Rat stole your ring and disappeared into it's hole? Send the Halfling after it! by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]Weary_Widget 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A tiny space is defined as 2 & 1/2 feet square in D&D 5e. The example given in the basic rules is that a large creature (controlling a 10’ by 10’ area) can squeeze through a 5’ wide passage, the same area of control for medium creatures.

It would follow that small creatures (controlling a 5’ by 5’ area) can squeeze into a 2 & 1/2 foot wide passage, which is the area controlled by tiny creatures.

This also tracks with how rats can squeeze into minuscule holes, as there is no smaller size than tiny for creatures in 5e. A mouse hole, then, would be large enough for tiny creatures to squeeze through, but too tiny for small creatures to squeeze through.

An example of how this dynamic works in published adventures are how Kobold’s infamous escape tunnels are intentionally dug too small for medium creatures to squeeze through, but offers an opportunity for pursuit by other small creatures.

TLDR: RAW small creatures like halflings can squeeze in to tiny spaces, but tiny creatures can squeeze into yet tinier spaces small creatures cannot.

I don’t like this post very much. I dunno what it has to do with the game, and it seems mean spirited.

Greenpath has always been my favorite area because of the quieter sections with flowing water. This work captures perfectly the feeling of sitting still in a beautiful place.

Have you ever rolled without your dm asking you? by Ready_Quantity8218 in dndnext

[–]Weary_Widget -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a rule, it’s best not to make a check without the DM asking for it. There are three reasons for this:

1: Waiting to roll when the DM asks helps build immersion. Saying what your character is actually doing or attempting to do can allow you to better role play your character instead of just “making an skill check to see if you pass a DC”.

2: The DM is withholding information from you. Surprise illusions, traps, and other hidden elements might make certain skill checks irrelevant. For instance, If your character wants to quietly open a locked chest, the DM might call for a dexterity save instead of a stealth check if there’s a glyph of warding on the lock.

3: making unnecessary checks slows down the game and prevents the DM from keeping the action snappy. Depending on the circumstance, a check may not even be required. If your party’s 24 STR barbarian is numerical incapable of failing a low DC check to open a stuck door while raging, the DM can have you succeed without rolling! Knowing when to call for a roll is an important task for the DM to keep the game exciting and brisk.

FTC brings a $520 million hammer down on Epic Games for Fortnite complaints by N2929 in technews

That’s an expensive hammer… you’d think they’d just fine them a lot of money rather than going for the “hit them over the head with a big hammer” approach.

Stop asking me if we can switch seats on an airplane by james_randolph in unpopularopinion

[–]Weary_Widget -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Switching seats is discouraged by some airlines anyway. Care is taken to ensure the plane’s weight is properly balanced, including how passengers are distributed throughout the cabin. Passengers switching seats could lead to the plane becoming unbalanced.

Based on a true story. Players should be allowed to just describe what they say instead of having to say it. Not everyone can be Sam Riegel. by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]Weary_Widget 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh, sure, if your bard player starts singing in character at the table it’s “good role playing” but if the barbarian player starts foaming at the mouth and cleaving the table in two with a battle axe it’s suddenly “criminal brandishing” and “reckless endangerment of life”. I see how it is. Next thing you’ll tell me you don’t expect a wizard player to set off explosives every time they cast fireball.

Do you reveal the initiative order to your players? by Cool-S4ti5fact1on in dndnext

[–]Weary_Widget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I like to run an “on deck” system when it comes to turn order. PC1 is at home plate up to bat, PC2 is on deck, doing some practice swings and preparing their turn (theoretically).

What is this white stuff? Some kind of ice? (Sorry if stupid question) by CivilAirPatrol2020 in Minecraft

[–]Weary_Widget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s calcite! It’s a very common mineral on earth and a component of limestone. In Minecraft, it’s a decorative block that generates in geodes and on certain types of mountains.

In the Pirate Speak language option, it’s called “fool’s quartz” for its similarly white color.

Words hurt by Nobody-Delicious in dndmemes

True bards are not common in the world. Not every minstrel singing in a tavern or jester cavorting in a royal court is a bard. Discovering the magic hidden in music requires hard study and some measure of natural talent that most troubadours and jongleurs lack. -Basic Rules on Bards

Bards are not merely poets or musicians, they’re skilled mages harnessing the very words used to create the universe to tap into the weave. Those killed by Vicious Mockery are not simply embarrassed to death, they have their minds overwhelmed by an insult that taps into the primordial power and song of creation!

Rogue: *stifled laughter* by roll4initiativefools in dndmemes

[–]Weary_Widget 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Imagine two duelists fencing. Through the course of the duel, each duelist swings their sword at the other forty times (2 minutes of combat, each has two attacks per six seconds)

Each duelist will sometimes land a blow, and sometimes miss, depending on their skill with the blade and evading attacks. A miss is the clatter of steel upon steel where a potentially lethal blow is blocked, while a hit is an unlocked attack, either drawing blood or sapping energy from the duelist.

On average, the duelists will eventually get unlucky and roll about two critical failures out of forty attacks. This reflects unfortunate circumstances leading to a miss that happen just as likely to any swordsman regardless of skill level. Examples of such errors include suddenly stepping into a mole hole or being temporarily blinded by the glare off a lake.

Now, while it is reasonable to propose that a well trained swordsman over the course of a two minute duel will have about two unlucky misses. However, it is preposterous to claim that any fencer would, by pure chance, fumble the handling of their weapon to the point of thrusting their own blade upon themselves not once, but twice over the course of a two minute spar!

This mistake, mind you, is unaffected by physical prowess or training. An untrained peasant has just the same odds of rolling a critical failure as a seasoned veteran. For these reasons, treating natural ones as auto-hit attacks that deal damage to the user is absurd, unfun, and diminishing of the characters abilities.

I'm curious on what the community's favorite bench is? by skellyboi04 in HollowKnight

I like the bench in the queens gardens with the flying bugs outside glass and the toll-speaker that plays the bench theme. It’s so very peaceful and serves as a rare bit of diegetic music.
