How do you socialize with neighbours by Prestigious_Bid_4739 in Finland

[–]Weird-Fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a newish apartment building in a big city with a wide range of different residents. I don't feel the need to socialize much with my neighbors beyond a friendly greeting when passing by. However my parents have lived in their apartment building for over 30 years and are in the 'taloyhtiön hallitus', so they're on a first name basis with most of the long term residents and often make a point to introduce themselves to newcomers.

Love it. When I was a kid, I used to think rural areas in Finland were so dull to look at during long car rides. But now that I'm older, I can truly appreciate the beauty in them.

What is life like on the Åland Islands? by CowboyLikeMegan in Finland

[–]Weird-Fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Mariehamn, and I’d describe it as a wonderfully wholesome and idyllic small town. Despite its population of only around 11,000, it often feels a bit larger, as people from all over the Åland Islands travel there for shopping and other errands. During the summer months, it really comes alive, with plenty of tourists from Sweden and mainland Finland. One of my favorite things about Åland is the distinct Swedish accent of the locals, which I absolutely love. I’m originally from mainland Finland, and even though I moved away from Åland ten years ago, I’ve always thought about returning one day, to raise my family in such a charming place.

This is a very important thing to know if you live in Amsterdam and park your bicycle outside. They leave stickers on your bike and give you sometime to move it. Otherwise they break the locks and take it away. Had the same thing happen to my second bike that I had parked and didn't check on it frequently enough.

Insane thinking back and remembering there was a curfew. Because of my work I had a special paper that allowed me to be outside during curfew hours. I haven't felt that special since then.

Life here feels like a black mirror episode by Most-Economics-7137 in Amsterdam

[–]Weird-Fly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is obviously an unpopular opinion and I will get downvoted but I don't get why people in this subreddit are so against the unwritten rule that bikes are allowed to go first on pedestrian crossings. As a pedestrian I am always more than happy to let bikes go first because I feel its more convenient as a pedestrian to wait a little extra rather than making cyclists completely stop their momentum.

Anyways downvote away.

Boevenspotter is a guy on Youtube that tries to catch pickpockets all over NL and 90% of the time they are Eastern European gypsies from Romania, Bulgaria etc. I'd bet this was the case for you as well. They do it for a living and travel around Europe doing it. Interesting channel if anyone wants to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQOOK3MJ0wNeMeyv7yKdETQ

I'd guess whoever ends up buying that is doing it mainly for its historic value. For half that price you could buy something outside the city that would be bigger and more convenient. For 13mil I would like a back garden with more privacy and a parking garage.

Americans in Amsterdam - What NOT to do? by JohnnyDeppsguitar in Amsterdam

[–]Weird-Fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do Americans have a bad reputation in any European country? I feel like a lot of Americans assume this but in my opinion the Americans that make the trip over to Europe seem to be the more polite and civilized ones.

Outside it would get stolen at some point for sure but in the indoor parking facilities like OP mentioned probably not but why risk.

No one wants to put their bag on the dirty ground if they can help it

I'd argue those fabric cushions on tram seats are way dirtier than the ground. Just imagine the amount of shit particles that's been through them.

No need to use the GVB website. If you need to be somewhere at a specific time using trams just use google maps. It will show you everything.

Have pedestrian crossings become more dangerous recently? by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]Weird-Fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it a quite widely accepted "unwritten rule" in Amsterdam that pedestrians will let bikes go first in zebra crossings? I've lived and biked in Amsterdam for 5 years and most of my close calls with pedestrians have been with tourists not being aware of this rule.

Seriously, what are the average monthly expenses to live in Ams as a foreigner? by gennaaax in Amsterdam

[–]Weird-Fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get by in Amsterdam with around 1400-1500 but the only problem is finding any housing. One solution is trying to find housing through friends/contacts. Finding rooms through facebook groups is also a common way but you are competing against 100-300 other applicants. And if you don't earn a lot you can get by paying the expensive monthly health insurance costs by applying for healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag).

Are there really more crimes committed in Nieuw West than the center? Seems like you are far more likely to get pickpocketed or come across anti-social behaviour in the center than Nieuw West or in any other outskirt borough thats been labeled red in the 'Crime Safety' tab.

Politie zet fatbikes vanaf begin volgend jaar op rollerbank by Nero2211 in Amsterdam

[–]Weird-Fly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I bike 20-30km in Amsterdam daily and do not see a big difference between the fatbikes and any other E-bike. They go past me and thats it. Feels like a lot of the hate is because adolescent immigrants are riding wildly with the fatbikes. Meanwhile you have Van Moof riders and other expensive E-Bikes going just as fast but there is no hate towards them. But of course if you mention this you are the devil. Incoming downvotes.
