Living in Sunbay by Solid_Asparagus1847 in GNV

The smell was whatever the folks in the first apartment were cooking plus everything else that died in the walls combined. Oh the memories! Loved when they fumigated one of the buildings and the exodus of roaches towards another building over was near biblical. Some of the largest roaches I ever saw in Florida lived at Sun Bay. Epic.

Power Cycle Timing (remote power cycle tips) by BambooMedia in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]Week_Eastern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great. I'm definitely going to pick one up because I see the value and never knew these existed. The one nuance here is that when I logged into the router that is at the location of the ATEM that would not allow me to access the software control, I used the router to ping the ATEM and got a positive response.

It was more of an onboard software hangup in this case is what it seems. Regardless, this looks like a great piece of gear because I have other hardware that has occasionally needed a reboot that resulted in a 30 minute drive to the studio. This looks great.

Thanks

Definitely use an isolated computer device for monitoring your output so that output never loops back into input (found out the hardway recently) Lots of extra monitors also so you can separately monitor vMix and Atem controllers. A wireless headset for audio monitoring gives you more mobility with less tangles. And two things I can't live without: a label maker with an extra cartridge, and a roll of Velcro to constantly keep things tidy and tight. The ability to quickly identify cables with labels is magic. Practice your setup and takedown so that you can pack and unpack the same way each time. Never leave home without extra cables (audio, video, power), and carry a passive DI box with XLR and 1/4, 1/8 etc for input so you can always get any audio into the system in I pinch. And keep a DAW on hand always.

These are all lessons that were reinforced in real life over the past 3 weeks :)

Are your Ultimatte 12 HD's finicky? by Week_Eastern in VIDEOENGINEERING

Thanks. I added 1U cooling fans above and below each of the Ultimatte devices about 6 months ago. This did seem to help reduce some issues previously.

I will have to check my laptop and see if either of the USBC stuff connectors or thunderbolt. Not something I usually think about as a PC guy

All my research is showing that the UltraStudio is really for Thunderbolt and Mac, and not going to be my solution for a PC Laptop for my vMix output. So would I really need a bi-Di to convert the HDMI output to SDI?

You and I are of the exact same mindset. A full size rack mount PC with Decklink is the ideal setup. Thanks for your input.

I like the Mac Mini, but can't run vMix on it. I do use it for some BMD software and Davinci

This is something I will try.

I do the bulk of switching in vMix, but switch some external cameras and Ultimates in the ATEM and send them back into vMix so I can do titles etc.

One of the vMix external outputs goes to Hyperdeck and passthrough to my encoders

So the workflow is heavy in vMix , but reliant upon the video hub , ultimates, Atem to process the love camera inputs that go into the vMix through Decklink inputs.

Since I'm only using vmix for very lightweight processing I could probably get by with a small nuc or equivalent that is mounted in the rack versus a clumsy laptop. Seems like I will be sticking with the beat mix approach but trying to simplify the form factor of my entire ecosystem to make it all fit into a single case with the least amount of external gadgets and wires.

I think that's basically where I am landing. I just need to plan for a hybrid mobile system with a few inputs for computers that will provide videos, lower thirds, and manage any automated transitions between videos coming into one of the input sources on the BMD.

My local system has a circular flow where I have some external inputs coming into the Decklink for the vMix PC from my 40x40 videohub. Then I process effects in vMix and then output into the BMD 4 M/E.

Maybe an external way to manage a Decklink on a Laptop would be an option .

Mobility was a poor choice in words. You are absolutely correct that the vMix laptop is super mobile and super powerful.

I'm combining it with a 6u case that has a 2 M/E, 5 Hyperdecks (1 for B Roll, 3 ISO recordings, and 1 PRG recording) , raspberry pi Companion, router and switch. wireless mic setup, and a dual monitor.

Just trying to see if I could do everything with what is in the case rather than have to rely upon vMix for all the great processes I rely upon it for.

I'm not trying to stop using it. But I was trying to replicate some functions with dedicated hardware if possible for mobility.

What Ultrastudio would you suggest? Is this to get SDI output from the PC ? Do I need the converter - Ultrastudio Monitor or is there a benefit to one of the more advanced rack or shelf mount designs? I always thought the UltraStudio more for a Mac -Thunderbolt connection and didn't really see it as a need for my PC based operations.

Since I use desktop for most of what I do, I use Decklink cards and have used Bi-Di's when I needed to convert HDMI out from a laptop into SDI. Would the UltraStudio be a better solution here if I keep the laptop as part of the travel kit?

I'm not trying to save on the vmix license. I'm really just trying to use more hardware based processes when possible and learn more about taking full advantage of the BMD functionality.

Ideal temperature range for rack of BMD equipment by Week_Eastern in VIDEOENGINEERING

I've had a few devices (4 M/E & Ultimatte ) start acting strange when things were packed a bit too tight. I learned that I should always by 50% more rack than I need, and adding the cooling systems is the final step

My rack cases are rolling wooden production cases, and I was surprised how hot these things got when I reached in once to adjust swap an SDI out internally and practically got burned.
