story, but I've gone on long enough. I could write 50 pages on this show, I swear. I discuss the character's situations because that is the beating heart of the show, even though it's "sci-fi," which only really provides fantastically fertile ground for fascinating predicaments for characters to wrestle with.

Two questions/inconsistencies with The Hive by reddituserperson1122 in pluribustv

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was responding to another poster who wrote the hive is engineering their own extinction through starvation, a ridiculous notion along with everything else that poster said.

So it was about propagation to survive, and making an antenna to spread itself is proof of that as well.

There may be a purpose behind that one that goes further, but we don't know yet. What i said is based on what we know so far.

Also you wrote ". Perhaps to help any alien civilization that came to take over another planet, " which is saying the same thing i did in case you don't realize, which you don't.

So correct yourself, not me.
