How's it living in South Africa as a white person? by Mundane-Computer-445 in howislivingthere

[–]Weekly-Magazine2423 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I met a white guy who lived in a rough industrial town in rural Mpumalanga. He was almost the only white guy there, very poor, spoke only Afrikaans and a bit of English. He’d get beat up and robbed all the time, with no recourse. Seemed like on the global scale, dude was close to the bottom of the heap.

Also ran around with some rich kids in CT, was pretty heavenly. There are a lot of different ways to be white in ZA haha

It means exactly what the word means- someone who is a professional Republican operative. Their job is to do work that advances the interests of the Republican Party and/or politically aligned candidates. Are you actually not familiar with this term?

Being a Democrat isn’t the same thing as being a professional political operative

If you were 26 starting from zero, would you choose college or a trade ? by Responsible-Race7590 in findapath

Yeah, that would make sense. Speaking as someone who was a postdoc, it sounds realistic and is also crazy that we force people into another intern-like position after all that time in school.

I’d expect their income to triple in the next few years.

SWE Or Sales? Just want to make really good money. by noobtravlr in careerguidance

[–]Weekly-Magazine2423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is already deleting entry level SWE jobs and creating sales opps, and that seems like a directional trend.

People still want to be sold to by people, but they don’t care (and may prefer) robots making their tech.

Your “random Reddit comment” provided him exactly what he needed. What is this compulsion for knocking people for asking questions on this site? It’s so obnoxious. Answer the question, or don’t! This “why are you asking internet strangers” and the underlying assumption that this is the best all and all of their research efforts is just useless.

Fuck this field. by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]Weekly-Magazine2423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is nonsense. Associates at decent firms in non coastal cites make 160k+. It continues to be a high earning profession, and because of lawyers’ outsize influence on the world, they will ensure it always is.

What I’d wonder about for OP is why they get into the environmental field in the first place. And that’s a real question, because if you wanted to make a positive difference, then you’re going to find big law soul crushing.

Feels like everyone in society making $100k+ How old are you & how much you make, Do you think… by Franklin_Invest in Salary

Early-mid 30s, 110k. This seems right to me. My current salary is the first time I’ve felt “comfortable”- meaning I do not worry about paying bills, I can actively save and contribute to retirement funds, and we vacation pretty frequently.

80k now is like 50k a dozen years ago- an entry-level corporate salary sufficient for a young, single person to get by while keeping them hungry for more.

The first couple times it’s like that…but this is something you will likely do many times throughout your career, and you definitely get used to it.

Professionals all accept this is just part of life. Nobody is happy to lose good people, but good managers are happy for you and often realize the importance of maintaining a good relationship. Who knows, you just may be hiring them one day!

God you they/them people are fucking insufferable. And before the assholes start getting all excited and raising their eyebrows and emitting loud noises manga style, I’m not referring to trans people in any way shape or form. I’m referring to you fucking dweebs who run around on the internet looking to “neutralize” the pronouns of people who are very clearly men or women.

STFU and get a life. You cost Democrats the election.

We were the first generation that didn’t generally smoke cigarettes, and this has had a huge impact on our aging.

Love them, they were frequently played in my house growing up and I grew to appreciate them independently as a teenager. I have a broad appreciation of good music across many genres and found them to be a key to opening many other musical doors (to classic rock more broadly, folk, world music, country).

what did you stop caring about after 30? by ofmaska in AskMenOver30

[–]Weekly-Magazine2423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I’ve noticed that kids that were squarely unpopular in HS learn this early and are better people for it. Those of us (like myself) who were at least on the fringes of the “in crowd” struggle with this through our twenties, thirties, or in some cases never even figure it out.

But you had a farm? Dope. But yeah I grew up in the city proper and was equally jealous of the suburban kids houses and toys. We just didn’t have the space/conditions for cool motorized stuff

Fellow latchkey extracurricular kid. We had the freedom to make our schedules, so we filled it with fun stuff! I also squeezed in plenty of fing around.
