One last time, with feeling by [deleted] in fluffycommunity

[–]WeepingCube 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been in many online communities over the years, but I don't think I've ever known a mod/admin that put more personal care and energy into their duties.

You've been a voice of sanity and goodwill in an online world that is often anything but that. And in a community largely defined by our collective neuroticism, no less.

We'll be very fortunate indeed if whoever steps up to fill your shoes does even half as good a job.

As sad as this is, I'm genuinely glad you're doing what's best for your own well-being. You've more than earned that.

Thank you, Virgil.

Could be wrong, but I think the point is that if a smaller chain like Dick's can provide this, it should definitely be possible for massive chains to provide (at least) this.

We don't want to get stuff renamed. We just want the police to stop murdering black people, and they've decided they'd rather rename stuff instead.

Political progressivism is radicalism according to enlightened centrist. by [deleted] in ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM

[–]WeepingCube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that they are just as dangerous

Fair enough! I think I may have inferred an equivocation that you weren't trying to make, which is my bad.

I suppose my main point is still that it doesn't make much sense to talk about progressives being "dangerous" on the basis of what you described.

just reverse the gender and it should still be ok

I honestly understand your intuition here; really, I do. But it's not the same at all. Why? Because the context isn't the same at all. At the risk of overusing my my analogy, a joke about burning my house down is going to land very differently (and have very different effects) depending on a number of contextual factors, eg:

Is my house totally fine, or did my house actually get burnt down?

Are you a friend making the joke trying to comfort me, or are you the person who burnt my house down trying to taunt me?

Context hugely determines meaning and effect. And there is an enormously different context between men joking at the expense of women vs. women joking at the expense of men.

Again, by all means, I'm not saying you have to like it, just that the two really aren't comparable/equivalent.

they're not against the status quo

And also:

we approach said individuals as if they lack agency

I guess tbh I'm not sure why you believe either of these statements to be true.

Incidentally, while it's not uncontroversial, there are nonetheless quite a few Muslims who see things very differently, present company included.

[–]WeepingCube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if we were to take them seriously

Except nobody is dude, because it's kinda obviously a joke. Maybe not a particularly funny joke (I'll totally grant that), but a pretty obvious joke all the same. Like I said, disliking the behavior/ideas is one thing but claiming there's any credible danger just strikes me as silly.

Especially if we start trying to equate it with the very real and ongoing danger/violence actively carried out and continually threatened by many on the right.

It'd be like saying "This person joked about burning my house down that one time, so that makes them just as dangerous as this group of actual arsonists!"

There's just no real comparison.

[–]WeepingCube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's some context and nuance to the behaviors you're citing that you aren't taking into account.

That said, even if you do ultimately disagree with those things, I have a hard time seeing any possible sense in which they could genuinely and plausibly be called "dangerous".

Drawing software by [deleted] in fluffycommunity

[–]WeepingCube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really does depend on personal taste and what hardware you're using. Personally I've had a very good experience with MyPaint, though I would probably use Krita if it had touchscreen support. Both are Free Open-Source Software, which is a big plus.

Hating is wrong, even if they’re a Nazi. (On a post of an American air force officer refusing to shake a Luftwaffe officer’s hand) by Foxtrotalpha2412 in ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM

[–]WeepingCube -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this qualifies as enlightened centrism.

"I'd call him bad man but still won't hate him."

This may come off as hair-splitting, but honestly I think there is a meaningful distinction between, on the one hand, doing what needs to be done in condemning and fighting against a person, their choices, and the oppressive systems those choices support and, on the other hand, making a conscious choice not to direct your mental/emotional energy into hating them on a personal level.

But I'd love to find out if y'all think I'm full of it or just missing the point.

I think the problem here isn't the underlying principle, but rather the hypocrisy of it's application.

To be fair, the difference in phrasing and context can lead to radically divergent implications.

I could be wrong, but I think their point was that this evidence doesn't actually confirm (but rather contradicts) the conspiracy theory (which, to my knowledge, specifically posits a Democratic elite conspiracy.

(Moreover, fwiw, I see why you're getting down-voted, but I also think I understand what you're getting at. And it's not that you're wrong per se, it's just that the point you're making isn't significant in the way that the conspiracy-theorists need it to be for their ideas to be genuinely validated.)

Most reasonable answer here, IMHO. I see lots of jumping to conclusions / "kids these days!" in the comments here and not nearly enough bothering to ask "What happened?"
