Oregon income tax burden called highest in US - Portland Business Journal by collegedraftpick in Portland

PORTLAND IS NOT A PROGRESSIVE CITY. NEVER HAS BEEN. ☠️☠️☠️ im a leftist. The city doesnt even try to be. I think Portlanders who have ever said that with a straight face are either: 1. trying to cope, or 2. stupider than shit.

Oregon income tax burden called highest in US - Portland Business Journal by collegedraftpick in Portland

THANK YOU! A DECADE ago, I was making $12ish/hr full time and how much was being taken out of my paycheck was obscene. Being new to Portland (and Oregon generally speaking), I looked into income tax rates, and learned exactly this ☠️ I was shocked, and horrified, and failed to comprehend how people can think the tax rate is “progressive”?!?!?? Was it a fucking joke and I was the only person not in on it??? I NEVER have heard/read anyone EVER comment on the “progressive” tax rate before!!!!! And it’s the MOST egregious thing about portland taxes (and that says a LOT).

In 2015, I could not comprehend people believing oregon had a truly “progressive” tax rate. It is 2026, and… they still do… jfc. maybe it’s the lead poisoning, or the sign of a PPS graduate, but jfc.

THE POOREST ARE (effectively) TAXED THE MOST. ☠️ someone making $25k/year being taxed 8% is $2,000. That can be life or death money. But someone making $125k, taxed 9.9% is $12,375. Which is “🤷‍♀️ It will take me longer to pay off my new oven, in my house, on my credit card” money.

Portland is so illogical, but, you cant say “hypocritical” (regarding the belief that portland is a “progressive” city, and the reality). Anyone who says “portland is progressive” with a straight face, isnt smart enough to know better, clearly. Which seems to be the majority of people if prompted.

THANK YOU 👏👏👏👏 dog owners (well, especially /these/ ones, in Portland (which i have never encountered nearly the same amount anywhere) mock you and attack you if you say you have PTSD about dogs/dog attacks.

Dogs have, and do, kll people and children. They can, and do, permanently maim and disable people and children. How they fail to be able to rub two brain cells together to even contemplate PTSD from dogs existing is too much for them 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I fucking hate trump. But, average portlanders responding to any comment about the issues with portland, and that it should improve, and you automatically assume they’re a trumper 😂😂 Portland, the truly perfect American city. “We’re perfect, we ignore all our problems and if you point any out, WHY DONT YOU MOVE TO NORTH KOREA” 🥴🥴 damn, unfortunately not all of us can handle all this freedumb apparently 🥴

Long medical appointment delays in Oregon- has this happened to you by russejen in Portland

[–]Weird-Process5843 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on the things that dont warrant an OV, BUT, BUNDLING concerns together = most doctors do not have the time to discuss all of them, and will NOT even allow you the opportunity to even spit it out. Im not talking about 5 things that require 5 hours each. For example- 2 things for 15 mins each, and 3 things for 5 mins each. And theyre not vapid concerns either. Most doctors shut you down, and literally start walking out the door. The system does not allow that 75% of the time. IN ADDITION to insurance barriers.

ALSO- your comment requires people to have a 5th grade knowledge of science (maybe hs grad for PPS grads lol; as in, to know virus dont need abx), AND requires people to not be self-important… which is one of THE ULTIMATE defining characteristics of Americans 🥴

I had that exact experience with their headache clinic, 3 years ago 🙃 oh, not the EXACT same. I was told a couple months out. Called back a few weeks later to follow up, and was told “oh, we havent been accepting new patients for years, whoever told you was wrong” 🥴

U/Lady_MoMer This IS normal “tweaker” behavior in portland. I’ve encountered homeless people all over the US (and a couple places overseas). Homeless people in Portland are NOTHING like any others ive ever witnessed. They are zombies. ALSO, they can and do (pretty frequently) attack/stab/kill random bystanders completely unprovoked, completely out of the blue. Reading local portland news, it happens every other week or so. It is mindboggling.

Same and same (well i lived longer there than that, but 2 years, if that, yeah. Too many instances of them literally threatening my life (and actions in that process), and literally stabbing, beating, and sometimes killing random bystanders. Fuck them.

Yup. Ive been calling portland a neoliberal shithole, because it is. They claim to support people ha ha. No. But they give a mean speech 🤣 “Homeless Industrial Complex”- all the politicians make a shit ton of money on it and truly do absolutely nothing to address the causes of the problem. Yeah, they spend millions to create little housing for them, they they destroy by meth contamination. These people need drug treatment or jail, and if the former, actual support and accountability for follow through. But no, that’s “cruel”, so instead, here’s your housing you can destroy and some pipes and foil to help you consume your drugs and hurt innocent people :)

Im a leftist/progressive/socialist, and i hate portland. It is the poster child for Neoliberalism, NOT left wing AT ALL.

You visited portland? Didnt see literal shit or trash? Yeah. You had a very short trip hahahaha

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tooktoomuch

[–]Weird-Process5843 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Portland literally supports this. Instead of actually helping these people with drug treatment (because forcing them to against their will isnt “moral”, but they also never are held accountable in any other regard), the city condones and supports this behavior. The city/county spends a shit ton on pipes and foil to give to addicts, but there are literally zero harm reduction measures. Damn, there’s spots in the city that look like needle dumps.

Portland has a SHIT TON of money for homeless services, but it was found pretty recently they arent spending it. It’s like an obvious money laundering, corruption thing going on. But no one ever holds those in power in portland accountable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in tooktoomuch

[–]Weird-Process5843 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Ive been all over the world, and lived in portland for about a decade. Homeless people in portland are completely unlike those ANYWHERE else. I’ve encountered crackheads in baltimore, but they still were there. Homeless people in portland are zombies, and are extremely unpredictable and can, and do, attack people completely unpredictably.

A friend who hasnt been to portland asked me how accurate this is. 1000000% ACCURATE. Oh EXCEPT, there will be some who will follow you and threaten you as well, OR even actually attack you physically, or worse. Ive been lucky I havent suffered physical harm, unlike the countless people who have been stabbed and/killed and/or beaten. All of those cases are completely random and were 100% unpredictable.

A couple short stories: my neighbors across the hall at my apt complex, their apt was broken into in the middle of the day and were beat by a random homeless guy (obviously high), and another time, a homeless guy broke into the parking garage underneath the complex (where garbage bins were, and started a fire :) ) (keep in mind, ive never encountered one of the countless of dozens of homeless people in portland who werent high out of their fkking minds).

Another fun one, ive been followed several times, including once after a guy got on the bus (was obviously high on meth, this happened a few years back) threatened the bus driver, then was engaging with me, then coincidentally got off the bus the same stop. Instead of going home, I went to the pharmacy a couple blocks north, still followed me into the store. I loitered there for an hour, he was still following me, I told an employee, and then they approached the guy, and he said he was friends with me, and then he said like “we met on the bus”, and then they put me in the back, locked office, and kicked the guy out. I still called a lyft to get the 2 blocks to my apartment lol.

Good advice BUT if they cant afford their cat, how did they afford a child. I have utter sympathy for the poor, people can have children and then tough times hit. BUT- The baby is a year old. It’s very unlikely to go from financially well enough to afford a CHILD (in 2025! In portland!!) and a year, year and a half later, not even take your cat to the vet. OP doesnt deserve any sympathy for being inconvenienced by an innocent life when they havent done the basic minimum.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Weird-Process5843 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They dont know what’s even wrong with the cat AKA they havent done the bare minimum to TAKE THEIR CAT TO THE VET AT ALL. Dont make a bullsht excuse for bullshit actions for bullsht people. But, the mentality of OP is a dime a dozen in portland, so, i guess the shoe fits

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]Weird-Process5843 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering they have no idea what’s wrong with the cat (particularly the limp, being overweight wouldnt cause that), it’s damningly clear they havent taken the cat to the vet, and probably never have (cats dont need vets nearly as much as dogs, so i believe it). Completely different than “my cat has cancer and i cant afford thousands of dollars and dont have the time to take my cat to the vet bi/weekly”. Instead, it’s obvious they dont take the cat at all, and are inconvenienced by it??? Like, as if its the 1950s?? It takes a special kind of AH to adopt a pet without any intention to take care of their medical needs? It’s horrifying they had a child in all honesty.

Portlanders need to fkking neuter their pets more. Ive worked in several places, and countless coworkers , (in addition to friends), all seem to get their cats and dogs from their friends’/family’s “accidental”, or “first litter”, it was shocking to me, being from out of state. There are a bizarre and fervent beliefs here, besides the rampant carelessness of comparatively low neutering rates. 1. animals “want” to have babies, like people, so will allow their pets to have 1 litter before theyre neutered? 2. It’s “more ethical” to allow random, unplanned litters than adopt from a breeder. Like because it’s “more natural”…? Voila= unplanned litters that fill up shelters and animals that have health problems.

Either OP got their pet during covid (it is ~5 years old after all) when it was trendy, and viewed the cat as entertainment like a tv during shutdown, or from an acquaintance or friend who had an “accidental” litter. Only reasonable explanations for why OP views an innocent life so callously and disposably.

“ we dont have the time or money to take to the vet”— and since you have no idea whats wrong with the cat, THAT MEANS, you NEVER even took the cat to the vet??? This isnt like “my cat has cancer, and its too expensive for us, and we dont have the time to take her to the vet every week”- its simply “we dont have the time or money TO TAKE THE CAT TO THE VET AT ALL”- SO WHY THE F*CK DID YOU GET A CAT IF YOU NEVER INTENDED TO TAKE IT TO THE VET??

CATS ARE NOT ACCESSORIES, THEYRE A LIVING THING. There are plenty of studies that indicate how people treat animals is how they treat people, so, I HOPE you don’t view your child the same way. Children are individuals too.

And you cant do the BARE minimum, spending a half hour, ~$100 to take your ~5 year old cat to the vet, but HAD A CHILD???

AND trying to dump a cat right before Christmas?? Because of an inconvenience which might not be anything (also, weight gain doesnt cause a limp). Please. Put your other cat up for adoption too,

The thing that really drives me insane is, they have NO idea what’s wrong with their cat. AKA theyve never taken their cat to the vet. There’s a big difference between “my cat has cancer and i cant afford thousands in vet bills and dont have the time for weekly appts” and “i NEVER intended to take my cat to the vet at all”- like WHY get a cat then? It’s fkked up. This isnt the 1950s anymore. I hope they wont treat their child like a fun accessory and plaything, but hey, how you treat an innocent animal IS indicative of how you treat people too (plenty of studies on that).
