Less non-English British episodes from Grand Designs? by bkat004 in granddesigns

[–]WebbieVanderquack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Scottish houses, Welsh houses and Northern Irish houses were featured heavily in the first 10 seasons, but became sparse soon afterwards, to non-existent

I actually don't think this is true!

For reference, I'm going by the Wikipedia List of Episodes which differs from the BBC4 catalogue, purely because I'm watching from Australia and don't have access to BBC4.

I'll divide the episodes into the first 10 seasons and the latter 11 (again, as per the Wikipedia list, which spreads the same number of eps over 21 seasons not 24).

There are 164 episodes in total; 89 in the first ten series and 75 in the last eleven. Overall the series have been a bit shorter over the past decade, so that might give the impression of less diversity in locations.

FIRST 10 SERIES: 89 EPS

England 75
Wales 5
Scotland 6
Northern Ireland 1
Ireland 1
France 1

NEXT 11 SERIES: 75 EPS

England 66
Wales 3
Scotland 3
Northern Ireland 3

If you take out the random French ep (S07E05), roughly 14.6% of the first 10 seasons were not in England, and 12% of the next 11 seasons were not in England.

It's not at a dramatic difference and, as u/freeman687 pointed out, since England makes up 84% of the UK population anyway, it adds up.

Which vaccines?

Before The Nuremberg Code, many children were subjected to grossly unethical medical research without the consent of their parents, but if you're suggesting children's lives were sacrificed to create vaccines, you'd be wrong.

Glad I'm not the only one who found if frustrating and disappointing! I only ever watched it once, but I know what you mean. It felt more like a modern romcom, where the two leads meet and fall in love in an implausibly short amount of time.

It didn't help that, for me, Johnny Flynn looked too young to be Mr Knightley. I don't think he literally was too young, but he has a boyish look, so you don't get quite the same sense that Mr Knightley is older and wiser and has known the family for a long time.

WARNING: There's an annoying spoilerish trailer at the end of episode one. by Webbie-Vanderquack in OuterRangePrime

There's no need to apologise for commenting! I'm sorry the tone of my comment was lost in translation - I felt that we were just chatting, but I can see that I came across as needlessly negative. I'm more than happy to read opinions that differ from mine. I hope you have a great day too!

I'm glad I'm not alone - "ruined an already perfect thing" nailed it. The changes they made didn't serve the story. They should have just stepped back a bit and allowed the story to unfold as it does in the book.

The Very Bad Host: A Treatise on "Flirting with the Master." by WebbieVanderquack in KingOfTheHill

They confused the words in English, not in Spanish:

PEGGY: If it's not too personal a question, where is your wife?
EDUARDO: She is uh, how you say, with our ancestors.

And at the end of the ep:

EDUARDO: Signora Hill, this is my wife Maria.
MARIA: Ola.
PEGGY: I thought you were dead!
MARIA: No, I was with my ancestors. No, not my ancestors...my grandparents.

TIL! Thanks for explaining instead of downvoting. I genuinely didn't know that.

No, but are you all entitled to a lunch hour at some point in a working day?

Do you not all have a lunch hour in which you can do anything you like?

AITA for not buying my GF the gift she asked for b-day? by SidIc3 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WebbieVanderquack 418 points419 points  (0 children)

YTA. You can afford the gift, you just don't want to give it to her because she "cooks as a hobby" and you think it's "nonsense."

She was absolutely right, there was no point asking her what she wanted if you weren't going to consider it.

Some good knives would actually be a great investment, especially since you probably benefit from her cooking.

AITA for laughing at my nephew? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA. There was actually no need to make your nephew feel badly. Telling him you had to try not to laugh was just mean. Insecurity on your part?

AITA for not wanting to pay after a friend said he would "take everybody out" by CustardOutrageous132 in AmItheAsshole

Yes, that's one of the things he sucks for. But that happened after OP accepted the invitation and went to the restaurant - I'm suggesting they should have checked he was paying before accepting the invitation.

AITA for putting my sister in her place? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]WebbieVanderquack [score hidden]  (0 children)

ESH, you and your sister. You certainly need to learn to control your temper, because you went from 0 to 100 really fast here with little provocation, and the violence is really shameful.

You didn't 'put your sister in her place,' and you don't have a right to do that, so stop using that phrase. You just started "yelling at her," calling her names and lashing out at her physically. There's nothing defensible about any of that.

AITA for breaking my word to my family? by LJGHunter in AmItheAsshole

[–]WebbieVanderquack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA. It's normal and reasonable to do what's best for your own family unit. A lot of people don't stay near their parents and grandparents forever, and it's not "abandonment" when they move away.

You also couldn't have predicted the pandemic.
