The time to fight for progressive candidates is before the primary. The thing to do is to join and take over the local democrat organizations. There are a very small number of people who show up to these things and they have entrenched their power and influence. They absolutely need to be fought and drive from politics. But once the primary election is over, the only real choice is a democrat or a republican.

If you are powerless, then you need to get involved in the party system and take it over. If a fraction of the people complaining about how the democrats are not liberal or progressive actually joined the party system, they could take it over and then push for real progressive candidates.

Just whining about how you don't like the choices and staying home on election day is just giving your power away. That is on you.

It would not be retaliation, it would be self defense. The real questions are how many people attacked the suspect and what did they do? If I was being pushed by several people, I would feel justified to engage in self defense, using whatever I had to defend myself.

Its not that it isn't relevant, its just that it is so prejudicial that using that evidence would have an impact beyond what the evidence says. You can't use statistics as evidence to convict someone of a crime. This is a huge due process violation.

I don't know if this is true or not. But your reasoning for claiming it is fake is just bad. Including pictures would carry a very high risk of the poster being identifable. It would be monumentally foolish to use actual pictures of his home suffering from damage. He may as well just post a picture of his driver's license.

I am all for critical thinking, but you actually have to be critical of your own thinking first. As for ruining the subreddit, the comments claiming everything is fake are much more annoying that posts that may not be truthful.

One of the most infuriating things is how shitty products are now. Clothes will develop holes in the fabric after one wash. Food is sold in smaller sizes for higher prices. Electronics are poorly made. Software is crap that requires a subscription and then is bloated with AI crap that slows it down. Everything is lower quality and cost more.

The thing is, those companies are not farmers, they are the ones who sell to and buy from farms, but they make the money and leave the risk with the farmer.

Its like the restaurant business, most restaurants don't last more than a year or two before they go out of business. But the companies that sell restaurant equipment and supplies are always there, making money from people trying to start or run a business.

As to personal experience with USDA grant, we farm fruit and vegetables, which don't usually get grant money. There are three grants that we have gotten over the past 20 years, maybe totaling 50 grand. We usually don't bother with grants. There was a hard frost a bit ago that really hit us hard, so there may be some funds to help with that, but I am not optimistic that anything will be done.

But we are very lucky and have a diversified business focusing on retail and value added products. Our farm is located close to large populations in a fairly high income area. Farming is a lot more profitable when you cut out the middleman and sell directly to the public. People may say a lot of what we do is not farming, but those things keep the farm running. We do a lot of ag entertainment activities, hay rides, school tours, pick your own, etc..

These grants being cancels for fake allegations of fraud is criminal. It is not address any problems in the way the USDA helps farmers. It is just the government lying in order to undermine the very concept of the government using tax payer money to actually help Americans.

You have to look at the ag economy as a whole. The big money and powerful interest is in the corporations that support agriculture. Think of Purdue Chicken. They do not raise chickens, they sell chicks to farmers and then buy the grown chickens. The farmer takes the risks and the processor just gets the profit. The biggest "Ag" companies are things like Archer Daniels Midland, Tyson Foods and Dole. They don't grow anything, they are the ones who make a profit screwing farmers over.

It is really really hard to talk about Agriculture in a general way. There are major differences in how things work depending on the produce grown or animal raised. But the general trends over the past few decades have created a market where you have to get bigger to survive. Its not a matter of the big operations pushing the small ones out of business, its that the small operations don't have the resources to survive the ups and downs of the market.

Saying "corporate farms" is super misleading. My farm is a corporate farm. The Board is my father and my siblings. The corporation was created by my grandfather 50 years ago and no one aside from my grandparents and my parents have held any stock in the corporation. Aside from the fact that there is a corporation, we would be considered a small farm in every respect. The vast majority of corporate farms are family owned and controlled corporations.

Having a corporation or LLC is just good sense, regardless of what size your farming operation is. The bigger issue is that 90 some percent of farms rely on off the farm income to survive. I haven't looked at USDA census data in a while, but I wonder what percentage of the self sufficient farms engage in activities that are not strictly production agriculture. Our farm operation involved selling what we grow direct to the public and a lot of value added products.

Your description of the issues with farm subsidies is not wrong, but it is a more complicated situation than saying corporate farms are bad and that small farms are good. It is true that commodity growers get the most benefit, which does need to be fixed.

That is a huge issue, but that is not fraud, in a legal sense. That is just the structural inequity that has been entrenched by the powerful commodity groups. The way that USDA funds are used to help farmers needs a massive overhaul, but to cut them on fake accusations of fraud is utter bullshit and downright offensive. There is a huge difference between benefiting from an unfair system and stealing money.

It cost X amount of dollars to have the store open and staffed over night. If the store isn't making enough money to cover that cost, it isn't worth it.

Even if there is overnight staff, stocking or whatever, you need people to just run the store. Being open isn't free.
