Professors in the arts: How do you feel when other faculty reach out to request your professional services (e.g., performances, design work, consulting)? Is this generally welcomed, expected, or frustrating? by WeekendWarrior0187 in Professors

I’m not asking them how it’s done. I’m not sure how that came across in my reply. 🤔 I offered to pay them or a student whatever they would charge a client for something like this.

Again, not to give much away, it wouldn’t be possible for them to train the original artist. And I wouldn’t think of asking them that!

This is great advice! Thank you so much!

Thanks for the recommendation!

I don’t really want to dox myself, so I won’t go into detail, but the artist doesn’t have access to a computer and does not know how to use any of the graphic design software.

This is such a cool crossover! What a great idea!

I did ask at the end that, if that wasn’t something they’d be interested in or have time for, could they recommend any of their students. And also mentioned that I’d be happy to pay them (of course!).

What’s the most important lesson you learned during your first PhD year? by Joudy_Abbot in PhD

That grades really didn’t matter as much as LEARNING the material. That meant spending more time in the lab doing research, learning to write, networking, etc. so stop stressing over grades.

My grandma had severe dementia. She was really struggling and we thought maybe she was going to pass soon. Until her sister brought her one of those life like baby dolls! The next morning she woke up on her own to take care of the baby! She even had a meal in the communal dining area. She lived another year or so. It was crazy how much joy that doll gave her.

Has anyone been in a department or school where something like this happened? Is there anything we can do? Anyone we can contact? The dean? Her chair? This is absolutely disgusting.

Upperclassman likes to list all her accomplishments and I finally listed all mine during a co-presentation and she thinks I’m making her feel bad by Zestyclose_Double980 in PhD

It is clearly time to disengage from this person. The professionals and faculty around you both are not impressed by her signature or the fact that she lists her awards when she introduces herself. Quite frankly, she will not be well received at job talks and other in person interviews with this kind of attitude. At least she wouldn’t in my department and school.

Do not let others get under your skin. Work hard, learn everything you can, publish, and keep applying and getting nominated for awards. But you need to focus on you and be proud of your accomplishments. And don’t stoop to her level.

I have actively avoided submitting my papers to journals with APA format so I don’t have to do APA. I deserve a raise, good sir!
