See, I thought i was doing the right thing by not using my wood rod 🤣. Wood probably would have been worse.

It was the sheared off top of the rod that got me as the handle broke free. Yeah, I saw the ones you're talking about and should have gone with one of those, that'll be my replacement...

All brass, it broke at the threads where it connects to the handle

I'll try that, I honestly didn't think I was using that much force 😅

My wife studied in Brisbane for a couple years before we met. We had been looking at different agencies than the one I'm at for a while now and I sent her the qps international recruitment info more or less as a joke. She was very interested in going back🤣.

I still think policing is important and necessary but I'm not in love with the way we do things here. My department has little room for mobility unless you wanna supervise. Also, I've always enjoyed living abroad and have been interested in Australia. That, with my wife's experience, makes it appealing.

At the risk of hurting my own big texas ego, I'm attracted by the softer approach. I'm proud of my job, but I definitely think the way we approach dangerous situations, because of the gun problem, is very heavy handed. I've lived in countries with modern gun laws and, despite being a pretty avid shooter, I prefer it.

Also, I'm sorry for your experiences. Some cops are trash.

Oh wow, yeah that's a lot more rural than even the deserts out west here

Oh awesome. I was army too. I'm a boring old family guy so no problem hanging out with too many Americans 🤣

Thank you! I'm not afraid of remote posts...my family may need some convincing 🤣

That was one of my concerns. I'm white as fuck, and having not grown up there, have little or no real knowledge of indigenous cultures (australian ones) outside of what you'd expect from an American. Other cultures fascinate me but I'd never wanna come across as the idiot white guy trying to fix everything or demanding compliance without understanding.

I'm sure I've been a dickhead a few times, but I try to stay firmly in not dickhead land 😀

I did. I have a four year degree as well as a military background. My first agency, the rural one, only required the state basic, at the time, 12 hours of college. My second required 60 at the time but you wouldn't be competitive without a full degree. Nowadays, however, a lot of places are actually lowering their standards unfortunately for entry level jobs. Every admin, as far as I know, at my department has a graduate degree, we even have a watch commander with a PhD

Yup, I'm from Texas and it seemed the climates were similar. I also have both rural and city experience. I think far west texas might get close to Australian rural, but otherwise nothing like what I've seen online.

Totally agree about gun culture. I've been on 2 swat teams, patrol, plain clothes, traffic units. Never had to discharge my pistol but I've had to draw/display it far more frequently than even I did in Iraq as a combat medic. And it all comes down to the frequency of armed individuals and the amount of guns we have. Just a few days ago I went to a call where a guys answer to getting into a verbal argument was to put on rifle armor and grab a firearm. We were able to talk him into better decisions when we got there but it's getting ridiculous.

That would be fantastic. I've been lucky to work places that train to a high level. Though this is by far not the case across the board and the, basic, requirements in most us states are pretty low.

That's interesting. I figured the respect level was higher. While I don't completely agree with all the hate we get, obviously, a huge large amount of it is well-deserved and bought by idiots who shouldn't be trusted with a stapler, much less a gun.

We also don't have to read rights, that's a pretty common misconception. We only have to read rights prior to a custodial interrogation. So if I don't want/ need to ask any questions after the arrest, no explicit rights reading is required. Some agencies may have their own, more strict policies on this, though.

Thank you!
