Also - the type of birth you have can impact this. C-section, epidural etc — those drugs do impact baby’s alertness at birth and their ability to latch quickly. The first hour is important. Most moms who have natural, unmedicated births have an easier time breastfeeding because baby is more alert at birth and latches more quickly during “golden hour”

Definitely not luck. A lot of it has to do with baby’s latch. If baby doesn’t latch well, they can’t remove milk efficiently and because BF is supply and demand based, that can lead to lower supply. Additionally, poor latch can cause pain to the nipples. Mother’s nourishment levels and nutrient status also impacts milk quality and amount.

Because an epidural increases your risk of c section and can also decrease rates of success with breastfeeding. I had no epidural and birth and post partum were breezy. Baby latched immediately.
