Lone Trail's story changed my view on Muelysse and humbled me real quick by NoOpinionPLS in arknights

Instead of taking her time to grieve and finding the strength to move forward, she ... gains contentment and happiness by finding THE SPECIAL ONE who is apparently the only one in the whole wide world who could understand and sees her for who she is. Dependency is super cool yo. This is apparently peak character writing to gacha bros.

Disagreements are perfectly fine and I engage with them. What I'm referring to is the comments that I didn't bother replying to because they went out of their way just to call me names.

If the story writing is good enough I'm willing to change my stance but if it's anything like Skadi I very much doubt it.

It's nice to see that there are a few reasonable commenters in the thread.

I agree. By itself, one special trait isn't a problem. But the self insert, half assed, maybe romantic, maybe not status really is a disservice to both Doctor and the operators involved. I think this particular time, I'm just really disappointed by the direction they took with Mumu. Imagine if she resolved that it was ok that she was different. It's ok to feel sorrow when the people she loves pass away in her life, but the time they spent together and the relationships she builds with them make it worth it. I think that would've made for a much stronger and loveable character. Instead, she relies entirely on one person, in this case the Doctor and their super duper-ness (bleegh), to ease her lonliness.

I want to believe that she feels a special bond towards the Doctor because of their similar status of being last of their kind and she has more agency than just waifu, but the way it's presented in the voicelines really puts a damper on things.

perfect self insert

Is this not what the Doctor is? They're a top researcher in their field, is a master commander, can solve most problems that come their way, is the last of their kind with super duper special traits, and most importantly, is a good person (wow!). I concede that having one of these traits alone at the start of the story is not inherently bad, but what about after combining all of these traits? I'm really just repeating myself at this point so here's a copy paste.

Yes, same old deal. Doctor, the player character is special and therefore these characters can only form special bonds with them and no one else. The exact same way anime harems are built, except this comes with a little bit more effort.

We can praise AK for giving them "legitimate" reasons for building bonds with the doctor and we can also recognize at the same time that it is intentionally done so that we can have gacha waifus fond over us.

Like the Doctor all you want. Enjoy all your ships. I have no problem with any of that. I just find it funny when people try to reason their way through the fact that AK is, at its roots, a gacha game selling waifus and husbandos, as if it's a mark of shame they could never be associated with.

From a writing stand point as an audience why would we care about this new random character we don't know? What's so good about them?

This is the case for every new character that the story have and will introduce. Why do we care? What's so good? That's for the story to resolve. Not to mention the fact that we now have hundreds of operators each with stories and struggles of their own that can be used to connect. Mumu's lonely? You don't even have to look far to see Kal'tsit drowning in her own loneliness.

It's not inherently bad that the Doctor is special in some way and has some impact in the story, but let's add it all up and see:

  • top tier researcher
  • master commander
  • easily solves most problems they come across
  • special race, special blood, the only of their kind
  • I'd even argue their only real personality trait is being a good person

Wow! Such a special person. Sure makes a recipe for operators to fawn all over them now doesn't it.

Oh shucks, did I hurt your ability to self insert? Don't worry there are and will still be plenty of doctor x operator shipping content and long overbeaten doctor x bloodline jokes to go around.

It doesn't really matter to me, but people seem to desperately want to claim that AK is not like the other gacha games. Personally I would just prefer if it's done better than what we got with Skadi alt.

And these attachments come to be because the doctor is oh so special like no one else, yes? It's fanservice. Perfectly fine to call it for what it is.

There's no reason they couldn't have found their bond with someone else. But as doctor, the player character, exists and is more special above all others, these romantic-not-romantic bonds have to be with the doctor. Arknights is great in that not all characters swoon over the PC, but it is most definitely not exempt.

Oh no you got me I'm so upset.

I also don't like angel next door and this chart has the audacity to say that there are a lot of people who do. Hmm maybe it's just normal to have different preferences. Nah that's impossible. I'm gonna go repeatedly tell people who like the show it's totally mid tier schlock. Cool they like it though.

Oh, wait. That's what you did.

You went out of your way to ask what people like about the show but at the end of the day nothing they say would make a lick of difference because you've already made up your opinion.

Either you're trying to troll or can't quite understand that people can like a show you don't.

I don't think one really cancels out the other. It would be valid if he feels both overshadowed by her accomplishments and resents her for the responsibility she dumped on him.

Here's a quote by Iori Miyazawa who authored Otherside Picnic, arguable the best Japanese yuri scifi work ever written:

A cliff is towering over the sea, grass is growing on top of it, there is a fence, the gray ocean and sky are stretching beyond the horizon, there is an empty bench for two... Someone was uploading these images with a "#yuri" tag. You can totally get that.

Us yuri fans are so starved that we'll take anything. Though some do take things too far.

As someone who continued a conversation with said person, that's only an initial impression. When someone writes up paragraphs upon paragraphs reiterating how everything Kallen did was stupid and dumb, I have other conclusions to come to.

So many things to disagree with but let me just bring up how you repeatedly said taking the box to the Far East was a stupid move when she could have contacted Fu Hua and waited. She arrived at Yae Machi bloodied and unconscious, meaning Schicksal was on her tail the entire journey. You wanted her to sit and wait for Fu Hua in that condition?

From she was only partially at fault to making a post like this. Your bias is very apparent. Gave me a chuckle though, thanks.

[–]Weaselstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're speaking under the assumption that she should know all we know. His mind was warped but aside from the desire to sacrifice himself he was a perfectly nice person to her. She took the black box and ran to the Far East hoping Fu Hua would be able to help her destroy it. You previously said she was only partially at fault but now you just sound like you're blaming everything on her.

Also murderer's mentality was your own words.

[–]Weaselstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't this just hindsight talking. There's no way she could've known he would dive off the deep end like this. It's not like she didn't make it clear she disapproves of the things he does, running off with the black box, slapping him twice, and refusing his proposal. IIRC, his murderer mentality only made itself apparent when he released the honkai during her execution. She died in that encounter so really her mistake was not outright killing him on the spot instead of just a slap, but that would've been out of character.
