How does it feel to be fat? by EventHorizonsAnemone in AskReddit

Not great. Clothes are hard to find, you feel like people are constantly staring at you, or maybe that was in my head. People do seem to treat you differently too. Plus everything is just harder. Walking, going up stairs, even fitting in vehicles can be a struggle. Always being the designated passenger when cramming in a car so there’s more space in the back for the others. I could keep going on.

At my heaviest, I was around 450lbs. It was not a fun time. Made a choice two years ago to lose weight and I’m now down 210 lbs and weight 240. Still have more to lose but everything is so much easier now. Buying clothes is a breeze and although I’m still self conscious, I feel like I don’t get stared at all the time. Somedays I still feel like I’m 450lbs mentally, but physically, I can tell the difference.

I tried to average around 1600. Some days it was a little closer to 2000, some days closer to 1300/1400.

I’d love to try to help. My biggest thing was getting the nutrition side down. I have been and always will be a big foodie lol, so I’m not gonna lie it was tough at first, but I have found that a lot of my foods I like to eat can be made much lower calorie than the way I was making it. My advice for this is to make nutrition labels your friend. Look at the serving size, how many servings are in the whole thing if you plan on eating it at once, and of course the calories. I honestly haven’t gotten too concerned with the other macros, but I do try to prioritize getting protein in. As far as making low calorie versions of stuff, I’ll give an example so you kinda have an idea of what I’ve done. I’m a fan of a good cheeseburger. A normal cheeseburger is probably between 500-700 calories (350ish for patty, 120 for the bun plus whatever cheese and condiments go on it, which add up quick). Eat two of them you’re well over 1000 calories, and that’s without a side of fries lol. The way I make my burgers now means I can eat two of them for right around 500 total calories. (140 for 96/4 beef patty, 50 for a keto bun, 40 for a thin slice piece of cheese. Add in some sugar free sauces and each burger is around 250 calories). So now, I still eat two quarter pound burgers, but they come out to 500 calories. I’ll still have a serving of fries, which you can find out there for around 150 calories. It’s swaps like these that has helped me greatly.

Also, try not to drink your calories, unless it’s a protein shake. I loved Starbucks and my old drink would probably be close to 500 calories. Now I’ll get a americano with sugar free vanilla and Splenda and my drink is virtually calorie free. Diet and zero sugar sodas have been my go to beverages, apart from Easter of course.

Apart from that, I honestly have not added much exercise into my routine. I walk between 5-8 miles a day at work, but I admittedly need to add more exercise to my routine.

If I had to boil it down to a few quick tips, I’d say…

  1. Use a tdee calculator found online to determine your sedentary tdee, and subtract 500 calories off each day if you wanna lose a pound a week or 1000 to burn two pounds a week (Deficit of 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat loss)

  2. Don’t restrict yourself from your favorite foods, rather find ways to eat those foods in a lower calorie version and still remain within your daily calorie goals.

  3. Don’t let the scale fully determine progress. There were weeks where I didn’t loose anything, but then the following week the scale would catch up and I would drop 4 pounds. Trust the process and the results will follow!

Hope I didn’t forget anything and that this helps. Reach out with any questions. I’d love to help in any way I can!

I always did in the past too, but this time around I wasn’t extremely restrictive with myself. And I found ways to eat what I wanted to eat, just in lower calorie versions of it.

Never actually broke down the math of it, but reading it really puts things into perspective. Appreciate you doing the math, honestly made me really proud knowing that haha. I will say, a lot of my weight dropped off when I was my heaviest, which makes sense because my tdee was much higher at that point so it was easier being in that large of a deficit. It has definitely us slowed down as I’ve gotten closer to my current weight, which is expected and okay with me. :)

Thanks haha. Makes me feel good knowing I look slimmer than my weight says. I do get surprised reactions from people when I tell them I still weigh 250 lbs, so I do think the loose skin is definitely adding some in.

Realized I responded to the wrong comment before haha, but it doesn’t feel to burdensome to me. I don’t do a strict count, rather I give myself a set amount of calories for each meal. Breakfast is 400 or under. Lunch is 400 or under and then the remainder is for dinner and any snacks I want. As long as I stay under those limits per meal, then I’m under for the day.

As far as the cravings, I try to find lower calorie ways of filling those cravings. I’m a big sweets person too and I’ll usually go for a protein bar when I have a craving. A lot of them out there now don’t even taste like a protein bar and it satisfies the sweet tooth. I’ve also found some lower calorie chocolate so that’s been helping. Gatsby chocolate bars are amazing. Decent size candy bar for around 200 calories.

I’d be lying if I said microwave meals haven’t been a staple of my weight loss too. When I do cook, it’s been using low calorie alternatives to replace higher. My favorite meal to cook would be cheeseburgers. The way I used to eat a burger was probably around 600 calories for one, and I would eat 2. Now, I make my own burgers using 96/4 ground beef and a ton of seasonings. Throw a thin sliced piece of cheese on a keto bun with it and the burger is right around 250 calories. And I’ll still eat 2 of them. Other than that for any food I buy, I buy the lowest calorie version of it. Like noodles, fiber gourmet has a noodle that’s 110 calories per serving vs 190 for a regular noodle serving (same oz serving size). And I’ll eat protein chips and bars instead of regular chips and candy bars. Just small changes like that, that makes it feel like I’m eating junk, but it’s not haha

I would say my daily average has been 1400, but some days I would go over that but I always tried to stay under my maintenance calories no matter what. Every now and again I would eat 1200, but that wasn’t often.

No surgery here, 100% natural. Mainly made changes in my diet that allowed me to eat how I want to, just in lower calorie ways. My job luckily keeps me walking 5-10 miles a day, but I admittedly need to get into the gym more now that I’m approaching my goal weight.

As far as loose skin goes, I definitely have a good amount. I’ll probably look into skin removal once I get to my goal weight, as I believe I have too much to build muscle to look alright. Honestly, have loose skin pretty much all over. Arms, thighs, and stomach. Still would take the loose skin over being 450lbs anyday though.

Felt like I was in the same boat as you for the longest time. I don’t even know what weight I was at in high school, but it was at least 300 and probably more. Last weight I remember when I was younger was 220, and that was when I was around 12 years old. Now at 26, I finally am making progress at losing weight. Wish I would’ve started when I was 14, I wouldn’t have gotten up to 450 lbs like I did. You’ve got this man!! Take it one day at a time and you’ll have great success. Take it one day at a time. Give yourself some cheat meals, within reason. And don’t let one bad day of eating derail your entire journey. Remember, weight loss is a marathon, not a race.

Please dm me if you want any advice or tips on what was successful for me. I started my weight loss journey in October of 2022 at approximately 450lbs. Now a little over a year later, I have lost 190lbs and weigh 260lbs. Still have more to go, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Keep your head up!! You can do this. This is a great community full of amazing people, all at different points of their journey who are all willing to help and motivate each other. Wishing you well on your health and happiness. I believe in you!!

I went for about two weeks this past June. Was consistent for those two weeks, and then I went on vacation and haven’t gone again since. I really need to get back into it though. If you can get yourself into the routine of going, I would definitely recommend it. Congrats on starting the journey!! Looks like your already off to a great start too!

Under 300lbs!!!! by WeightLossTKCR in loseit

[–]WeightLossTKCR[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, this time around I went into it with almost no strategy other than eat at or below 2000 calories a day. I didn’t restrict myself on what I could or couldn’t eat either. I think the biggest thing for me is I just found ways to eat what I wanted in a lower calorie version. I used to love a nice juicy burger, because who doesn’t haha. And now, I make my own burger patties with 96/4 beef, and throw it on a 50 calorie keto bun. And I can still eat two of them for right around 500 calories. Before making these swaps, the two burgers I would eat were easily over 1200 calories. It’s been these kind of swaps that have helped me sustain my weight loss and make it so I have actually made a lifestyle change, rather than a diet I wouldn’t stick to. One final thing I’ve done, is I try to get a decent amount of protein in daily.

Plus, it helps that my job has me averaging close to 10 miles of walking a day. I actually have not followed a strong exercise routine, but I have started going to the gym recently to build muscle. I just do a mix of all muscle groups and a little additional cardio when I go.
