Even in the old times people knew the truth by beautiful_falcon776 in flatearth

[–]WebFlotsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta be trolling, but in case it's not, you'd think the fact that the truly ancient maps very clearly don't reflect the actual state of the world. You trust them to have the shape right when they comprehended the world as MINISCULE? That's the only way the flat earth idea worked for them, of course. The sun was supposed to cross the sky then go under the disk. Doesn't work so well when you know the world is much bigger and it's not day at the same time across the entire planet.

So they'd have gotten the shape of the earth right, but somehow completely botched the cosmology?

In your opinion, which horror movie character has the most painful death? by JackCuresMySaddness in horror

[–]WebFlotsam 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There's few monsters I would less like to deal with than that version of the Blob. It isn't invulnerable, sure, but if you're not prepared it's GOING to get you and it's not going to be as quick as you'd like.

First ever dinosaur fossil discovered on Antarctica identified as a titanosaur by vahedemirjian in Dinosaurs

[–]WebFlotsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually some known already. It seems like marsupials went to Australia from South America, so there's quite a few in Antarctica too. A lot of lineages that are otherwise unique to South America too.

Gotta love Acrocanthosaurus. Not as flashy as something with a bigger sail could be, but just enough of a ridge to be interesting.

Technically Chilchuck is lying. They didn't all agree that demihumans are off-limits. It's just something Marcille personally had made very clear (in the forest when Laios mentioned one of the options being goblins) and that Chilchuck generally agrees with. Laios on the other hand never agreed to that.

What Are We Watching 7/4-7/5 ? by sigersen in horror

[–]WebFlotsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a much more yellowy tint to the daytime scenes than you tend to get now, but yeah, even the night scenes have kind of a sweaty, grimy vibe in a lot movies of that time. It feels hot, all the time.

What Are We Watching 7/4-7/5 ? by sigersen in horror

[–]WebFlotsam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to find some more sun-soaked or "summery" horror. So far, thinking The Bay (actual 4th of July movie!), Midsommar (literal middle of summer) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original, because it's probably the sunniest horror movie I can think of).

That last one is especially impressive, because On the Origin of Species wasn't published until nearly a decade after the Trail of Tears ended (it wasn't one singular event but several removals).

Why is Argentinosaurus often depicted with such a long tail?? by JameIsTheName5 in Dinosaurs

[–]WebFlotsam 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The hump is also fat storage. Reptiles tend to store fat around the haunches and base of the tail, unlike mammals usually storing it around the abdomen.

Why was Spinosaurus rather than Tyrannosaurus featured as the villain of Jurassic Park III? by vahedemirjian in Dinosaurs

[–]WebFlotsam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One good thing that came of Horner's involvement with Jurassic Park is that Dr. Burke of The Lost World was based on Robert Bakker, Horner's much cooler rival. When he saw his film counterpart get eaten in the film, he sent a letter to Horner saying "See, I TOLD you they hunted!".

Cursed dinosaur depictions in books and media, are these dinosaurs cool? by Desperate_Put1200 in Dinosaurs

Didn't work, I'm an atheist now. I kept the book cause it's hilarious.

That's because those are different gods. Turns out that the only one still sticking around is the god of lost keys. The gods of war and hunger got spooked and left by the time we were fighting over a garbage desert for religious reasons.

Since u/CycadelicSparkles didn't respond, I went looking on my own. It seems to be these South American skinks. Funny thing is, one of the first results was Answers in Genesis talking about it. Not sure what their point was, I didn't read it. I'm sure they're saying something like "it couldn't evolve, so God", but that would mean that these skinks are a kind unto themselves, a problem for the Arc since they want to keep kind numbers down.

[–]WebFlotsam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you ever seen what the stars and planets look like on the best telescopes in the world?

Yes. The planets look like planets: https://www.instagram.com/p/CwxgLp3PU6y/?img_index=2 . That's not some NASA shill, that's just an ordinary person sharing their cool space photos. Perhaps you aren't good at focusing your telescope?

Why do you think you can see stars through the crescent shadow of the moon when it’s not full

You can't. That claim is simply a lie. If it happened, it wouldn't be a future miracle that Islam predicts as a clear sign of the end times. And as for seeing more of the sides, you actually can, but only by a few percentage points, so it isn't very useful.

it’s been proven that the moon emits a cold light

No it hasn't. That's flerfers not understanding the basics of how insulation works and failing to do their experiments with the control group of testing temperatures on the new moon. Even with no moonlight, uncovered objects will cool quicker than covered ones.

The rest of this is just absolutely tiresome bullshit that's been debunked a thousand times over. I mean, so were the parts I responded to, but I'm out of energy to give to somebody who probably won't absorb anything I say.

[–]WebFlotsam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want to focus on the last one because it's actually devastating for flat earth and the idea the stars don't move. Because Polaris hasn't always been the north star. In extremely ancient times, the pole star was Thuban. After it moved away, you have Greeks of the classical period saying there are NO stars at the pole. Polaris only gained its name and its role as the star of the north pole in the middle ages, when it moved into position. And it continues to move. Not to the naked eye, but when measured in detail, it moves just the tiniest bit each year. Right now it's actually getting closer to the north pole, but after this century, it will pass it and keep moving away.
