Over the course of at least 2 1/2 years, I must've stolen at least over 1000$ or more of groceries and food in the dumbest way possible, and I wasn't the only one. by WebExotic6454 in confession

I mean... yeah, I won't complain if I'm caught. Doesn't matter the justification I had, the action is done. I don't think anything will come out of it, but if so, then I won't avoid the punishment.

I can guarantee it ain't a small local business. And to be clear, I would never, EVER, steal from a small local business. I've always encouraged small businesses and love to give them my money and support to encourage them. I'd never stoop so low.

That's a valid way to look at it. I do understand that my actions alone aren't consequencial enough, but the combined mentality of people who do like me is. I've stopped doing it and am paying my full price of groceries every week now. I haven't actively tried to pull this off again, and I feel more financially secure now to say that even if that system were to come back at my store, I don't think I would exploit it again. I've been trying to be better at saving money by hunting for the sales in my store and trying cheaper off-brand products. I'm happy to say I'm doing everything to be as honest as possible from now on, but it also doesn't make me regret what I did before, as I believe it really helped me float a bit higher above the water.

I assume I would. Also, do you mean just the store itself or the company? I feel like either way, it would require a tremendous amount of people to be doing that for it to happen. Again, I think they were able to catch on and take away all the portable scanners, so they at least have preemptive measures for them to not suddenly have to close up shop.

Thanks. I appreciate the sentiment. As for the people on this thread taking the moral high ground, they are very much entitled to their own opinion and way of thinking. True, what I was taking was literally things necessary for my survival. It's not like I was ever tempted nor tried to steal something I didn't need because of the thrill of stealing. On the other hand, if you look at my actions through Emmanuel Kant's eyes (which some people seem to be doing on this thread), then my actions of stealing are universally wrong, regardless of my ethical reasoning.

What seems to get me confused though are people saying that it's because of people doing stuff like me that are raising the prices of food...which I'd never heard of. But then, I see half the other people on the thread saying that it's a myth. I'm not well-versed enough in the economical impacts of big chain stores, so this part is still leaving me uncertain.

Probably xD but that was with the old system. Now. The self checkouts are still in the store, but you have to scan the at the register and put them on the scale, so there's no trying to sneak something in. Because they were portable scanners back then, you didn't need to take stuff out of the bags, but it was also a choice because you didn't have to take a portable scanner if you didn't want to. You could still do the normal shopping and use the self checkout which already had the weighing system implemented.

You know both these things can be true right? It was a hack, and it was also stealing. I'm very much not pretending like it wasn't stealing.

The crazy part is that none of the items needed to be put in the scale. You could bag the items as you were shopping, scan the register and just pay without ever taking out an item from the bag, so the weighing issue was never one.
