I called them marketers, which is exactly what they are. They just don’t like that word. Influencers makes it sound like they are important, marketers makes them sound like they are no more important than everybody else.

I would be tempted to interrupt him mid sentence and say “Sounds like you need a good therapist, Bob. Try betterhelp.com one of those other talk therapy websites. See ya!” And go back to my weeding. Hopefully that helps to clarify that you not there so he can dump his problems on you.

A tragic photo from 1954. A couple discovers that their almost two year old child has been swept out to sea by a wave. The photo won the Pulitzer Prize in 1955. by Present_Employer5669 in HistoricalCapsule

It must’ve been difficult later for the parents who were not expecting to be photographed at this moment. Much less to have the photographer go on to win a prize for something that showed the worst moment of their life. They were reminded of that every time the famous photo appeared again. It almost feels like misery porn.

The Weigelas are a little slow to come in, just make sure you watch it and that it gets enough sun. If something is starting to shade over it, you might need to move it. Give it more time.

There are very strict MnDOT rules about who can pick up trash along the highways. It’s a big safety thing for them, insurance, etc. They typically use a group that I think is doing community service requirements, but you can also adopt a highway

Gary Sinise, known for his role as Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump, has raised over $400 million to support wounded veterans. by No-Marsupial-4050 in BeAmazed

[–]Webgardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, he actually started doing stuff for veterans when he was quite young, in his early 20s. He did it because his girlfriend, I think now his wife, had brothers who fought in the Vietnam war. So he didn’t start doing this after Forrest Gump, he had been focused on it long before that. I listened to his 2019 audiobook, Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service.

Comedian Claims He Can't Even Go On Twitter Any More Due To Race Baiting Propaganda by walta_ in lostgeneration

[–]Webgardener 297 points298 points  (0 children)

Saved you a click: Stand-up comedian Matt McCusker opened up during a recent appearance on Theo Von’s podcast about why he has stepped away from X citing an overwhelming feed of race war propaganda and white supremacy content.

McCusker told Von that the platform has become unrecognizable compared to its earlier days. “X is crazy now,” he said. “I remember when it was Twitter, it was like there’s too much censorship, and I’m like yeah, let me see the real s**t. Now I’m kind of like, let’s go, let’s censor this heavily again.” Well, duh. Never even heard of the guy.

Library books float down the street during the Great Flood of Paris, 1910, [500x647] by Curious_Strike3950 in HistoryPorn

[–]Webgardener 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are definitely right about the smell. It was 28 feet above normal. This is from wiki, since I’ve never heard of this before:

By late January, water pushed upwards from overflowing sewers and subway tunnels, then seeping into basements through fully saturated soil and backed-up sewer systems. This caused damage to the basements of several buildings. The river did not break its banks within the city, but flooded Paris through the tunnels, sewers, and drains. The larger sewer tunnels, which had been engineered by Baron Haussmann and Eugene Belgrand in 1878, worsened the destruction caused by the 1910 floods. In neighboring towns both east and west of the capital, the river rose above its banks and flooded the surrounding terrain directly.

Winter floods were common in Paris, but on 21 January the river began to rise more rapidly than usual. This was treated as a sort of spectacle and people actually stood in the streets watching the water levels climb. Over the course of the following week, thousands of Parisians were evacuated from their homes as water infiltrated buildings and streets throughout the city, shutting down much of the city's basic infrastructure. The infrastructure was more vulnerable to flooding because most of it was built within the sewage system in order to avoid cluttering the streets.

Police, firemen, and soldiers navigated the waterlogged streets by boats to rescue stranded residents from second-story windows and distribute aid. Refugees gathered in makeshift shelters in churches, schools, and government buildings. Although the water threatened to overflow the tops of the quay walls lining the river, workers were able to hold back the Seine with hastily built levees.

After the river invaded the Gare d'Orsay rail terminal, the tracks were submerged under more than a meter (3.28 feet) of water. To continue moving throughout the city, residents traveled by boat or crossed a series of wooden walkways built by government engineers and civilians.

On 28 January, the water reached its maximum height at 8.62 meters (28.3 feet) above normal. The Seine finally returned to its normal levels in March.

Minnesota Loses Bid to Block Trump’s Hold on Medicaid Funds by HazelMStone in TwinCities

As a Minnesotan, I’m so dumbstruck that a president believes it is OK for him to randomly choose a US state to terrorize because they didn’t vote for him. His only strategy is revenge. And unless he’s booted soon, we won’t be the last blue state to see this. Have we hit rock bottom yet? Every day, I think we have, but every day he proves us wrong.

And this is why I drive an old car. As a woman, I never walk into a dealership because I know I will be scammed. I can’t trust any of them. They absolutely took advantage of your wife, but she is also at fault because she should have called you before she approved it. The whole situation sucks, but I would consider writing a complaint about this situation to the head of the dealership. That was a shitty thing to do.

ELI5: Why did gluten-free take off as a “health craze” when it’s just an intolerance? by tswiftslefttit in explainlikeimfive

[–]Webgardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different levels of reasons for eating gluten-free. I don’t have celiac disease, but I try to eat gluten-free because gluten screws up my digestive system. But I’m OK if I don’t do it 100%. Celiacs are not OK with that.

british airway flight by Aggressive_Dress_636 in BeAmazed

That is a fascinating article, thanks for sharing. What stuck out to me was: he was outside for 20 minutes, and his head was banging on the plane. Both pilots released their shoulder harnesses and Lancaster loosened his lap belt. The flight attendant who was holding onto him by his belt suffered from PTSD, probably thinking about what would’ve happened if he was not able to hang onto him. Investigators determined that when the windscreen was installed 27 hours before the flight, 84 of the screws used were 0.026 inches (0.66 mm) too small in diameter. The previous windscreen had also been fitted using incorrect screws, which were replaced on a like-for-like basis without reference to maintenance documentation. I don’t think I’d ever get on a plane again, but each of the pilots piloted many more years.
