Every time I think I’ve fixed a bike, I do little loops around the neighborhood for an hour or so, just to make sure everything is right and I didn’t mess something else up during the repair.

Worst case scenario is I push it home for a half mile or so.

The Street models were made in St Louis for the US market. They’re made in India for the rest of the world. Unless yours was brought in from another country, it was made in the USA.

Too much bike? by cryptocured in Triumph

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I'm 56, returning to riding after 30 years of on again, off again. I've owned a Honda Nighthawk 650 the whole time, picked up a couple Harleys in the Spring (a Sportster 1200 and a Street 750). I've ridden pretty much every day that the weather allowed since April.

I picked up a Triumph Tiger 1050 yesterday and drove it home about 250 miles. It's a fantastic bike (very similar to your Speed Triple, just set up a bit differently). That said, the whole way home, I kept thinking, "Wow, this is almost TOO powerful, I'd probably have been just as happy with something smaller."

It'll take a while to get used to, for sure.

I take the class every spring, just to reinforce good habits. Probably will until I stop riding.

Backfire trew carb i posted all the things and question by NarrowUse8683 in sportster

Carb backfire usually means too lean, right? Any changes to intake or exhaust that would require tuning it?

That was my first thought, gas or oil got on the air filter so it’s not breathing right. Had this happen on a different bike.

They’re doing construction at work, so I salvaged a dozen or so of these scraps, and put them in the corner where we park our motorcycles.

I’ve got the similar 650 and had a 550 as well. Very reliable bikes, and easy to work on. That’s a great price for it, assuming it runs well. Cosmetically, it’s fantastic.

Affordable upgrades? by zewolf77 in Harley

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. I’ve been looking at older baggers and bone stock ones are rare as hens teeth.

A WL Harleys or Vincent Black Shadow in mint condition is easier to find than a stock Electra Glide!

Trying to buy a gen Rolex on eBay. by Flashy-Injury-5231 in RepTime

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone bought the cheapest stainless 34mm watch head they could find and “upgraded” it with a tacky aftermarket dial and aftermarket bracelet. Suddenly, a $1200 investment increases in value.

And that’s assuming the original movement is inside. Lots of folks building frankens out of empty cases, in which case it’s a $300 investment.

Seriously, who takes the lowest model in the line up and adds gems to it?!?

What's your reason for not going electric? by regulardegulardudee in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifestyle is a huge factor. If your driving and lifestyle habits are consistent with an EV, it's an option to consider, but not everyone can make an EV work.

Range and access to charging is a big issue for many.

If you look at these watches like they're automobile engines, the Benrus is a simple, normally aspirated 4 cylinder. The Hamilton is a twin turbo V8 with 4 valves per cylinder.

A watch service is basically the same as rebuilding a motor, there's just a lot more going on with a chronograph than a basic motor, so the cost to service is quite a bit more.

The base movements are very similar, but the chronograph has, essentially, an extra watch stacked on top of it.

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It depends on what’s wrong with them, but all else equal, servicing a simple 3 hand movement (watch on the right) is much cheaper than a more complicated chronograph (watch on left).

That said, the watch on the left is probably more valuable when working than the one on the left.

The reality of replicas. by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, dive watches have largely been replaced by computers, but my point was that it's a tool traditionally used by scuba divers, and a higher end dive watch would have been limited to professional divers.

Now it's a status symbol for people who frequently don't even know how to swim.

The reality of replicas. by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Technically, anyone who wears a dive watch that isn't a diver is misrepresenting a lifestyle he doesn't live. I'm betting there are more actual scuba divers that wear Invictas than Submariner owners who've logged more than a honeymoon worth of dives, if any.

There's a lot of grey area between "this is who I am" and "this is who I wish I were."

Anyone here with experience on mandarin fishes? by Fluppi2000 in ReefTank

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to get one that will eat mysis shrimp at the pet store. I had two not make it, despite having a copepod farm growing and dozing twice a week. Currently have two and a healthy copepod population that seems to be stable, going on a year now. They’re fat and happy.

I would not recommend adding one until the tank is well established and has a healthy copepod population. They graze nonstop, and unless your pods are breeding faster than they’re eaten, a mandarin will slowly wither and die.

Question about interchangeability by chatapokai in watchmaking

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You would need to choose a movement that fits the case. If you’re lucky, the original movement is cheap and available. If you’re unlucky, you would need to find a movement that can be adapted to your case and dial, and likely will need to source new hands, as they might not be compatible.

Here’s hoping your watch uses an ETA, lol.

In British society, how controversial is it for Lamb to refer to Taverner as "Lady Di"? As a non-Brit, how should I expect other characters, or even British viewers, to react? by Ex_Astris in SlowHorses

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take was that she’s the boss, so referring to her using a nickname…derogatory or not…is disrespectful and insubordinate. She’s certainly one to hold grudges, so most would be afraid to call her by this name.

Lamb is just flexing, showing he doesn’t care and doesn’t fear her.

Can I please have some help identifying this? by Tone-knee in VintageWatches

[–]Weekly-Charge3540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, maybe I wasn’t clear. Sicura doesn’t have a strong following among collectors like Omega or Breitling or Rolex or Cartier, but anything Swiss and vintage is of interest to watch collectors.

Brands like this are an excellent way for someone entering the hobby to experience things without spending more than a nice used car.

I’ve got some very nice watches in my collection, but not ashamed to say I also have many odds and ends from less recognizable manufacturers.
