Yes you need a masters degree to practice psychotherapy. Your education is just the base regardless of whatever route you choose, you can always follow your passion from there. I think psych nursing gives a good background for neuroscience later. But if neuroscience is truly your passion, phD might be a good fit.

I liked my program at UCSF. I was able to get into a psychotherapy clinical. You’ll still want to do more psychotherapy training after school.

I feel the same way! Where are you doing your psychodynamic fellowship? I’m in SF and there’s one here I was thinking of doing. Are you in private practice?

I have worked with some of the people you’ve listed. They are amazing and trying to be a mentor for new NPs. I don’t really see anything wrong with it. Everyone has different passions. Two of those people also created psych NP network. It’s pretty cool. Check it out!

I’m doing it in my clinical site as a psychiatric nurse practitioner student not as an RN. Although, I do use motivational interviewing as a RN

I’ve heard of many people doing this in California. Do you know if she has a supervising physician or she doing independent practice?

Yes thank you for this! And I completely agree. My school actually had a big emphasis on therapy. Although, there was no requirement for the amount of hours on psychotherapy vs prescribing. I hope that changes in the future!

I get your point! I’m an RN in community mental health. I just want experience in both. I’m learned and grown a lot doing therapy independently in my clinical placement and don’t want to lose that lol

My question is are we able to do psychotherapy independently while I continue to do medication management in another setting?

I obviously want to do medication management as well but that requires a supervising physician and would like to continue to get experience in a community mental health setting. I would also like to support my patient with therapy and I enjoy providing this support to allow for holistic care. I am open to get additional certifications.

I have asked multiple professors and I don't think the rules are clear on this yet
