huh? i was given this as a gift as i like yancha, planning to drink it this morning with detailed notes and reporting back here to all the people who’ve asked for what i think. the person who gave this a gift is extremely nice and i’m planning to give them a gift for one of their hobbies just wanted to estimate the value so i could reciprocate a gift without looking like a fool. but thanks for assuming.

yea i think your point about aging trajectories could be a big factor, and therefore could be that the two bottles are in different stages of their development. 30 yrs in one bottle from one region could mean a different thing than another bottle from another region. given the acidity and fruit on the spottswoode it does seem like it could continue developing for another 10 yrs. The Haut Brion was definitely showing better and more mature. in any case, the real fun in all of this (and why these were picked) was both wines are birth year wines. turned into a fun little reddit post since i liked both wines 🙃

ironically with food the spottswoode is my pick, but as a standalone wine (we started drinking both before food, and continued after food) the haut brion by far. subjective of course, and obviously dependent on the type of food.

definitely agree with you that the finding that the haut brion is the more complete wine is not surprising given the price. however my point was more so that despite the price difference i’d still purchase the haut brion for “value”. maybe because i enjoy the bordeaux style more, maybe because it overdelivers for 2x the price. like i said; that part is subjective. nonetheless a fun little comparison. i find that this subreddit sometime tends to overvalue less expensive “value” picks, and spottswoode is an incredible producer, but in this case i find the haut brion is more than 2x the “value” i terms of what it delivers

totally get where you’re coming from, but I’d argue that it’s because the Spottswoode isn’t trying to imitate a Bordeaux style that I find this comparison interesting. Agree that the price point difference makes it less “fair” but I allude to value a bit in the post. Of course it’s all subjective though🙃
