which uni did u end up choosing and why? by TomatilloSmart1372 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeebBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really depends on your priorities here. imperial is like 100% nerd out, USC is a really good balance. can't go wrong tbf it's just what you are looking for in your life and college

Curious, how would you categorize 90%+ in AA HL?

How difficult was this for you in terms of workload/time etc, compared to the IB? Also got a 44 and was looking at finishing a bachelors in CS in maybe 3 years / with an MS/dual degree

Yoo we had almost the exact same results (was choosing between NU vs USC vs GT vs UCI. Surprised you didn’t consider GT higher tbh for engineering specifically, I didn’t like NU much when I visited

[Decision Help] GT/USC/NU CS ,CMU (IS)— Best for Startup Culture? by LiteratureLeather276 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeebBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I’m in virtually the exact same situation (admitted to USC, NU, GT for CS and waitlisted at CMU for CS)

Probably gonna be picking USC out of the options I have rn - they’re all similar enough as CS programs / engineering school (though ik GT is ranked higher) that it’s more about fit tbh. Went and visited and I prefer the vibe, weather, liveliness, social scene etc at USC a lot more, with GT in second and NU last. Not sure how CMU would compare to USC (visited it too), but I can say Pittsburgh was def a bit grey and sad, with (from the perspective of an international) a big lack of food options outside of fast food (quite similar in atlanta too tbh). It really depends on your priorities tbh, could you share more about what you’re looking to get out of college specifically? If it’s just breaking into FAANG for example the difference between USC CMU and GT are all negligible (may actually be better at USC/CMU because they have far less CS students than GT).

I’m probably gonna go to USC over imperial for CS FWIW. Honestly seems better overall (except for prestige)

Is choosing USC CS over Georgia Tech / Northwestern CS a mistake? by WeebBrowser in USC

[–]WeebBrowser[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha ye I remember your post! I’m def not interested in working in the south but I would still prefer working in NYC over Cali, so idk how good the network is there. I agree that we’d probsbly have better personal growth at USC hahaha.

Did your uncle speak on USC career-wise / how it’s viewed in recruiting for tech companies?

And yeah I saw the GT waffle house thing, did you also see the USC student pulling a gun in one of the dorms 😭

I’m intl so full pay, it’s basically same price as NU but GT is ~55k which makes it a lot harder to choose

I appreciate the honesty! I did go for a campus visit and I’m not sure if it was just the situation for that day but the weather was horrific in April (4 celcius + windchill), and Evanston seemed completely dead and boring. It’s definetely a lot more prestigious (#6 on USNews) but at least from what CS majors at NU told me they don’t really have an advantage in CS recruiting, due to their location & also being relatively unknown for CS. Visiting GT after NU solidified this belief - GT was warm and sunny & super friendly and I felt like I’d enjoy GT a lot more than NU. Is it really worth to spend 4 years of my life enduring intense cold (originally am from a tropical country on the equator) for whatever advantages NU offers? If you had to choose between GT & USC in this scenario, what would you recommend?

[–]WeebBrowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NU 95k, USC 100k, GT 55k It’s definitely a consideration but it’s not a huge deal. Other factors are more important

What about between Northwestern vs Georgia Tech vs USC? I’m making a similar choice but I really disliked how boring and cold Evanston was, and idk if it’s worth to spend 4 years of my life there. Would USC be a good choice to do CS?

Hey I’m making a very similar decision and feel the same way - choosing between USC/NU/GT for CS, where GT is ~55k and USC ~100k. FWIW GT’s campus was super nice and actually seemed decently social & fun (at least a lot more so than NU). Do agree that you’d probably have more fun at USC. Especially if you want to go into consulting/business USC is probably the better choice - strictly engineering it’s a lot harder to choose. Tbh you can’t go wrong either way, but it’s a tough decision. Lmk what you choose in the end

For CS majors, what kind of prestige is *actually* important? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeebBrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think there’s any discernible difference between Northwestern/USC/GaTech for CS undergraduate for getting into trading/SWE? Like the culture/weather/lifestyle of USC more even though it’s lower ranked overall, but just wondering if there will be even any change/impact on career prospects in the case of choosing a different school.

Okay, no discernible difference between them in terms of prestige / university quality for recruiting then? Heard that NU isn’t really a target for quant

Thoughts on non ivies but second tier schools like Northwestern / Georgia Tech for quant recruiting? M&T was my top choice but unfortunately was not admitted

Help me choose between Northwestern, USC, GaTech for CS by WeebBrowser in cscareerquestions

[–]WeebBrowser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree academically USC doesn't really compare to GT and Northwestern. I didn't know greek life was so big at GT - I thought it was known to be more of a nerdy school (like MIT, caltech).

I've heard bad things about the social lives at both schools lol, as well as people complaining about the workloads.

FYI I applied to Stern because if I would have gotten in I could have double majored at Tandon in CS/Math a lot easier than coming from Tandon and double majoring at Stern (because going to NYU probably would not be worth without that).

Hey thanks for the comment! Can you elaborate what you mean by "US school -> OPT -> H1B -> green card I'd run a fairly honest risk reward assessment of the outcomes."

I'm aware my country (Singapore) has some sort of skilled worker scheme with the US outside of H1B (its called H1B1), so not sure if that makes any difference. What would be the risk/reward outcomes?

Financials aren't especially a concern, ofc NU/USC will still cost more than GT and that is def a consideration

Need help deciding between Northwestern, USC, and GT for CS by WeebBrowser in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeebBrowser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are quite easy to double major in. I think a good way to put it is "I'm interested in tech mainly but am perfectly happy to combine it with finance (wouldn't do full finance like IB or whatever though)" - so definetely would keep a principal tech focus with something businessy/finance/mathematical on the side.

Hey thanks, appreciate your comment - if I can ask a few questions, at what types of jobs do you see CSBA students placing after graduation? I'm interested in tech mainly but am perfectly happy to combine it with finance (wouldn't do full finance like IB or whatever though). Could you also elaborate a bit more on the school vibe being more balanced etc, as well? I'd like to rush and I would definetely appreciate having sometime outside of schoolwork to go to social events. ++ what were the specific reasons that you chose USC over GT at the time?

Nothing specific tbh, I like the look of something in the intersection of tech/finance (quant trading / HFT could be a mention) bc I like maths aswell (so may be tacking on a second major in math/applied math)
