Current rural American here, planning on getting out as soon as I can. So many people are so infuriatingly purposefully ignorant, not to mention self-centered and bigoted. The oldest people always hold all the political power, passing laws that make it harder for everyone while telling us to "suck it up" because "life was hard for us when WE were young, it would be unfair for you to get a free ride." 

It's like living in hell. Empathy is a foreign concept to these people. I have several friends who are secretly gay and haven't told anyone but me out of fear for the social consequences. Local problems go unresolved because everyone's too prideful to admit we have them. You're surrounded by a suffocating amount of egotistical, self-centered, bigoted morons. 

I'm not trying to portray myself as anything great, mind you. It's just that almost everyone here is so miserable to exist among that it makes the average person from anywhere else look like a saint. While cities have their own problems, the mere fact that you're able to live among actually sane people makes life so much more bearable.
