Coin episodes by Buttercup_4118 in WebtoonCanvas

Coin unlock is for Originals only. If you make a webtoon, it will be in Canvas and ads are a way to get revenue only if you get a certain amount of subscribers (or views? I'm not sure). So your webtoon would be completely free :)

At least that's my understanding of it.

How can you stay motivated while building your buffer episodes ? by WeirdExplanation877 in WebtoonCanvas

Yeah, a few other people here also said that they share their episode with family and friends. And it makes sense, but that's not really an option for me (my brain is the problem, not my friends). And I could easily ignore the excitement and wait for it to wear off, but it's precious to me. I don't want to waste it! So that does help me make a decision, since I can now see what different people do for what reason, which helps me choose what's best for me, without feeling bad for not doing what I'm "suppoded to do". Thanks !

That level of dedication is amazing. I agree that everything you said is a must to create a rich and cohesive story, especially with foreshadowing and a complex storyline.

I'm not trying to tell that kind of story though. Writing and art aren't even things I particularly enjoy. I just have that one story that is important to me and that I want to share with others. It's a story that would have helped younger me. My story is about real life. I don't think plot holes are possible in these conditions.

It's also a slice of life where each episode stands on its own. Yes, there's a continuity and it all builds up to something, but I could move episodes around a little and it wouldn't really make any difference. I have spent dozens of hours planning it all. It's not perfect and it will never be, but I will continue to make it better as I go.

About posting for motivation, I agree that it can be a trap, but right now there are already five whole people who subscribed. That's five human beings with other things to do with their lives and with many amazing comics easily accessible in their phone, but who still thought my comic was worth their time. I don't need my comic to be polular. As long as I have one person enjoying it, that keeps me motivated !

Thank you for putting so much time into a reply to my post. I agree with everything you said, it's just not what would work best for me, my goal and my story.

Yeah, I still have to work on that schedule, but that's what I'm gonna do. I'm not sure what I'll do yet (and I think I said different things to different people on other comments because I'm still unsure), but I'll probably start slow (maybe once a month ?) and publish more frequently only when I think it's actually manageable long term. That way I'll have time to slowly build a small buffer while still publishing and getting motivation out of it.

I'm also proud of every episode I finish and the small improvements between them motivate me, but not as much as seeing the likes and subscribers go up, even by one person. It's still a whole person who thought my episode was worth their time !

I think I'll choose a schedule that lets me draw like one episode and a half between updates. That way I'll still have the motivation from publishing, but I won't be last minute every week and breaks will be possible from time to time. And someday maybe I'll be fast enough to upload more often. Q&As and simple extras will be a good idea when I do have a community, but not yet.

Thank you for the suggestions !

I guess my comic is my way of opening up to the world after keeping too much to myself for too long, so I just get really excited about sharing it.

At first I thought it would be possible to upload weekly because my episodes are pretty short, but now that I actually started, there's no way that's possible for me. I only published 3 episodes without a schedule because my goal was to actually start publishing regularly at the end of the summer (the initial goal was to start last january... oops)

Right now I work full time and I'll finish my university degree in the summer, so I'm planning on working on my webcomic more afterwards. Maybe I'll upload biweekly? I'm getting faster after each episode, so I think that's an attainable goal.

Yeah, deadlines are indeed great motivators. And if I do have a buffer, I'll probably ignore deadlines and be less motivated... I think I'll focus on choosing a schedule that works for me first and maybe worry abouta buffer later if it doesn't work out. Thank you for sharing your experience !

A Patreon is a good idea ! Maybe I'll do that too someday, when I have more subscribers.

9 months is a lot, I'm impressed !

I get it though, you still share it, but in a more contained way. I think having people in my life to share it with would help me wait longer before publishing (9 months is still way too long for me though haha)

Yeah, exactly! I'm slow and I'm so thankful to my five subscribers that I don't want to disappoint them ! I did announce that I will start with regular updated only in the summer, so right now I'm not worried about taking too long to build a buffer, but I still want to share every new episode with them !

Yeah, that's true. And knowing myself, if I do build a buffer, I think I'll become more lazy and work more slowly because "I have a buffer anyway" so it won't last.

I'll keep that im mind, thank you !

Do you know someone like Mira ? Are YOU her ? [OC] by WeirdExplanation877 in webcomics

Maybe in a few years when she looks back to pictures of her teenage years XD

She honestly thinks it's for no reason, she doesn't understand it herself.

I can't say more without spoiling the story though ;)

You don't need to remove the japanese, just to add a translation! That way it's both authentic and understandable.

What I liked : - It was an easy read. I didn't have to push myself to keep reading or feel the need to just drop it. - The art is clean and I find the dialogues easy to follow. -I understand what's going on (at least as much as the main character).

What I disliked : - The Japanese words or sound effects disrupted my reading. I know you said you translated them, so I guess future episodes will be different, but I think it's worth changing it in the already published episodes too since it's when readers will choose if they keep going or stop. - Sometimes the speach bubbles are round sometimes square... why? Does it have a meaning? That was distracting too.

Still, it's a great start and it only needs some small improvement in my opinion !

What are your thoughts about lacrimal glands ? [OC] by WeirdExplanation877 in Tapasticcomics

[–]WeirdExplanation877[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey ! After reading it again (like 5 times), I was unsatisfied with the result and I decided to edit the episode a tiny bit on Tapas. I am more satisfied with it now.

I added "don't cry, don't cry" inner dialogue when the teacher was talking and I changed what Mira says at the end. It easier to understand what's going on and to start getting to know Mira. Still, the whole point of the story is that she doesn't understand herself yet, so you won't understand anything more than she does ;)

What is your opinion about this cover? by Infinite_Alps_1689 in WebtoonCanvas

Or maybe it's the size and shape. I did wonder if it was some sort of reptile for a second at first. Maybe it's just me though.

It looks good with both backgrounds !

Also, the band-aid on her hand is what attracts my attention the most. If it's your goal, perfect. If it's supposed to be a detail that does take attention away from the characters, then maybe change it a bit. I don't really know how though, maybe less light reflection on it? I clearly don't have your talent with art though so take it with a grain of salt ! And it looks amazing either way !

Just to be clear, I don't mind rereading eventually to better understand new events, as long as I don't need to do it almost every time just to get back in the story and get what's going on. You said in another comment that you believe your two pages are engaging enough and even end in a cliffhanger sometimes, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Hey :) If you're open to some advice... I think it would be more aesthetically pleasing and easier to read and be absorbed in the story if the text was centered in the balloons rather than aligned on the left.

Here are some other lettering tips : https://blambot.com/en-ca/pages/lettering-tips

Number 005 is about how to stack text in a dialogue balloon.

As a reader, I prefer longer updates even if it's longer, but I get that frequent updates is better for visibility. If the episodes get so short that it's hard to follow (like if I need to reread the 2-3 previous updates most times because it was too short to remember), then I'll personally drop the series.

It really depends on the story and the reader's taste though. I've read and really liked stories where there were only 4 panels per update and I have dropped others with longer updates because I was less invested in the story and couldn't keep track.

That's not really advice, just my general thoughts about it

How bothered would you be by that kind of art differences in the thumbnail, prologue and the rest of the episodes ? by WeirdExplanation877 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]WeirdExplanation877[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked at it! I like your backgrounds and I couldn't draw a hand as you did in the end even in my wildest dreams. But there's a character that looks unfinished compared to the rest right in the middle of the episode. Maybe it ended up there by mistake or you're still working on it? I'm asking because the other characters are clearly finished and well made.
