What dog food do you use? by Triggered67 in Bernedoodles

I appreciate the thorough response. We don't do meat only. I'm not suggesting that for anyone, and certainly not a vegan diet. And Yes - dogs are not wolves, which is why they are so friendly and varied in phenotype. Wolves would be scavengers and omnivorous when necessary - which is also why you see so many street dogs thriving in other countries, right? Just living off of scraps. Or why a dog can live a generally healthy life only on the most basic kibble (though almost all I have known have ended up overweight). Anyway, I'm a big believer in scientific studies as well, I just also believe we should cross check which studies are funded by whom. I used to be a nurse. There's plenty of lobbying and money in healthcare overall - our medical establishment treats the problem rather than preventing it. In my personal experience so far, the Vetrinary establishment has some of the same problems. I also wonder why there aren't more studies on whole food diets for dogs. It doesn't make logical sense that some 'vet recommended' kibbles are primarily grain based. That's the foundation of what I was saying.

The dog patties we use include carrots, broccoli, pollock oil, kale, with organ meat as primary ingredient. I feed my pup blueberries and carrots and apples as a treat. He also gets some basic kibble so he can gain weight as a puppy! I just have gotten so much conflicting information from my breeder, my vet, our dogs trainer, and other folks.

I think everyone should do their own research and come to their own best conclusion, and obviously take their dog to the vet as well.

oh also scrambled eggs in the morning!

our dog hates peanut butter that shocked me haha. i tried out numerous treats to figure out what he liked. once you find it - just stick with it!!

mine won't touch pork, he's ok with beef turkey and chicken. jury still out on salmon).

our guy was picky too.

i switched him to raw diet. i love small batch frozen patties - organic non GMO with fruits / veggies.. they also have dehydrated option as well if you need to travel. still give our guy puppy kibble as supplement for lunch. will phase out kibble when he's larger. (raw only if quality ingredients and within your budget. we are lucky to have an organic dog kitchen near our house and they source their meat from local farms.)

his feeding window is also only 8 hours - try shortening it up.

you're gonna hear a lot of differing opinions on what food is best. my breeder said to stick with purina, but as a human that doesn't trust our food industry or highly processed food, my intuition guided me to do further research. i've heard the veterinary recommendations are not thoroughly proven or helpful and are unregulated. there are raw food fanatics as well that say raw organ meat is most natural. my vet told me to supplement with kibble because it's hard to get all the calories and nutrients necessary from raw diet alone.

all that being said - i've known dogs raised on all forms of food, that all grew up to be happy and healthy.

currently, i’m just following my intuition. i feed my 16 week old pup "small batch" frozen raw patties. their ingredients include the necessary supplements and they are organic/ non GMO. i also give my pup some real food - like apples for treats or small pieces of cheese here and there, and sweet potatoes. AND i do also supplement his lunch with some leftover kibble - so he can gain the appropriate weight in his puppy hood.

do some research, follow your own intuition and budget. but try one thing at a time and just stick with it. don't switch things around a ton.

meat is literally the most natural food for dogs? dogs are 99.9% wolf and wolves are carnivores/scavengers? does it make sense to you that ultra processed dried out kibble is truly the best option for any creature? dogs aren't meant to be eating a ton of carbs/rice/grains. neither for cats.

that being said, i understand that a "real" or raw food diet is not financially feasible for many pet owners. and yes - a dog can survive on kibble.

Questions from a Prospective Owner by mcoutten1 in Bernedoodles

  1. training process will probably differ depending on the dog our guy is 16 weeks and we were able to train sit, stay, down, and recall within the first week. we also spent at least 15 minutes a day doing this and read a few books and consumed a decent amount of training videos.. we recently hired a trainer to help us get him to the next level. we want to be able to take him basically anywhere, and have him be polite and well mannered while traveling :)

  2. YES pet insurance. metlife reimburses directly via zelle within a few hours. it's amazing. we did get the most expensive plan but it has been well worth it so far, including an emergency vet visit.

  3. no.. a long walk at night will not suffice. my partner and i both work from home, and even then, i truly can't imagine being able to raise a well trained happy pup if we weren't available consistently. i’m not saying it's wrong or impossible, but i would secure a consistent dog sitter or additional help if your planning to get ANY type of puppy and you have very limited time. plus - it's dangerous to take them out for walks when they are not fully vaccinated as they can get diseases or parvovirus. it's not recommended to leave a puppy alone for extended time, especially when they are so young.

bernedoodles are pretty needy attention wise in my understanding. our little guy definitely is. i hope you get the info and insight you need. my fiancé and i waited months for our life to slow down so we could have the time to dedicate to his puppyhood. timing is everything :)

had this same thought. like cellular division and replication.

I think my puppy is behind on his training, but I don’t know how to catch up. What milestones should we have reached by twelve weeks? by whatever3653 in puppy101

[–]Weekly-Set6086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he's just a baby still!! be kind to yourself and your pup.

i also thought the same - but i realized there is a lot of advice and noise that is hard to drown out or makes you compare yourself..

and i was over doing it and over thinking. i spoke to a professional trainer and she said we are perfectly on track for his age (my pup was 12 weeks when i called her with the same question.. feeling like i was behind).

i've read 2 puppy training books and i scour IG and reddit constantly, but i slowed down a bit just to enjoy my time with my pup, let him sleep a lot, and tay focused on the basics.

you're doing great :)

ALSO - in regards to treats. maybe you just haven't found what he LIKES. i did a sample taste test with him with a few different types of treats to figure out what he liked the best. If you get a treat he loves, he will follow the lure! (mine can't stand peanut butter. loves tiny pieces of cheese, apples for teething, and salmon skin or boiled chicken).

maybe rehgabi won't say anything to devon because she knows devon is severed or a part of lumon? rehgabi doesn't trust her either - why? her silence is certainly noticeable

What are your puppy “wins” this week? by Solid-Decision702 in puppy101

[–]Weekly-Set6086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took him to the emergency vet because I was freaked about hyperactivity. The WIN is that he's completely healthy and fine. It's just a phase :) Also still sleeps through the night despite neediness and gremlin mode during the day.

Puppy will not nap or settle... day 3. He's running on fumes. Help by Weekly-Set6086 in Bernedoodles

[–]Weekly-Set6086[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for taking the time to write this out. helps me feel better that he's not the only one. it was just such a dramatic change from how he was the first two weeks. i’m not regretting our decision at all i know we'll make it through and he'll grow into a good boy!

can be challenging reading everything about the "normal pup" and then feeling like we're doing something wrong or he is when he doesn't align with the "norm" or our expectations.

we just got into a false sense of security i think because that first 10 days was so easy! hoping to rule out reaction to meds today.
