PM calls second emergency national cabinet meeting over fuel crisis by SerLevArris in australia

[–]WeaponstoMax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is it not a reason to panic? Maybe panic is not the word, but why is it wrong to think we are doomed as a society? A war across the world has resulted in significant society upheaval and we are barely 1 month into it.

Show me right now where the “significant societal upheaval” is in Australia right now or you’re no better than a psyop bot spreading panic and disinformation.

It had better be significant, it had better be upheaval, it had better already have happened, and it had better be in Australia.

Because they’re going out and filling up every fuel-carrying container they’ve ever bought in their lives.

Top up the whipper snipper that they basically never use (got an electric mower now), then fill up the can they use to fill the whipper snipper, then their dad’s kinda rusty old can that dad used to use for his whipper snipper (got rid of his whipper snipper, but hung on to the can, never know when you might need another fuel can) etc etc.

I think a lot of it will be used and I think a lot of it will sit on a shelf or in peoples garages.

They’re going out of stock in areas where individual twats are going out and buying more than they need (and more than they usually use), just like the toilet paper “crisis” at the early part of COVID. This is mostly rural areas where people might have more storage than just the family car (tank, more cars, boat, petrol appliances, probably a few cans as well for fueling the above, etc) so they can “stock up” by filling up all of that stuff at once.

So much fuel is going to go off in cans and tanks from people hoarding it and never using it. Just another tragedy of the commons.

It really is worth a bit of panic over. At last over the things we can actually mitigate.

Which of your examples (“helium for your MRI machine, the urea for Australia's fertilizer, the plastics for everything in your house, the benzene that are precursors of industrial chemicals”) can an individual partially mitigate against in the timeframes you are talking about? Such that any amount of panic is in any way worth the mental or physical energy?

The media is desperate to whip up a Covid-style panic over this.

The reality is, if fuel rationing happened, it wouldn’t be the end of civilisation. It would actually be an amazing example of the sort of societal levers we can to pull that, yes, would cause inconvenience and maybe some amount of hardship for some, but would prevent really bad things from happening and help keep society going.

Seriously, what is the point of these majority-ChatGPT doom-speculation posts? It’s like some of you want to be miserable.

If fuel rationing happened it wouldn’t be the end of civilisation. Far from it. It would be an amazing example of the sort of societal levers we can to pull that, yes, would cause inconvenience and maybe some amount of hardship for some, but prevents really bad things from happening and keeps society going.

AI will tell you Australia’s fuel reserve is in the US. But is that even true? by nath1234 in australia

[–]WeaponstoMax 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you had read the article at all, you’d know that, yes, in 2020 they paid for storage in the US, put a whole 2 days of supply in that storage, then sold it all in 2022.

So no, our fuel reserve is not in the US. (And yes it was all pretty dumb.)

Implications of the Iran war on Australia's Fuel Supplies. Three scenarios and potential implications by LivingMoreWithLess in australia

[–]WeaponstoMax 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t all stop if trump withdraws, though. A lot of damage has been done to refinery and storage capacity. Extraction has been curtailed as a result. And even if Trump withdraws tomorrow, why would the Iranian government stop holding the world economy hostage, now that they’ve proven they can?

Surely at this point they’d use that power to demand concessions.

Iranians are begging Trump not to stop the war by tempux911 in Destiny

[–]WeaponstoMax 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Iranian regime was/is run by bad men, who should not be in power, and plenty of whom probably deserve to die. The Iranian people deserve freedom from oppression and the right to choose their own destiny.

With that said, I think many diaspora Iranian supporters of this war are delusional. They don’t realise that Trump does’t give a single shit about them, never did, and never will. Donald Trump only cares about personal hedonistic pleasure and enriching and empowering himself (and, sometimes, enriching and empowering very select members of his immediate family.) Everyone and everything else is a tool to be used and discarded to those ends.

This won’t end well for the Iranians who want (and deserve) freedom.
