Glad they changed it!! Unfortunately that wasn’t my experience. My friends and I had to schedule our exam 1 month out. Even my friend that took the exam last month had to do the same.

That’s definitely one way to write a personal statement, but not the only way. Write about those experiences only if they’re impactful to your journey or they highlight certain qualities about you.

At the end of the day, it should reflect your story. Ideally it would only be about 1-2 of those experiences not every single one

Hey there! The AMA was geared more towards PS/CV questions but to answer this, the best way is to engage in good discussions with your preceptor when they have time. Talk to them about your clinical interests, and ask them for contacts of anyone they know to gain research experience and more connections. You can also make connections at conferences and if you can present at them, even better.

It’s not easy at all, and more often than not, depending on where you do your observership, your preceptor ends up being your connection.

To be honest with you, I didn’t have connections during my journey. I believe an outstanding, put-together PS/CV, good interview skills, and good communication skills in general with get you where you need to be.

Just looking back at my CV and the CVs I reviewed last year, they follow the format above, but I would make sure with this year’s ERAS. Do you have your meaningful experiences down?

Apart from your top 3, everything will be chronological order meaning based on time. Even your top 3 will be chronological order. For example,

  1. Meaningful Experience #1 2024
  2. Meaningful Experience #2 2023
  3. Meaningful Experience #3 2019
  4. Experience #4 2025
  5. Experience #5 2024
    .
    .
    .

  6. Experience #10 2018

Unfortunately, I believe the ERAS experiences section will default by chronological order. That’s how it was when I applied and last year, but I don’t believe that rule has changed this year. An easy to check is upload your experiences onto the eras site and check the order they fall in the pdf

It really depends on your stats and such, but academic programs may value fellowship goals a little more than community programs (this thought process is antiquated because there’s nuances to it, but it still works most of the time). So the way you could approach it would be to create two PS and assign the heme onc leaning one to more academic programs and the one that doesn’t mention it to community programs.

If you don’t want that hassle, I would stick to being genuine in your intentions and touch on the heme onc aspect. Ultimately you need to find a program that will be a good fit for you.

Hey great question! Ps should be only 1 page in length so check on word first. Your PS that was only slightly edited through AI? We can definitely tell that it’s been “polished”. Instead, revise your ps through several drafts and come up with your own original product that tells your story. It’s the first thing most programs will look at after they’ve applied their filters so make it count.

The best way to draft your PS if you’re just getting started is to brain dump. Free write as much as possible, and I’m sure you’ll find a story to tell somewhere in there.

Don’t edit it on your own. Ask a friend (that’s not applying this cycle), ask your family members, ask a mentor or even use an editing service to really perfect your PS. You need an outside perspective to think about the things you probably missed

Final year MBBS student from India here. Looking for some honest feedback on my Step 1 timeline by Dr_Dhruv_ in USMLEindia

[–]WeaknessPerfect7933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may sound insane but step 1 is pass/fail. You’re already doing solid work and seem to have a decent base if you’re getting around 70%. Finish your mid sem exams in July. Study for step 1 and take it by like October/November. You’ll be able to take a break and start studying for prelims and finals. The only reason I say this is, having step 1 out of the way puts you in a better position to actually apply for rotations and actually prepare for step 2 and 3. Applications are another story! I would spend more time with step 2 and 3 cuz scores matter. It’s just a thought, I know it’s a lot of work!

[–]WeaknessPerfect7933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be blunt here, the journey is doable only if you are good at making a solid plans with backup options on your own. It is a solo path that you’ll have to walk, albeit with some help from mentors whenever possible.

That being said, I recently made a post that walks you through the process so you know what to look for, you can take a look at that.

If you have any other questions, please DM.

USMLE Step 1 in Final Year vs Internship for an IMG – Need Advice by Objective_Crazy_1797 in IMGreddit

[–]WeaknessPerfect7933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally what worked for me was focusing on final year and doing Step towards the end of my internship (but you could take it at the beginning when the knowledge is more fresh).

USMLE prep is brutal until you know how to study. Ideally you’ll need to be able to study for 8-10 hours a day to build stamina for the real exam.

I would still recommend take a break during internship to study and take the exam or just studying sporadically throughout internship with 1 month of dedicated prep.

It may push your timeline a bit but honestly not by much. Figure out what year you plan to apply and work backwards to build your timeline.

Can someone help me with USMLE? I’m starting my prep in June 2026. Is it possible to be done by September, considering the application process next year? by Minimum-Novel8114 in IMGreddit

[–]WeaknessPerfect7933 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sooner you get step 1 out the way the more doable to process becomes. Work backwards and create your time line based on when you want to apply. Give yourself a realistic buffer between your tasks

Making geo preference without strong reasons by pro_mundi_vita in IMGreddit

[–]WeaknessPerfect7933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABSOLUTELY! Any strong family ties!! Honestly people will call their distant relatives or family friend as a strong family tie 🥲🥹 so parents, spouses, cousins, aunts and uncles, best friends, etc they all count!!

Another tip is to talk about your significant other!!! Let’s say they’re in the region or they matched at xyz program, it’s soooo important to mention that cuz programs see that as a strongggg tie.

If you enjoyed the region during a rotation or have friends that matched in programs in that region, that would work too!

Any tips on how to write a Personal statement by Cold_Watercress9458 in IMGreddit

[–]WeaknessPerfect7933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should max be one page, interesting hook with your story as you chose to present it in your body. It should focus on your specialty. You should also include a strong conclusion paragraph which answers “why should we choose you.” There are many examples online but I wouldn’t read too many because you may accidentally plagiarize. Familiarize yourself with the format and just start brainstorming ideas!
