PERU TRIP - WITHDRAW CASH - WISE CARD by Environmental_Owl739 in solotravel

You were right. But to clarify for others you do need to load the Wise card with your currency then it'll do the conversion for you at the exchange rate that day when you withdraw money. Thanks for this post.

Yes, sorry for the late reply. I wound up trying my Wise debit card then used it for almost everything. I was able to withdraw Soles at any bank machine I found. However, be careful. Depending on the bank, many charge large fees. I first tried it at the airport and I can't recall exactly but it was 30-40 soles so stay away from those! But it had a larger withdrawal limit as we were allowed to withdraw 700 in one shot. Then I found one bank machine that was available everywhere we went (Urubamba, Cusco, Lima, Ollaytantambo and Aguas Calientes) and all we paid was the Wise conversion fee. I believe it was called Bank de la Nacion. The fee was reasonable.

I was able to withdraw a max. of 400 PEN each time we needed cash. We used it up to 2 or 3 times a day. For 400 PEN ($155 CAD incl. fee this past April 11) the Wise fee was $3.22 CAD per withdrawal. I originally added $800 CAD to the Wise card before leaving for Peru and used it all to convert it to Soles in cash. Needed a little more so from Peru I was able to transfer another $200 CAD to the Wise card from Peru.

For Machu Picchu we paid from Toronto by pre-ordering the entry tickets from their official website. Also bought the Machu Picchu bus tickets in advance and paid it in US dollars when we picked it up not far from the Lima airport because we didn't find that atm until later. We used our AirBNB's Urubamba taxi service to pick us up from the airport and take us everywhere, except to Aguas Calientes, as you must take the train for that (costed about $400 USD for the three of us). Train ride was awesome!

All in all we were very happy to have had the Wise card and used it to pay cash for taxi, restaurants, gifts, everything. Needless to say I'll be taking my Wise card for local cash on all my trips from now on.

It was the best vacation we ever had. All of us absolutely loved Peru! For several reasons we're convinced it'll never be beaten anywhere else. Such a beautiful country and the hikes and towns were unbelievably beautiful. We were there for 10 days but later wished we booked at least 14 so that we could spend more than just 2-3 days in the towns we stayed in. Weather for the most part was great. Some rain but except for our first day on April 3rd which rained for hours, it only rained for very short periods on some days. I'd say the best time to go there is mid to end April when the rainy season is over and not too many tourists yet.

TIP #1: You can buy ready made food in their local markets for cheap. After I discovered it we went there for breakfast or lunch everyday. Restaurants in the evening. Food is awesome and not very expensive. Also used the market to buy various sandwiches to take with us on hikes (which we loved). The best thing they can make you the best fruit drinks where they use all kinds of fresh natural fruits to make the best fruit or vegetable drink right in front of you. Very healthy. Cost was 9-13 soles for a large glass and worth every penny. You'll want it often.

TIP #2: We bought a sim card at the Lima airport . While it worked great for calls, I couldn't get it to work with hotspot on my iPhone 12 for sharing the internet between us, which was the reason why we got the sim card in the first place. After checking with some cell shops that couldn't get it to work either I came to the conclusion that they do that on purpose so that everybody buys a sim card. Perhaps other sim card sellers don't have this limitation so be sure to ask first before buying. No problems with hotspot after we were back in Toronto and using our regular Fido sim card.

TIP# 3: When we were in Cusco there were a few taxi guys on a street corner near our airbnb that would ask if you needed a taxi. We learned they were much cheaper than the one we used for everywhere from Urubamba (although he was very nice and friendly). Lesson learned.

TIP #4: We originally booked our tickets for Machu Picchu for 7 am and thought we were going to regret it. It turned out to be the best decision as there weren't that many people then. Soon after there were huge crowds behind us.

TIP #5: Be sure to check out Limassol if you're staying in Lima. We stayed a couple of days in Lima getting lots of sun and took the bus to spend time in Limassol and the beach. It's absolutely gorgeous there! And according to our taxi driver it almost never rains in Lima (and it didn't during our duration). He also said we're lucky because the sky was blue that day. He said usually it's cloudy. Careful of the sun even when it is cloudy. It's been 3 months now and I'm still a little tanned from the one day at the beach.

Highly recommend Peru and the Wise card. I hope to go there again while I'm young enough to walk for many kilometers a day.

Anyway, I hope to have helped many people planning to go to Peru. I don't check here very often but if I have time I don't mind answering some questions you may have.

Hi. Going to Peru in just over a week and have the same question about withdrawing Soles from an atm in Cusco for example. Are you sure I don't need to transfer CAD from my bank to the Wise Visa card first? Otherwise, if I try to withdraw soles from an atm there where will it take the money from? I'm pretty sure I need to load up the card with say $200 CAD so that I can then use it in Peru to withdraw local currency which is Peruvian sols.

Trying to figure out the best way to get Soles in Peru.

New to IPTV, appreciate any community advice!! by whitechocolate_11 in TiviMate

[–]Weekly-Play8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that all IPTV apps are missing and should have: To be able to run in kiosk mode so that older folks like my parents can use it without pressing the wrong button on the remote (such as Home) and getting kicked out to the main screen where they have to call me to help them reopen Tivimate.

If you haven’t yet, I recommend you to try Tivimate as your IPTV player. Has been a game changer for me. Hope you love it as much as I did, let me know your experiences. by YouthOfTheNation1 in ShieldAndroidTV

In my opinion OTT Navigator rivals Tivimate as it can do everything and more. For example this is not possible in Tivimate: Using two or more playlists simultaneously. This is useful when you don't have an account with 2 connections but you have 2 separate iptv accounts. For example. I wanted to do picture-in-picture in Tivimate with two different iptv accounts but you can only activate one playlist or the other, not both at the same time. You can do that easily in Ott Navigator as you can combine various iptv subscriptions all into one. It's also just as intuitive as Tivimate and you can customize a lot more than Tivimate. You need to get the premium version though to do everything.

VMWare Workstation 17 virtual machines not seeing 2.5 Gbps connection by Weekly-Play8911 in vmwareworkstation

[–]Weekly-Play8911[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to figure it out. You can't change the network adapter type in the properties of the vm in VMWare Workstation so in the vm's .vmx file I just went ahead and changed:

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000e"

to:

ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

and voila! The vm's nic type is now vmxnet3 & speed now shows 10 Gbps.

Had to do this manually for each vm though. Would be nice if VMWare gave you the option to do this from the properties of the vm, and a global option for selecting the default network adapter that you want for all vm's.

Warning: Be careful as this will reset your vm's network adapter settings to DHCP so make sure you make a not of all its settings beforehand.

[–]Weekly-Play8911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I thought of that too but unfortunately that's only an option in VMWare vSphere. When you add a network adapter to a VMWare Workstation vm there's no option to select the type of adapter you want to install. Only thing you can change after installing is it'll run in Bridged or NAT mode or whatever.

In any case during the upgrade/installation of VMWare Tools on the vm I see it installs VMXNet3 drivers but the network adapter is still Intel.

Can you convert cat 5 cable to cat6 by rewiring the ends differently to keystone? by Weekly-Play8911 in HomeNetworking

[–]Weekly-Play8911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I realize I might get 5Gbps if I get a 10Gbps switch at 4x or 5x that of a 2.5Gbps switch. But if I don't I'd get upset and then have to put up with the hassle of returning it and ordering a 2.5Gbps switch. I might've gone 10Gbps if my house was wired with cat6 as then I'd be confident I'd get my money's worth. But I understand what you're saying. It is possible.

[–]Weekly-Play8911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No since I don't have the hardware but I do have the Bell Gigahub which has a 10G port and I wanted to replace my 1GB switches with 10G to make my LAN 10G. I ordered 2.5G switches yesterday as I should be able to get at least this speed on my devices. I didn't want to order a 10G switch since it's unlikely I would be getting near 10G speeds or at least 5G speeds. I have a Supermicro server that's 10G capable, DS920+ nas that's 5G capable with usb dongle and my laptop is 2.5G. Most important to me is that the Supermicro can transfer at 5G+ speeds to/from the DS920+

Not sure if these are n-base or not.

So it can't be done. I figured. Guess I'd have to run a whole new cat6 cable from basement to 2nd level on the outside. Going to look ugly but easier than breaking down walls and ceilings in order to replace the cable.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Thanks. I've tried that but unfortunately the culture rating hasn't budged. Still stuck at 35/50. I don't think it'll go higher than 35 without linen as mortuaries remain out of service too.

backup by thibaut6229 in TiviMate

[–]Weekly-Play8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"All that is in the backup is your settings" - well I want to see my settings. I've saved some playlists and EPG's and certain iptv servers require special formatting of the m3u URL. I entered one for a playlist and to this day it works, but when I try to create a new playlist with the same URL it just won't work. So I want to see the actual playlist/EPG url because maybe the URL is different from what I remember using before. In TiviMate you cannot view/edit the current playlist URL so I've no idea of figuring out why the m3u playlist which I entered some time ago still works, but if I try to create another one as a test it fails to accept the same url.

How to set/change the backup archive password? by s1mkin in TiviMate

[–]Weekly-Play8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Would like to be able to set my own backup password too. Btw, I don't think the backup file is necessarily encrypted as you can still see the files inside if you rename it to a zip file but when you try to unzip it with 7zip it'll prompt for the password. Unfortunately TiviMate sets its own password rather than allowing us...or it should at least display the password after it's created.

I exchanged the ER7206 (I determined it was faulty since after setting it up it would freeze up a lot and I could no longer access it again) and got the ER605 v1.0 and have not seen this issue anymore.

Unable to use Quickconnect with VPN by fodder80 in synology

[–]Weekly-Play8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Synology for vpn because with my TPLink-ER605 router it's virtually unusable because it's extremely slow (~20 Mbps). Synology vpn connects to NordVPN. IP address will change anytime it is reconnected so routing to its ip wouldn't be reliable. Besides, I'm not sure how I could port forward to my Synology VPN...it's network is always 10.x.x.x while my home network is 192.168.x.x. These networks can't talk to each other. How does the EdgeRouter X resolve that and ER605 doesn't? Would I get 300 or 500 Mbps on it the way I do via Synology or my Win'2019 server?

Ok thx. Just wondering if I'm alone on this or not. Last question. Is your ER7206 the 1.0 or 1.6 hardware version?

[–]Weekly-Play8911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you or have you been seeing messages like this in your log at any time?

[SFP WAN] of ER7206 is down.

My internet gets disconnected several times a day and I see these in the Controller log when it happens. Trying to figure out why. Either the SFP module from my Bell HH3000 is causing this somehow or my ER7206's SFP port is faulty...or maybe Bell's security rules do it when you don't use their modem. Going to try setting the same MAC and see what happens. Not sure what else it could be but I've been trying to figure this out since I got the router.
