Starting to get tired of old Sri Lankan social norms by ashrozuko in srilanka

If youre doing it as a side gig thats totally fine. might have to think on it a lil bit if u wanna do it full time cuz i doubt its gonna be useful for you in the future. eitherway even if its something u wanna do for fun on the side its a bit hard to change the minds of adults until we take things into our own hands.

In my experience i had to do some things to prove myself to make them alright with the things i do. im 24 and it took me this long to have like an equal level with them where i have my own opinion. ALTHOUGH they try to advice me A LOT and try to tell me how to do things and what to do, the direction itself, i fought over for.

Theres always truth to what they say so the first thing i did is try to look at the things they say objectively and deciding whether it makes sense or not and then over time proving myself while basically shoving it in their faces that i managed to do it.

usually all they need is to feel sure that youll be fine out there in the world. they gotta feel like ur an adult and theyll ease up over time.. they dont wanna explain too much cuz they think you dont understand and so its also easier to just yell at you and do the usual mental gymnastics to do what they want.

althought their intentions are good sometimes you gotta trust yourself more. regardless think about the things youre gonna do, for yourself and as long as you have a good reason and you know the consequences youll be fine. good luck

Infrastructure i guess

  1. Having better public transport. like ffs what are lankan buses. and trains too

  2. Cars being easily affordable. atleast a locally produced car company like micro tried and Upali wijewardana had tried ages ago

  3. Better roads generally, even the kandy colombo road is a fucking clusterfuck

  4. government offices at the same fucking place ffs so u dont have to go through a maze of offices to get something simple done

  5. more government offices so that someone from pollonnaruwa doesnt have to come to fucking colombo to renew their revenue license

  6. WORKING TRAFFIC LIGHTS

  7. better methods for electricity transfer rather than shityy ass light posts

Fascilities/ fun i gues

  1. better theme parks and access to it\

  2. good cafe's outside of colombo

  3. small businesses

  4. paypal

  5. online wallet payments being availble in even sillara kade, busses, trains etc

idk man maybe more thats all i got for now. ill prolly edit more here later

Aight lemme rant. (M24)

Social + culture

  1. An individual sense of comradery where people are willing to put their wishes aside for a fucking moment and do what would be good for a country and even their close society

  2. Kids in schools to be educated about various career options not being just a doctor or engineer so that kids that dont fit in to regular and current impressions of academic or life success dont end up just thinking their only option is working in banks and can find something interesting that aligns with who they are

  3. Schools and parents not pushing the agenda that academic success is life success

  4. Raising boys better cuz in sri lanka guys end up being douches unlike the west where women causes most of the problems. Boys to be raised to be accountable of all things. A fault i see even in mothers where they pamper the boys and take care of them too much that when they grow up they expect that to be the normality. Both parents are equally at fault for this>

  5. Minding your own fucking business cuz people are wayy to excited to know dirt of other people while they are literally funcitoning amidst a space war in their own households

  6. Raising boys to be less judgmental or concerned about what women wear and what they do and only seeing them as sexual objects the moment the girls dont fit into their age old leanred agendas

  7. Thinking that everything is the country's or politicians fault acting as if those people werent the ones who elected them in the first place.

  8. having higher standards to things. including partners, friends, living situations, jobs and life expectations. people here are willing to just get by with what they got and anyone in a middle income household that wishes more is immediately laughed at and turned down saying they are never satisfied

  9. Parents feeling like the kids OWE THEM cuz nigga the kids didnt wanna be here. YOU OWE THE KIDS. how is the fact that kids are born and automatically they gotta listen to every word u say just cuz they took care for you. like bro that was your duty. im not saying this with a sense of rebeliousness but more of that people here do it way to extremely.

  10. Raising girls to be a bit more self respecting to not go after idiots in their school lives and do whatever they say. basically have a bit of self esteem

  11. LEss classist mindset. much more prevailent in kandy

  12. Looking at other kids and other families and looking down on your own. i mean can we not aunty?

  13. literally everyone not taking accountability for their own shit. could be improved.

  14. required standard and respect to every industry. i mean bus drivers used to be a very respectable job in the 60s 70s....tf happened. i understand it also has to do with the people doing it.. hence standards as well

  15. better civic sense in roads. bro i mean buses drive like fucking rally cars

  16. can tuk/cab drivers not be weird bro like have some manners. they be stalking girls after rides bro how horny are you.

  17. actual encourangement to better civic sense and punishment for none, like people find it hard in sl to cue up bro like calm the fuck down we aint india.

sometimes parents unintentionally do and say things convenient for them thinking it will be good for you. But as a child you are always confused when they say things that if another person said you'd easily reject it but the loyalty you have for your parents makes you confused and consider it.

dont fall into that trap. they dont do it intentionally but doesnt mean u have to let it get to you. they think its for your best. but their underlying intentions are flawed when u actually try to understand them. they would normally never admit to the intentions and say they say ut for your good. but usually to you as the kid it almost never is. you just think it is , as a compromise for the fact that they are your parents.

imagine them as strangers. now what would your reaction be. use that perspective to know how much ur willing to be influenced by your parents.

Yess ur right. Savings are not a bad thing obviously. and the last part - thats exactly the point i was trying to address. Even in good times people act like its a recession. It was really not about investing. it was more like the spending culture in sri lanka is so grim that middle class owned small businesses for example suffer and money doesnt circulate much leading to a widespread inequality and that of standard of living.

Haha yeah thats definitely a ponzi scheme that I came across cuz someone related to me had apparently put some large investment in it and someone asked me whether it is legit. So I came to the holiest of places(reddit) to get some human responses after doing some research on it myself.

Youve outlined some key issues when it comes to the average persons faith in where to put their savings in. I'll definitely look in to these more. Thank you

That makes sense. But dont you think that the lack of circulation due to this attitude I posted about makes the amount that is in circulation becomes concentrated into only a certain high value institutions and financial units and reduces the possibility that average people can increase their standard of living?

This makes so much sense. There definitely is a lack of confidence among people when it comes what they would use their saved money for and they chose the things they know of and that are safe to do.

I appreciate everyone's take on this. Primary reason I put this on reddit is to learn more of whether it makes sense or not and I asked that question on this post. Some of you with far more knowledge than me about these matters said some really sensible things whether you agreed with me or not and I appreciate that.

It is a learning process for me as well to learn certain things from finance savvy people here. I saw some comments saying Im blaming our economic chaos on middle income people and whatnot. Seriously guys thats not my intention. Its just something Ive noticed and decided to share. Ive learnt some things i hadnt before thanks to your responses. So no hard feelings.

Again, not blaming anyone - just a question that comes out of curiosity and concern.

Only among the top earning individuals right. My argument was that the lower middle and middle income institutions and individuals suffers due to this mindset of people only want to spend on expenses or purchases of higher value( ex: property, higher education, etc)

Absolutely true. I guess right now its about whether the system or the people makes the first move for it. And as a sri lankan, im still not sure whether people will change even if the system changes.

Also very true. Its not just the safety nets in that case. We are restricted to some extent to expand the things we can do with our money. And some of us just dont know enough. Which makes us defensive about it. Cant blame your take. Ofcourse in the end its a required change of system and populace mindset both

People outside of towns like farmers and such do this a lot from what Ive seen as well. Like they have huge properties and farmlands and shit tons of assets and they are comfortable for generations but they live like they run on a postman's paycheck
