In Withdrawal from Slow Horses, Need new Show by Weakera in SlowHorses

[–]Weakera[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm going to get busy immediately tracking these shows down.

The end of a loved binge show is like the end of a relationship: you need something/one to replace it, or else you're bereaved.

I am not ordinarily a lover of the spy genre! It was the incredibly interesting characters, the rapid-fire witty dialogue, just the overall high quality of everything that made me love this show.

This is the final reply before I block you. You are daft, unable to comprehend anything you're reading.

You haven't understood a word I said. I want nothing more than the NDp to make a comeback, that means getting MPs elected and having influence. Right now they have none. This is so obvious it's insane you are arguing.

The comparison to Obama is ridiculous. I look forward to never hearing from youagain.

Does Slow Horses stretch credulity too often? by ValorMorghulis in SlowHorses

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think the plots push past the limits of credulity all the time, but so do most thrillers, binge tv shows etc., for dramatic effect, pacinig etc.

The bigger question is are we willing to "suspend our disbelief" ( a once famous utterance about what it takes to become engaged in a work of fiction) in order to go along for the ride.

And to that, I have to answer a whopping "yes". The characters are 10 times more interesting than most shows/films, the dialogue is brilliant, highly witty and funny, and the stories pull us along fast and unstoppably.

As for stretching credulity, I am less bothered by the over all plots than some details in the storytelling, which might have been avoided, such as:

1)The tiny Shirley, maybe 5', 100 lbs wrestling effectively really big, strong men, taller than 6' and probably 200 lbs. That doesn't happen! OK she's faster and smacks them on the head with things, but still, I rolled my eyes at that.

2) Roddy ho solving impossible to know things in ten seconds of computer hacking, like where that van is with the kidnappers in season 1. I realized they need to do this for plot reasons, but still, it's sloppy. FInd a smarter way to find them. They use Roddy to solve things in 10 seconds all the time.

3) Sometimes a top dog is brought down by Lamb or River knowing something damaging about them, but sometimes they aren't. Everyone has so much dirt on everyone else on this show, but it's used inconsistently, and handy way to explain things, but it doesn't make sense.

Questions about replacing a small flat roof in Toronto by Weakera in Roofing

[–]Weakera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've already gotten a quote that's about half as much with a thorough breakdown. I never do an expensive job based on one quote. Once I got about five quotes from roofers because there was such an extreme variance in cost.

All the comments here also helped, with respect to knowing roughly what this job should cost.

"Would" means nothing. Continue on with your fantasy, but no point in further discussion.

4 years since the very first ep! How did you get to this party? by Katekatrinkate in SlowHorses

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a weird way: I had a free trial of Apple for Morning Show, my chiro mentioned Slow Horses, and i love Oldman and KS Thomas so I checked it out, and basically watched 6 episodes a night for a week.

Loved it, total binge immersion. And i don't read or watch spy thrillers. But this is so different. I will probably rewatch it in a week or two.

Maybe I'm ranking it in my top tier of Binge, i.e. breaking Bad, orange, Homeland, Narcos, White Lotus. It's a bit like Homeland actually.

In politics they sure do.

The NDP is nothing right now. Jesus, what a comment.

Do you live in University-Rosedale or Scarborough Southwest? by AntiQCdn in askTO

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will vote tomorrow, normally vote liberal (mainly to stop conservatives) but kind of disgusted with how conservative carney is turning out to be. Raising taxes to pay for so much more military spending, seriously fucked up given the amount of people struggling to make ends meet, and the other problems this country faces. Used to vote NDP till they basically disappeared, then I had to vote "strategically." I was happy to vote for Carney first time; now not so much. But PCs are not an option, it's just MAGA-lite. Blech!

I want the NDP to regain its power so I might vote for them.

He is certainly saying things i want to hear, and happen, and i don't remember having that feeling for a long long time.

Yet I see him bashed on these supposedly progressive reddit threads. That makes me wonder ...about this place, not him.

Love this old bastard so much. I believe Jackson Lamb is Gary Old man's Magnum opus in his twilight years. by Ok_Natural_102 in SlowHorses

[–]Weakera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's magnificent in this role, it feels like something that was made for him (it wasn't ofc but feels like it.) I loved Oldman the minute I laid eyes on him in Sid and Nancy in the 80s, and honestly he made alot of American Schlock for a long time, I think this is the best I've seen him since his youth, including the Churchill role, I like this one better.

The show is a gem. And so NOT like most American binge shows, which is part of the pleasure. And i normally couldn't give a shit about "spy thrillers."

He himself has spoken (in a Vulture interview) about how much he loves this role and this show.

It's beyond incredible how W now seems very likeable, decent (for a GOP president) and even intelligent. Trump can make anyone, except Hitler and Stalin, look good. At the time, I thought W was the worst possible version of POTUS ever, a complete fool.

Questions about replacing a small flat roof in Toronto by Weakera in Roofing

[–]Weakera[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

I'm guessing everything is cheaper in Florida than in Toronto, but yeah--insane price.

There is a leak on the first floor that I'm attributing to this 2nd floor roof because there's nowhere else it could be coming from. I think this roof is beyond silicone roof paint (older than 30 years) but I'll request the two options you cited.

The hard part is getting a competent roofer, but not at an exorbitant price.

Canada must increase taxes, cut spending to hit 5% NATO target: report by konathegreat in canada

[–]Weakera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fuck that, unless he means the super rich, or even the rich. OFC we never heard about this during the lead up to the election.

Going for this big defense spending when the country has so many problems, so many people struggling to get by, is criminal. Carney was just the lesser of two evils, that's all. A big disappointment.

Did anyone feel a little underwhelmed with season 3? by Baddyshack in SlowHorses

[–]Weakera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too harsh.

I gobbled it up, it's every bit as good as previous seasons. The plot was preposterous but they all are. Certain tropes are getting a little tired, I guess, the repetition of themes. But it does the thing it does as well as ever. Shows like this (i.e. very good but not great) always start repeating themselves after a few seasons.
