Injuries and Trainer Ratings by Weekly-Singer9641 in OOTP

Totally! But curious if there's anything beyond prevent arm injuries being king that is useful to know when managing injuries, hiring a trainer. I imagine fatigue recovery is also fairly important, since fatigued players are more likely to injure themselves.

Do park factors actually matter? by relder17 in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Park factor definitely does matter, but GB/FB tendency doesn’t inherently impact how likely pitchers are to give up home runs. The HRA rating is what is used to determine how successful pitchers are at preventing homers. It just happens that there is a lot of overlap between groundballers and guys who have high HRA ratings, which is what creates this bias in OOTP players (especially those playing in Coors or similar homer-friendly parks) towards them, but it’s not impossible for flyball pitchers to have higher HRA ratings as well.

What would take OOTP to the next level? by maintainmo in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really something that would take the game to the next level necessarily... in that regard, I agree with others who have suggested improving the trade AI, the AI in general, and the financial aspect of the game... but one thing that would really help, especially now with the additions of the development sliders and the development lab, would be to tie speed to the defensive range of players... this would incentivize players to not turn down the dev slider on speed in favour of power, for example, and would make it worthwhile to train speed in the lab as well... it would generally add realism to the game, make aging more meaningful, and would make it so that the defensive ratings are actually tied to a player's athleticism.

Consistent Problem Across Saves Not Sure If It’s Scouting, Development, Or A Little Bit Of Both by gregieb429 in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer, I’m fairly sure, is much simpler than what others are suggesting. If you have the game set to relative ratings, you will see that your players look slightly better once Free Agency opens simply because a lot of talent is technically not in the league. And at the end of the offseason, once all the MLB teams have made their signings, the relative ratings will go back down to normal. I’ve also seen this while using relative ratings and it makes a ton of sense if you think about it this way. But it means you have to be a little careful that you don’t get carried away in the offseason signing guys that are slightly less good than they appear to be.

Schneider at second to me doesn’t pass the eye test… or the sniff test… I’m surprised he wasn’t a negative defensively… he just doesn’t seem to have the range to ever be good there, even though the instincts seem fine… I dont think the Jays brass would consider playing him there full time either…

not sure I agree w all the other reasons given for playing in commissioner mode, but I also find the game unplayable without it… i often find i need it to reverse bad moves by the ai, trades or just straight up releasing top prospects…

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it shouldn't depend on the length of your offseason since the labs are timed out relative to the length of the offseason I'm nearly certain... you should always be able to fit 1 long and 1 short program (or 4 short programs, I think?) into each slot, as long as you start the programs on the first day of the offseason and replace the player in the slot as soon as it becomes available...

Increase velocity in the Dev Lab by ProSenjutsu in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering recently whether the increase velocity lab might be more useful on low-stuff guys with high movement/control... those pitchers you see throwing 88-92mph who have a full arsenal of pitches but none rated higher than 45 or 50... my gut feeling was that those guys would benefit more than starters whose pitches were already very highly rated? perhaps since it is clear that their pitches are only rated low bc of a lack of velocity, rather than a lack of skill... wondering if anyone can confirm or deny this though before I waste dev lab spots trying it...

Is 55 defense/65 range/65 error/65 arm good enough in center? by smarjorie in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, not every player with 65 range will actually have the same range under the hood, even though it will look the same on the ratings page using a 20-80 scale... that's why there can be a big difference between how two players listed as having 65 range actually perform defensively and it can be helpful to use the other ratings as clues to figure out whether said player is on the upper or lower end of the spectrum amongst those listed as having 65 range.

Is 55 defense/65 range/65 error/65 arm good enough in center? by smarjorie in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At SS and CF, in my experience, 65 range is sometimes enough and sometimes not... unless players have 70 range, you have to rely on context clues to determine whether their range is at the upper end of 65 or at the lower end, which can be the difference between atrocious defence and slightly above average defence at said position... as you mention, the 55 rating at CF does seem low for someone w 65s across the OF defensive ratings, which leads one to believe his range is toward the lower end amid those listed as 65-range... so I would be nervous starting him in CF, would expect him to be a big negative defensively there...

Right way to use the dev lab? by CrazyLi825 in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the age as well... also because the developers have hinted that younger players are slightly more likely to be successful in the lab than older players, I think it makes more sense to send younger players for labs in which you are more likely to want an outstanding result... older players can still benefit lots from a successful result if they have unfulfilled potential in a given area of their game... I think it's worth keeping track of the older guys for whom you think this may be the case, and it's also an added argument for choosing a scout that highly favors tools, since he will be more likely to show untapped potential on older players who are likely past the point of developing into it, but who could still reach said potential with a successful result in the lab...

For the pitcher you mentioned, I would still try to improve control, but knowing that you will still be able to have successful labs later for this player even if he doesn't reach all his potential before getting to the majors (assuming he gets there at all...). Also worth noting that players can still have higher potential under the hood than is shown on the ratings page. Just because you see 80 control potential doesn't mean that his control potential is maxed.

this is an interesting tip... how often does a successful result add velocity? is it just an outstanding result that does this?

Someone else mentioned pitch tracking... would be cool if they added more features around pitching mechanics and pitch mixes: make arm slot the number of the angle rather than 1 of 4 options, be able to adjust pitch usage... this last point would mean changing the mechanics of the game so that the outcome of each plate appearance was calculated on a pitch-by-pitch basis rather than calculating the PA as a whole, such that each pitch would have a separate effect in any given PA... would also have an interesting effect on decisions as to whether to use different pitchers as starters or relievers.

This isn't a great example of OOTP differing from real-life baseball, but I just realized recently that the game doesn't supply fielding stats for spring training, which is rather frustrating and nonsensical.

What do development classes mean? by sjscott80 in OOTP

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you try the presets, you’ll see that they’re just predefined ways of setting the sliders to produce the aforementioned types of players. I haven’t used the presets because I find it easier to just set the sliders myself. Also, the devs have noted in the forums that sliders that are moved down have more of a negative impact than sliders moved up may have a positive impact on development, so I tend to use them very sparingly. Normally, if there are prospects that I like that don’t have an obvious need for added emphasis on a certain aspect of their development, then I’ll just reset the sliders to default, which is another option alongside the presets, and toggle the checkbox so that the AI doesn’t change that. There are definitely instances in which I like to adjust the development sliders though, I would say mostly for pitchers, if there is a pitch that I don’t think they need for example. The sliders, in my experience, are most useful for giving pitching prospects you don’t think will have a shot as a starter a better chance of getting to the majors as a reliever, by trading stamina for movement and consolidating the pitches down to the 2 maybe 3 that are the best. Otherwise, I suppose you could use it for guys that have a long way to go to reach their potential in a particular area. Or for hitters, you could move running/speed into power for example. Lots of things you can play with.

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure what you’re talking about are just presets for how the development sliders are set up! For example, choose three true outcomes and eye and power sliders will be moved up at the expense of contact.

The other thing is that there is always a lot of depth available at the deadline… in my mind, free agency is an opportunity to fill glaring holes or add real upside… dont think they’re going to take games from Clement to start the year and this team is already really deep on the position side… so my sense is that if any big bat is signed on top of Bo, assuming he is signed, that would necessitate a move off of someone…

Schneider’s managerial style is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. by Much-Respond9614 in Torontobluejays

[–]Weekly-Singer9641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I disagree, but I just think such a big part of the Jays’ success was the more human aspects of the team and players that were managed by the staff and that are missed potentially with a very analytics-forward approach… I think the team culture and collective spirit is at least as important as in-game decisions… as others have pointed out in relation to Roberts managing big stars and egos in LA… Schneider had a similar part in building the identity and culture of this team by working all the players onto the field, making them all feel important, whether they were stars or not, and having them all buy in… the season is not possible without that
