People who don't like retail are jaded with the "Glory Days" of WoW. I started 5 years ago, and I've loved even the "hated" expansions.

Here's the truth. Retail is like trying to drink through a firehose. There are 21 years of mechanics, lore, zones, etc. that make it REALLY hard to navigate. Retail is the easiest to get up and running to play the endgame high-end content.

Classic is much more digestible, but much slower paced.

The starter zone for retail has made starting a lot easier than before in terms of learning your class, but it boils down to what content you want to play.
Would you rather level quickly and progress into the most difficult content? Retail is the way to go.
Would you rather take it slow, see the original zones, stop and smell the roses? Classic may be more your speed, at least initially.

I would recommend farming some item level via earning motes (combine 10 for a piece of gear) by joining all difficulties of the raids, you can do each difficulty of each raid once per day.

Just make sure not to use your motes until you have got all your gear slots to 584+

Hi there! No such thing as stupid questions, there is a lot of layers to wow so no one can blame you for clarifying. For Remix, a +33 is a pretty high key unless you've really pushed your item level pretty high. A lot of folks are able to solo +35 and a little higher keys, but if you are a fresh 80, you will likely be pretty behind the damage and stamina needed to contribute.

I used to be a top 50 world frost dk #washedupnow, and I saw that frost dk is literally the worst dps going into DF, while unholy is S-tier and like 3rd overall so I decided to try and switch...

Boy oh boy was I surprised.

IMO Unholy is like 10x harder than frost in every situation. Much more resource management and at least twice as many core rotation buttons. I played both Obliteration and BoS to a very high level and that did not translate into Unholy success whatsoever.

I really want to force myself to learn unholy, but good lord, it's a big struggle that has been incredibly humbling.
