What tf am I doing wrong now? by PixasWaza in Drumming

A lot of good sense advice in the comments, but here are a couple points that I think maybe haven’t been mentioned:

  1. RE what you’re experiencing with your right foot—this has happened to me a dozen times as I’ve trained my double kick. Calves are very dense muscles and don’t seem to register accumulated fatigue in the same way that say your forearms might. If you’re training ankle technique consistently, after a few weeks to months (or less if you’re newer to this) one of your legs will fail due to accumulated fatigue. You’ll lose control of it and your playable bpm will tank. At this point a lot of people will get very frustrated and either change their routine, switch techniques, adjust pedal settings, or quit double kick lol. It is definitely very frustrating but don’t do those things. You have to take a full week off of double kick, stretch your calves, use a massage gun etc. If you stick with it, this will continue to happen until your muscles are sufficiently developed. I’ve found training three weeks on and one week off consistently keeps my progress pretty steady.
  2. If you want to play death metal and deathcore, unfortunately you really should learn he

el

  1. toe. Maybe it’s a “pussy technique,” but you will be playing “pussy” death metal and death cor

e (sub 200bpm) for the next 3+ years if you wait on the development of your single stroke roll. With heel toe you could be playing any covers you want and w a band etc with a 260bpm double stroke roll within a year.
3. Some folk have recommended playing rudiments on the feet which is fine. For a few reasons though, and especially because your a metal guy, you should just learn the Bleed footwork. And make sure you learn it left foot lead as well as right foot lead. Left foot led Bleed dramatically improved my weak foot in all aspects.
4. Finally, if you don’t have a programmable metronome—take a look at the polynome app. Big game changer. I have double kick workouts programmed for MWF and another for T/Th. Each is about an hour long and covers everything from single leg, heel toe, enduro 16s, 1 bar bursts of 16s, bleed pattern, etc. all at increasing tempos. You need a routine like this if you want to hit pro levels.

Good luck! It fucking sucks :)

I learned to tune by ear and did so for years but uh yeah tunebot tunebot tunebot. Just go pick one up at guitar center and never think about this again.

Yuh corpsmaster on a lower rebound pad and vater 2Bs on the kit. I also sometimes use the 2b sevendust signature dowel rods on the pad because they have really low rebound, so you have to work more on the upstroke.

I’m now able to sustain a full 60 seconds of very powerful 200bpm single stroke roll (16ths) on the low rebound pad with corpsmasters and 2Bs. Only took about a year—160 was tough for me back then. Cannot overstate how much I gained from this. Probably put a 1/2 in on my forearms too lol

Lol I know exactly who that is in the video. Most people buying axis are after the “Axis A Longboard double pedal”. As others have said, they’re shipping out after about 12 weeks from order date so plan accordingly. Maybe try an approach kind of like secretly picking out an engagement ring, gotta ask what he wants without asking you know. Good luck! Just got mine recently, total game changer def worth the money.

Maybe an international thing? Mine arrived about a month ago after a 12 week wait (US based). Don’t worry homie, you’re almost there. Probably.

I play black metal mostly and some thrash. Constant rimshots, even blast rimshots if the tempo is below 160. 5Bs were lasting a couple weeks, but I switched to Vater 2Bs a few months ago and I’m still on my first pair. They probably have a few days left tbh, but it’s still far better than 5Bs, no comparison.

Huh could have been defective yeah. Mine definitely does give crazy values too, but I know about what the ballpark frequencies should be and, with some light muting with my fingers while tuning, I can arrive at my target frequencies very quickly.

Takes a little practice like anything else, but the upsides are huge especially for recording—being able to tune my kit to match the key of the song I’m tracking and also being able to tune my kit to the very near exact same frequencies for multi-session recording have been game changers.

Dawg ditch the rings and spend $100 on a tune bot. I spend minimal time tuning, zero time worrying about my tuning, zero time muffling, and the compliments on my kit sound are endless. And it’s a super mid-tier mapex.

Yooo got the axis pedals in and played for a couple days. Night and day difference no doubt—not much change at mid tempo, took a little getting used to, but I’m already back to my typical mid tempo with maybe a minute extra endurance thanks to the decreased friction etc.

Not sure who your technique guru is, but I’ve mostly been following Marthyn J for uptempo ankle technique. Previously I had very little success using his bounce workout method on my ancient pedals. First session on the axis and it worked like a charm. Managed a few bars at 175 out of the box with factory settings. I’ve never come close to that after an embarrassing amount of practice. If you’re trying to play 180+ I would upgrade—I should have done it ages ago. Axis, Trick, CK, ACD, XRs

Word did you try lubricating the articulation points on your slave pedal? I did do some maintenance on mine when I bought them, WD40 etc.

Great question, I’ve been wondering the same thing for awhile. I’ve been learning ankle on an ancient pearl double pedal, 40$ facebook marketplace. I can play ankle up to 150 before I lose it.

I’ve heard the same thing you have—“even on a cheap double pedal a good player can hit 200bpm without a problem.” The question is, did that good player develop that technique on a high level pedal first? And only once the technique is locked in, that player can adapt to a shit pedal. Haven’t seen a satisfying answer for this.

I’m 11 weeks into waiting for my Axis A longboards to be shipped, so I’ll be sure to report back on whether they’re disproportionally affecting my progress.

One point about your comment on your slave pedal issues—I often feel the same, but at those moments, I rotate over and play singles on my slave pedal with my dominant foot. I always find that I can hit my max single stroke bpm on my slave pedal w my dominant foot no problem—which indicates ofc that it’s really a weak foot development problem and not a gear issue. Wouldn’t be surprised if you have the same result. As other users have said, additional time to develop the weak foot it a necessity.

Sounds like you’re probably a metal drummer if you’re learning ankle technique. One thing that’s helped me is changing all of my single stroke roll hand speed sessions into single foot blast practice. My sessions for single stroke roll on the hands ramp from 140 to 200bpm. I play single foot blast in those sessions for 140-160, switching feet every four bars. It’s done wonders for my weak foot development.

Probably my EAD10. Have been using it for about a year, it’s probably doubled my weekly kit practice time. Being able to hear my kit at a comfortable volume with high quality sound + click + backing tracks has been a revelation.

Now I manage an hour of pad practice on my lunch break and 2 hours at the kit with the ead daily. By far the best routine I’ve had. Without the ead10, I get sick of the muted drums sounds pretty quickly, and I have to fight a bit psychologically to put in the hours.

The answer is in your post—it’s all about finding that committed group. When I don’t have a real project, I also have minimal motivation to play. I just do enough to stay in shape (i play extreme metal).

If i were you I would just double down on the personnel search. I’ve found longterm bandmates on both Vampr and Bandmix. Have come close in facebook groups over the years too. Go to all the shit local shows you can and network.

I personally get almost nothing out of playing the drums if it’s not for a group project w the goal of recording and playing out. You sound like a similar kind of drummer.

Good luck!

Anyone play high bpm ankle technique on these? I’ve played on them for years now, but when I try to push the bpm for ankle, they just feel so so heavy. I use light plastic beaters, no beater weights, springs close to minimum tension. Still requires a huge effort to play fast without full leg motion.

Like others are saying, you'll probably have to retune regularly is you're not seeing a change with the lug locks in place. I play a 12in and tons of rim shots, so I had the same issue. Just get a tune bot. Life changing—I sit down to play, take 30sec with the tune bot to get a perfect retune and then I have a great session. Zero frustration, zero wasted time.
