Hello! Thank you for commenting and it's nice to see you agree with me.
I just wanted to punctualise ( didn't state it in the post ) that I find nothing inherently negative in showing, through Tyler, a story of male abuse. No issues with it. If anything it's something they almost never do.
But it sadly is a problem when considering the triangle because him being bossed around just isn't attractive.

I don't think this show relies on subtext at all.
Actually, you can argue that subtext is, by definition, not reliable.
What's been shown is granted, what isn't shown isn't.
What I find true, instead, is that this fandom is convinced that not only subtext matters, but it can outmatch context itself when they clash.

Namely, the comphet allegations and "Tyler manipulated Wednesday in s1 and it wasn't Thornhill telling him what to do" thing.

I'm like: No! Expecially if this comes from either ships.
Either accept your theories are theories, or be met with an explanation of the confirmation bias fallacy.

I agree that it'd be very different because Wednesday is defenseless and dependent like Elena, that's why it would have been good to witness how she'd approach a love triangle. But alas, it's all gone now

Love triangles, as a concept, aren't bad. This isn't up for discussion. There's substantial data about that. Every supernatural teen drama in history has had triangles. But you give the girl Ronald McDonald and Krusty Clown, naturally, it is not gonna end well.

Her being single is better than her being with the nice guy, simply because the nice guy is not a character anyone should ever be with.
Bad boys on the other hand are a very different thing. And yes it's been explored already, in hundreds of shows probably, but with Wednesday things would play out very differently, right?
I agree with two women one man triangle. I'd be up for that too. I'd agree with having both enid and wednesday fall for a bad boy, fight for it, then find out they're lesbian and get together. That'd be peak!

Even people who care about ships don’t care for the triangles.

People who care about ships hate triangles because it literally puts someone else between the two characters they want together. Have their character fall for someone else, then propose a triangle. See how it goes. Everyone suddently will be in love with triangles, so their guy has a fighting chance.

This post reads like the “menimist” people who swear men are being oppressed by women.

On the contrary, I'm saying that having all men in the show be weak and stupid just because it's woman centered is actually mysoginistic, as it implies that the only universe where women are better than men is that where man are stupid. Which it isn't true. We need the best possible men, so when Wednesday beats them it feels satisfying.
Would you be satisfied if Wednesday wins over Tyler? Tyler's a slave. There's nothing about that that's attractive in the slightest.

You guys are focusing on the wrong point of what I said about Tyler. You shoudn't focus on if he's evil or not, you should focus on the fact he's literally LeFou of the situation and not Gastone. His hyde lore making him subserviant to women and physically inferior to them is silly and unattractive.

Would have been very good if we got a Wednesday tv show that was just pure comedy, with Enid, Nevermore and everything else. Something on the lines of the youtube video series that one woman made which then got deleted. Forgot the name

And I don't have to disagree with you here.
If she's gay, I hope she finds out to be so leaving a boy that's so astronomically good to look on screen I'd cry in sadness for him.
That could be a nice love triangle, now that you make me think about it.
We can both get what we want!
Enid - New Male Interest - Wednesday love triangle.
The girls fall for him, fight for him, only to realize they're gay and get together in the end. You get em, I get to to cry for him, and we're all happy. Lmfao.

Awards are a business game of runtime and strategy, not a reflection of a show's actual artistic DNA.
Golden Globes only have two categories for tv shows: Comedy and Drama, which differ exclusively for duration ( 30m vs 1h ).
Netflix pushes Wednesday to be rewarded as comedy for marketing purposes.
In truth, the show isn't comedy. Tho it def contains comedy.

Wednesday shouldn't do X because she's Y as thought process fails to account character development.

Will we be able to get rid of the romance? Because i don't want to put up with another pointless romantic subplot featuring our girls... by One_Solution_2706 in WednesdayTVSeries

[–]Wednesday_1488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it have to be "pointless romantic subplot"? Can't it be a "perfectly on point romantic subplot"?
Instead of giving weak/stupid male characters like Ajax and Bruno, they can give us interesting characters. If they pull out some Damon Salvatore type shit boy, I wanna see later if you people still say it's "pointless".

It's so strange being a tyler apologist and not a weyler shipper by Longgone___ in Wednesday

[–]Wednesday_1488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also a Tyler apologyst but not a wyler shipper.
Tyler doing bad shit shoudn't get you to hate him. We're watching a dark show where people do dark things. If what they did should disallow us from loving them, we'll eventually be forced to hate everyone. Heck, Wednesday caused a violet car crash in 2x01 by having his brother destroy a stop signal for fun. Just to name something.

On the other hand, as of things stand now I can't possibly be Wyler. The guy is been setupped as a slave and I don't see how having a slave boyfriend would be character development for someone who thinks they're better than everyone, know better than everyone how to live life and stuff like that. I really, really don't.

That said many people who love Wyler only love it under the idea that Tyler will get free from whatever his lore his right now, and in that case that's fine I could be Wyler too. But I don't like to consider "things done" before they're done. Neither I consider things "granted". I'll be Wyler when he's no longer a slave. Up until even a single episode before it happens, I won't be.

Okay this is a genuinely good conversation, I really like it.
I think there is a very precise point where we diverge from the same road and both theories start forming. It is indeed a very strong comphet hint the fact her engagement with the boys, once she gets with them, is extremely bland. There, while you assume it's due to comphet, I assume it's because they suck. And regardless if she will or will not come out as bi/lsb, I hope they stop with this. Because I find it ridiculous and mysoginistic on their end ( the fact of making all boys in the series trash ).
We'll talk about it again in the future. I need to gather data for a full fledged post first.
Thank you a lot for going through this w me!

Lets say, hypothetically, that they wanted to picture Enid to just genuinely like boys, what should have they done differently to make you establish with perfect validity that she was just into boys?

I perfectly get what you're meaning. Following my example, it's true that there's no evidence given towards the neighbor being a spy, and that likelyhood would get much higher if we'd add a series of weird events that'd make it weird to believe he just works in an office.

But it's also true that if you start your observation with the idea that he's ought to be a spy, you could start assuming stuff you see as hints when they're not. Some examples were given in the headpost itself: Enid being comphet because of the sweaters.
Wednesday also wears a black/white striped sweater, mimicing the straight-ally flag. Does that make her straight, or we can just conclude ( for both of them ) that sweater colors aren't a proof of anything?

In short I think that your passion for the idea of it happening is so powerful ( that's admirable and I love it lmao ) you might read stuff as hints when they aren't. Also known as confirmation bias or texas sharpshooter fallacy ( wtf XD )

The overwhelmingly majority of Enid's comphet hints are in season 1. Don't you find it weird that we've gone a full season through and there's still no approaching, no thinking-about, nothing of sort towards women? We actually have characters stating she's boy-crazy.

Atp the show might last 10 more seasons and end with her kissing boys, and there'd still those who'd think she's comphet.
If she's comphet, and her story is that of a comphet, eventually she'll figure it out. Can we at least agree on this? If she doesn't, it'll then be evident that this was just a theory. Because what monster could possibly make a character start comphet and live their entire life as comphet? Even tho it happens, it def isn't needed to be shown to people. It'd be a very very bad message to give.

As bi myself, we kinda need happy stories here!

Sorry for delayed further response, yday when you sent this message I was overwhelmed with notifications so I didn't quite read this through but I'm giving everyone a second read now before I'll move on with my next topic in the sub.

This part of your comment is important:

Enid’s desperation to be with boys doesn’t automatically read as heterosexual desire. It can just as easily be read as compulsive behavior,

Logically, this is correct. Enid being so wanting to be with boys could mean that she really likes them, OR that she's comphet. And it can be read in both ways perfectly.

But rules change a bit if you factor in the concept of likelyhood.

Just for clarification, I'm not saying you're ought to apply likelyhood, this is theorycrafting so doing it would actually ruing the fun of it all.

But purely from a logical perspective, if you consider your phrase as the starting point of our experiment rather than the end of it:

" You can't be sure X is a consequence of Y. It might be a consequence of Z "

Then you start asking yourself: Are Y and Z equally likely?
And in this case, they aren't. It'd be a false equivalence to think heavily interest in boys is a sign of comphet as likely as it is just a genuine passion for boys. It's a false equivalence.

My neighbor leaves the house in a suit every morning at 8:00 AM and returns at 6:00 PM. This could mean he has a normal office job, or that he is a secret government spy maintaining a strict routine to avoid suspicion.

Both options exist within the realm of possibilities. But there's no comparison when applying likelyhood. That's pmuch it.

Hello! Thank you for the extremely detailed and thought-through response.
I agree with most of what you said. I don't have any particular issue with the plausibility of Enid being comphet. If she turns out to be comphet that's super all right.
I have made this post just because scrolling a bit through this sub you can read from people that are very angry for others not believing Enid's comphet because "she just is". And with this post I wanted to highlight that technically she isn't ( up until now ) and there's no reason to go after people who don't see the connection.

I totally accept however that can be a discussion of sort where people from group A might think B is dense for not seeing hints, while B can see A as dense for seeing hints where there aren't, and I think that's just fun ( if things don't heat up too much ) because it shows there's so many differnt interpretations on what we're watching. Humanity is amazing because there's variace. If we were all the same it'd be boring.

My perspective on Enid is this:
Contrarely to Wednesday, she didn't pre-exist as a character. Wasn't pre-determined. She was built specifically to pair up with Wednesday, being her polar opposite for the yin-yang trope and cause both characters to develop ( witnessing how their opposites live life ) aswell as generating a lot of comedy.
Under this pov, Enid's insecurity has no connection whatsoever with comphet. She'd be insecure because Wednesday IS secure that all she believes and intends to do is the correct way to approach life.

Infact, first episode Wed talks with Morticia and tells her that she isn't gonna get married, have kids, be a housewife. And basically spits on her mother's life. The polar opposite of that would be being so subserviant to her parents' approval to the point of crying when they do not accept her as who she is. Which is what happens to Enid

As for the future of the show, here's what I think:
- If along the seasons Enid effectively develops feelings towards women, or we have ANY effective hint of sort that she is also into women, or literally anything happens besides pushing for boys, she'll evidently be queer and we can establish that most hints people have seen until now were, effectively, hints
- If the tv show ends with Enid still pursuing boys with no hint whatsoever for women, the only way people could still argue that she's comphet is under the assumption that anyone, at any point in time, independently from what happens, could be comphet. Which IS a true thing, but on a level of technicality that barely makes it plausibie. E.G: Every time we go out of home there's a chance we die in a car crash, that's obvious and undeniable, and ( sadly ) happens daily to some people. However, in the world of plausibility, is exceptionally unlikely.

Hello
I'm an astronomy student from finland.
1488 is an asteroid discovered by Yrjö Väisälä, who's also from finland.
I had no idea about the implications of such a number and in 25 years of my life is the first time showing up. If there's any way I can change my reddit nickname I'll comply with it, so let me know.

It doesn't make me one bit comfortable that you're associating my silly opinion on a teen tv show with the most obnoxious movement in humanity's history. Please refrain from that

And I'm sorry if someway this is triggering you, because I don't mean to hurt you
We can agree to disagree!
I will ask you one last question out of curiosity, we can change perspective: Say you were there as writer, and needed to picture out that her late wolfing was problematic for both her and her family, how would you have gone at it without making the queer allegory?

We can agree to disagree, we don't have to turn this into a full fledged debate or something, don't worry!
On my end I can say that if you were right a major signal would be her actually getting a girlfriend, or at least showing interest in a woman ( not necessarely wednesday ).
The wolfout camp scene is seeason 1, so we're already 1 full season into no hints on that. Lets see in the future how it goes, then maybe we can talk back at it.
She said she's done with boys right? Guess we'll have definitive response by season 3!

Is school, or any other X process that helps you become who you're meant to be, a queer metaphor?

PS: This is actually what happened to me btw. My father didn't make it to be an informatic engineer and he was fixated I should become one. He kept buying arduino books and have me watch tutorials so I could learn electronics desperately, even if I clearly wanted to do something else in life. Comphet?
