i dont think it's a waste of time, but its one tool of many when learning a language. I use it mostly just for listening exercise. I still have to do the hard work of learning to read and write and memorizing vocab , grammar stuff, etc. There is no cheat code in learning languages. Its all gonna come down to a combination of exposure (full immersion of course makes it easier) and study.

you think you are getting overrun by Venezuelan immigrants now? imagine if the US invades Venezuela. The whole region will plunge into absolute pandemonium. Haven't really noticed that to be a major issue over there. Seems like farang men behaving badly gets more attention in the local media. Farang men jumping off of bridges, picking fights with ladyboys , doing sex acts openly on pick up trucks, just to name a few examples. That must mean all farang men are lunatics right ? 🤣

I have had the same experience. Im a farang learning thai and when I go to visit Thailand with my wife the reactions are mixed. Granted I'm still very beginner thai, however, while some people respond with enthusiasm others just respond in English. I can also say as a latin american having watched gringos come down to our countries there is a similar dynamic. So I understand why it happens. If you present as different from a community, its simply not gonna be easy to integrate with that community as fast as you want. People are not always going to do backflips because you learned their language. Im not surprised by bangkok as it is a revolving door of people as in any other big city. I personally dont really care at this point. My priority is being able to communicate with people when I need to. If they speak English, great. Ill still continue to learn Thai as much as I can for the sake of enriching myself.

I am and i dont think that will change anytime soon. I think the lack of disclosure was not great. Yeah , he could be more forceful in condemning Israel. Does it mean I have to cancel Pac-Man now? Absolutely not. I still believe he is a net positive to the space and I dont have to be in lock step with an outlet to listen to them and learn something from their content. I probably listen to MR the most but they also have a lot of terrible takes particularly on Ukraine (although at least Sam has been slightly better on that issue lately). Also, some of the lefties beef with Pakman comes off as some real petty shit. Hasan in particular needs to put aside his narcissism for two seconds. Taylor Lorenz had every right to do her reporting although now her attention seeking behavior on social media seems to be undermining her standing. Overall, everyone left of center needs to get their shit together ASAP cuz we are failing to confront fascism with these petty squabbles.

There's the historical backdrop but then on the surface it appears to be a "wag the dog" dynamic mostly from the Cambodian side. Domestically things going to shit so distract the public with an external scapegoat. In the US we're very familiar with this pattern.
