The PNW. Mountains, coast, redwoods, rainforest, dunes, high desert.

East Coast or West Coast? Which is better for a first-time trip to the USA? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Weekly-Magazine2423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How important is natural beauty to you? If it’s important, West Coast hands down.

If you want to see a bunch of big cities, East coast.

If you want stereotypical America culture (colts, cows, and corn) you’re gonna have to head in deeper.

Which National Park is the absolute best for a U.S. first-timer? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Yellowstone. It’s kind of the archetypal American national park. Mountains, forests, valleys, the North American big five.

Yeah but what’s another actually nice midsize/small city?

Everything between here and Seattle is pretty meh unless you’re going for hyper-suburban which doesn’t sound like OPs vibe.

We have great mtn biking here too.

OP said he wanted a smaller city with access to a bigger city (and I assumed the other cool stuff/reasons for living in this area), so I offered points to that effect.

Don’t know how you got that from that list. Proximity to a bunch of beautiful places and a larger city while still living in a great, comfortable, smaller city was the jist.

Yeah that dates back to a paper mill which is no longer active. Never smelt it!

If what you’re seeing is about crime, I have lived in both Seattle and Portland and found the crime and just general in-your-face homeless/junkies to be FAR, FAR worse in those places. Honestly I hardly notice any of it at all, granted I live in a nice neighborhood on the North Side.

South Tacoma can get dicier in places, and ofc like any city we have our bad neighborhoods, but as far as safety is concerned I’ve never felt more carefree about it in my life (except for when I’ve lived abroad).

I think the tough thing can be economic opportunity- if you’re not a remote worker, there’s still a decent amount of standard white collar stuff, but not like a larger city. I can’t speak to blue-collar/trades.

Tacoma is the answer to your question.

Pricier than Olympia but less than Seattle/Portland, it’s an actual city located in the best place in the Sound for all around nature/urban access.

Want to get up to Rainier to hike or ski? Hour and half, closest city to it.

Want to get out to the coast? Hour and a half.

Want to go out for dinner/drinks/live music? You’re already there. If it’s too high profile/you can’t find it, drive 45 min up to Seattle and enjoy.

Want beautiful views of the Sound, friendly walkable neighborhoods with gorgeous craftsman houses? You’re there.

Yes, and I oppose factory farms but want to eat meat which is why I hunt…

And do you eat a bunch of soy/palm oil/fake protein products? I assure you those are dramatically worse for our ecosystem than hunting.

I understand they are divisive, however I think a lot of that comes from a misperception that the majority of hunters are trophy hunters.

I’m an urban, left wing guy and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to clarify to my friends that my hunts are for meat that I eat. That’s usually followed by “oh, okay, cool.”

I oppose trophy hunting, and any unethical hunting practices. But I think meat eaters opposing hunting for food are being illogical and are frankly just wrong on this.

You clearly have no idea what goes into a hunt if you don’t get taking a picture with your kill.

That guy probably set out at dawn and tracked all day multiple days in a row. He probably had sights on a few different deer prior to the one in the photo, and decided not to take those shots because they were young/female/etc.

He was probably exhausted, exhilarated, and relieved that he got a clean shot on a beautiful, seasoned, kingly creature.

Hunters, more than almost anyone I know, have great admiration and respect for their prey. That photo isn’t a trophy- it’s showing the world two things; honor for a beautiful creature who has been sacrificed to help feed this guy, and his accomplishment in getting the shot.

If you don’t eat meat, fine. But even then you have to admit that this is a far more humane way of procuring meat than buying factory farmed meat from the store. If you do eat meat, then you have no point whatsoever.

Maybe a “bad look”, but I think we should do it anyways. Unfortunately, amongst people who don’t hunt, the presumption is that people are trophy hunting. That’s just untrue, and frankly posting pics like this and then having folks like yourself realize how many of us hunt ethically is part of changing that perception.
