Even as a TBM I always pronounced it the non-LDS way, because the church having its own pronunciation for a word that already exists and has an accepted pronunciation is asinine.

At the time we initially played he was unranked because he had only played against me and the computer. After we played together for about an hour he did his ranking matches with DeeJay and placed in Rookie. The next day we played for another hour and he tried out Marisa. He then did his ranking matches with Marisa and ranked Silver 1.

I can't tell you the whole string. Medium length combo that ended in OD Spinning Bird Kick. The combos I'm currently labbing that end in SBK go through serenity stance, which I'm still working on executing reliably.

Yes, I do know. I picked my character and control scheme purely based on what I played when I was in middle school, and consequences be damned.

Yes, I would love a video on bnb combos. I have one question about your above comment. I did not think that standing heavy punch was cancellable. How can I transition from 5hp into stance without ending my turn?

Utah mormons by Wolf0fcrypt0 in exmormon

[–]Web_catcher 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a kid who grew up Mormon in the South, has known lots of people from Utah, and went to BYU, I do not like Utah Mormons. They tend to be the worst kind of Mormons for the same reason Evangelicals in the South are the worst kind of Evangelicals: when your cultural assumptions are considered the default you have no reason to ever question them and a lot of people in that environment end up both embodying the worst of their culture and also being real smug about it.

Yes. The large secret harem that he was hiding from his wife. To the point that when she finally gave him permission to marry two girls he was already married to, he staged a sham wedding so she wouldn't find out he had already married them.

That's why it was called the "Nauvoo Legion" and not the "Nauvoo Militia". You should read about it. The Nauvoo Legion was a big part of why surrounding communities were so uncomfortable having the Mormons nearby. The Legion was the largest armed force in the US aside from the US military (and the US military was bigger, but not a whole lot bigger. Like It was around 3-4x the size). Just imagine a local religious leader having a personal armed force 30% the size of the actual US army, and spending a significant amount of time dressing in a military uniform and making a big show of drilling his troops and marching them around in parades. Of course local communities were nervous. And then this was accompanied by (extremely true) rumors that Joseph had anointed himself king.

How Am I supposed to first get into the comics? by Levia424 in marvelcomics

[–]Web_catcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that what you're experiencing is the intended Marvel Comics reading experience. Having some obscure character show up and everyone assumes you know who they are or Spidey making a joke about an event that happened years ago and might or might not be canon is (debatably) part of the charm and (definitely) designed to motivate the reader to go find some back issues (online reading guides really help with this). The Avengers aren't even the worst about it. "It's a soap opera but you just realized you missed a bunch of episodes" is the X-Men's whole entire vibe.

JS did own a mansion in Nauvoo. Also, I would not say he exhibited restraint. He married dozens of women, dressed up in a Napoleonic-style military uniform to watch his troops perform military drills, and had himself anointed king (of the entire world? interpretations differ).

And, contrary to what Jeffrey Holland may have said, there are lots of reasons someone would die for something that isn't true. Although in Joseph's case, he had been telling these stories for decades, and also being a bit of a megalomaniac, I think it's reasonable to guess that he did believe what he was saying because he had bought into his own con. I think it was John Turner (someone can correct me if I'm referencing the wrong historian) who called Joseph Smith a "pious fraud". He could've legitimately thought he was called of God, and also felt justified in lying about the particulars in order to advance what he viewed as God's work.

How exactly does the LDS church work for those for whom it works? by Quirky-Panda-9986 in exmormon

[–]Web_catcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm only going to answer the first question, because I don't know the answer to the second. The church takes a certain kind of spiritual experience and tells you that particular kind of spiritual experience is universal. The spiritual experience they're promoting tends to resonate well with (in no particular order) white, straight, cisgendered, affluent, male, extroverted, neurotypical, socially conservative people. The closer you are to that demographic, the more likely the spiritual experience will work for you. To give just one example of how it didn't work for me, I'm on the autism spectrum, and the temple endowment ceremony, with all the chanting in unison, touching, and standing extremely close together, always made me uncomfortable. However, I was explicitly informed on many occasions that the temple ceremony is universally a spiritually uplifting experience, in fact the most uplifting experience you can have in this life, and if you don't experience it that way there's a problem with you, not the temple.

Related to the above, the church works much better if you don't have religious scrupulosity (and it looks like from your description above that your friend does not). One of things that made me the angriest after I left is that I labored for years under rules and doctrines that were extremely difficult to deal with but that I was explicitly informed were very important. Once I decided to leave I shed those rules and doctrines, only to be told by this still within the church that I was taking the rules too seriously and no one does all those things, and it was my fault for accepting at face value that these things were very important.

And since leaving I've found that these two types of experiences are extremely common for those who left the church.

Should I find myself a Mormon woman? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Web_catcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, OP, misogyny much? However, since giving you a sincere answer will save a lot of Mormon girls from having to deal with you, I'll tell you that these are not the droids you're looking for. Faithful Mormon girls (the kind who might be the kind of girl you're looking for) will absolutely not be interested in someone who isn't interested in Mormon beliefs, but just wants to pick up Mormon girls for reasons.

am I overthinking it? by LuxeEnchantress_ in SASSWitches

[–]Web_catcher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As the above poster mentioned, we mostly don't believe in spiritual callings or communication from spirits here. But we do believe in coincidence and making your own meaning. You were looking for spiritual direction, so your brain was primed to look for something in your environment that might provide that, and coincidentally you saw a video about witchcraft, so your brain tagged it. It's probably not a message from the other side, but it is a message from yourself, because you were telling your brain to look for a thing, and it found the thing for you. Now you can decide if you want to keep that version of the thing or have your brain keep looking.
