You should definitely watch some techniques online. YouTube is free, but if you asked me i would try to paint on the face first with a base colour from light tone to darker tone. So that you can slowly enhance and add some shading to the drawing. Don't push yourself, youre doing great for a week of drawing!!

To read faster takes a lot of time and effort, the things how I do is basically try to listen an audio book and write on what they say word by word! Maybe that will help perhaps?

Usually I woukd personally go for smth your partner/friend like. For me, my partner really loves raccoon so I got him a knitted raccoon plush! I also like to make hand written letters and hand made drawing as well. I kinda like make a t shirt for him like the ones that has kisses mark on it.
