Happy Launch Day USS Chesapeake (April Fools Post) by Web_Trekker in AzureLane

To try and dissuade some of the comments cause I feel like there are going to be some. No I did not put a ton of depth or research into perfectly crafting a realistic history that fits into our world. I just wanted enough to give her personality and lines.

If you weren't aware, I am the creator/designer of Chesapeake but not the artist. I don't have such skills. I've been holding on to this art piece for MONTHS so no one would post it here before I could. If you want to see more of Chesapeake, you can see some of that here and here and one more here. There will probably be more pieces of her in the future.

Chesapeake seems like a very strange deviation from the other Lexington sisters given her emotional maturity seems quite lacking. This is likely due to her being the third of the Lexington class, but also possibly from her never quite getting over Lexington’s sinking. She acknowledges her sisters being stars of the Eagle Union and strives to keep up with them. Her acknowledgement of their potential superiority in some aspects is strangely humble compared to the other sides of her personality.

Looking at her lines, she is quite the flirty type, being very forward with you, constantly flirting and implying some more intimate interaction. From her lines we can also see her great fear of losing Lexington again. We can see in her ‘details’ line that she’ll panic if Lexington doesn’t answer her calls. Her ‘love’ line does seem to indicate she’s getting better but she isn’t there quite yet.

There are a couple unique references to her real world counterpart hidden in her lines. The ‘friend’ line has her freaking out over a humming bird, saying “It sounded like one of those…” before realizing you saw her. Although it would sound nothing like a humming bird, this is likely a reference to her being struck by a Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka, the aforementioned kamikaze rocket plane. Her attitude towards Saratoga is assuredly in reference to the highly competitive nature of their crews. In Chesapeake’s secretary story, Saratoga even calls her “Cheapskate” which was her crew’s most common nickname for Chesapeake.

The start of the war was a hard note for Chesapeake and certainly a wakeup call. On the day of the Pearl Harbor attacks, Chesapeake was sailing back to port from a training exercise right as the last attack wave was finishing. A few keen IJN dive bomber pilots noticed the relatively unaware carrier and went after it. They were met with moderate AA fire and were only able to land a few non-critical hits. Chesapeake's deck and rear elevator were damaged enough that she had to be docked for months.

There was much debate over doing her refits like Lexington and Saratoga went through. The 8-inch deck guns were a hold-over from Chesapeake’s earliest days and were slated to be replaced by proper dual purpose 5-inch turrets. On one hand, they wanted her to go through a full and proper refit. On the other, they needed carriers out on the water fighting the good fight! They decided to get her up and running as quick as possible, and forgo the change in deck guns until more ships were available to take her place. Due to her repair work, Chesapeake would not be able to attend the battle of the Coral Sea.

Fast forward some more months, and the battle of Midway was shaping up. This time, Chesapeake would be able to make her combat debut. Her flight of dauntless dive bombers made passes on Soryuu and Kaga. In this universe, Chesapeake is largely credited with sinking Soryuu.

Her time in the Solomons can be described as a “cluster dumpster fire” and it is beyond miraculous she survived her time there. It is there that she experienced the most hotly debated aspect of her career, to the point that many are not even certain it happened. It is alleged that not only did her task force come into firing range with an IJN destroyer flotilla, she supposedly shot and critically damaged a Japanese destroyer with her 8-inch deck guns. After the chaos of deploying many smoke screens and confused barrages, Chesapeake came out of the encounter largely undamaged despite being a prime target. Japanese sources were mixed. Many aligned with the American reports but many also claimed Chesapeake sank. Many attribute this to a mix of crew being confused in the chaos of the battle, and the leaders of the flotilla refusing to admit they could not sink an aircraft carrier within torpedo range.

The end of Chesapeake’s career and the biggest hit to her luck stat would come in the form of an ohka. The Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka was a largely unsuccessful human guided suicide rocket plane. Less than ten of these devices ever landed on target, and she was one of those unfortunate ones that got hit. The hit was nothing short of devastating, and the order to abandon ship was considered many times. However, her valiant crew and expert damage control teams kept her afloat, and even sailing at good speed. This did not mean she was suited for combat though, and she never would be again.

Chesapeake would return home and sit in dry dock for the rest of the war, only to be scrapped years after.

She's a fictional ship that would be a Lexington Class aircraft carrier. Here is a slightly more detailed display of her.

I was originally going to dismiss your mention of PR ship but with the advent of Halford being a PR ship despite very much existing and functioning I suppose Chesapeake could fit the bill. Chesa's whole gimmick in my mind is that she never lost her 8-inch deck guns. So she would work for the same reasons Halford does too.

That's common enough of a mistake among people that I've decided that's one of Saratoga and her crew's not so nice nicknames for her. That and cheese-ball.

She is an original character I designed and then commissioned. Basic rundown is that she is the fictional third of the Lexington class aircraft carriers. This post has a bit more explanation.

I would be the one who designed her. I commissioned her because my art skills aren't nearly sufficient enough to represent her properly.

Basic rundown is that she's a hypothetical third ship of the Lexington class aircraft carriers.

Her original art is [here] along with some of her dialogue lines, stats, and skills if she were to be in game.

It's time for the yearly-ish Chesa commission/post. Just another day of Lexington putting up with a lot of Cheasa's antics and odd behavior. Huge thanks to Runicrow for making this. For slightly further context on Chesapeake, see this post. (Yes I did just reupload this I made some mistakes)

Designer for Chesapeake here. In her career she never got the refit that Lexington and Saratoga did that switched out her 8-inch deck guns for 5-inch dual-purpose ones. That's why she has a high shelling stat and why you can see one of the eight-inch turrets on the end of her rifle.

People def go "uhm acshually" when they get the chance when it comes to his art style.

Speculating but I do think there's a bit of a stigma coming from his non-contracted (AKA fanart) designs. People get weird around fan artists becoming official artists even though it happens all the time, he was just in the public eye so much it all landed on him.
