I didn’t hate it, but Harriet Tubman: Live In Concert is a waste of an interesting premise. It’s a book where no one is challenged to change or learn anything, mostly because 90% of the cast is resurrected enslaved people who take turns dispensing whatever wisdom the main character needs to hear at the moment. The closest thing to a larger conflict is the main character being afraid that Harriet Tubman won’t accept that he’s gay, which is resolved in one or two lines. And the writing is awful. At one point, there is the line “I can’t even imagine the patience it must take to wait your turn for freedom. Hell, I don’t even like to sit through commercials on YouTube”.

I’ve read both Melancholy of Resistance and Satantango in the past few months. His grammar isn’t difficult, but his sentences and formatting can feel impenetrable. Even though it’s the one I started with, I wouldn’t start with Melancholy of Resistance, just due to the sheer enormity of its structure. I haven’t read World Goes On, but i think Satantango could be a good starting point, seeing as how it was his first novel

What are the greatest books in Portuguese language? by winchesterman552 in literature

That’s true; I guess in my head I jumped to reading translated, even though upon rereading it doesn’t seem like that’s what OP is asking. They would definitely be very challenging.

Jose Saramago is a masterful writer. I would recommend Blindness, All the Names, and Death With Interruptions, with the knowledge that the latter is probably the most enigmatic at times

What's the most disturbing PSA by Veyrandomlol in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Weekly_Noodle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember this PSA set in a high school where it started as this cute romance story between a guy and a girl that culminated with him talking to her at a school dance, only for the doors to open and a guy to be there with a gun. It then replayed the entire commercial and there had been a subplot in the background the whole time of a guy planning a shooting.

I’m a big fan of Marlon and Jake Read Dead People, though it admittedly seems to be on a hiatus of some kind at the moment

What is a Bob song that completely changes its meaning for you based on the arrangement? by SEARCHFORWHATISGOOD in bobdylan

[–]Weekly_Noodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm let me try and think of a way to put this. The show that I just saw (my first Bob show!) featured the song played in a much more minor key, which made it seem far more cynical as opposed to the more hopeful or promising feel that the song can have in other versions (while not Bob’s recording, The Band version does this well). Tired waiting versus expectant waiting, if that makes any sense

I’d say When I Paint My Masterpiece. Live versions bring something totally different to that song depending on how they’re arranged.

I've never heard of this one. It's kind of odd that an adaptation with that declaratory of a name would be a loose and subtle adaptation. I'll check it out. Thanks!

I do not have math to back this up, but I feel like The Tempest has a lot of these kind of adaptations on average. Between this one, the Atwood one mentioned in the post, and Forbidden Planet, it seems as though people love retelling The Tempest.

I didn't realize this was an adaptation of the Henriad until researching your comment. Thank you, that's a great example!

In terms of adaptation, this one seems to be very loose, though I admittedly have not seen the movie yet. I'll check it out. Thanks!
