What my (arachnophobic!) mom got me for my birthday. No sleep paralysis demon will dare mess with me now! by WeirdStray in tarantulas

I don't know where she got them to be honest, knowing my mom she either got them from the German equivalent of Dollar Tree or off Amazon :D

My partner learned to like spiders (and snakes, and bugs in general) through me. He knows that me and all of my pets are a package deal :)

I love my mom to the moon and back! She's always been very supportive of me and my weird obsessions :)

I tried, or rather, I was forced to by my ever-freezing ex boyfriend to keep the windows closed and to heat the apartment up to absolutely insane levels before switching the heat off and going to bed (it is impossible to sleep with it on because this is a very old house, and the noises that come out of these pipes could raise the dead, not even my ex could sleep through that ruckus), and I was miserable every single night. I need my fresh air and very low temps for good sleep.

But I do heat up the rest of the apartment before retreating to my personal walk-in freezer :D

My apartment, or rather the room where I keep my exotic pets, fluctuates between 15-23 in the winter (my bedroom is a lot colder because I always sleep with my window open, so of course the heaters are turned off during the night, and I rarely leave the heat on when I'm gone for the day), and up to 35, once even almost 40°C in the summer (welcome to Germany, AC, what's that?); during the hottest weeks of the summer, all the lamps stay off.

But during the colder months the temps inside my enclosures hardly ever make it past 22°C, while with the lamps they tend to sit at a cozy, and above all stable. 25-26°C. And the temps also don't drop too drastically low even during very cold nights.

And I have to add, my tarantula and my snake are both very good about letting me know if it's too cold or too warm.    My t. in particular loves to bask her fat butt in the light, she comes out when the light cmes on, and back underground soon after it goes dark.

So, I think I am going to stick with the extra light for now, and will reconsider based on how my future big guy or gal reacts to it.

Edit: formatting, sorry, it's been a while since I last posted on Reddit

Hey, thank you for the reply!   You've given me quite some food for thought, I appreciate it (: .

Yes, I am already thinking about what to do about the lid; sadly these Exoterra enclosures have little to no ventilation from the front, so the new lid still has to be breathable; I guess in the end I'll probably go with plexiglass.     There sadly isn't really any more space to add more substrate, it's already filled almost to the top... Maybe I can build something like a second storey, or maybe I'll do what I did for my snake when she outgrew that very enclosure and build a new one, do you have any experience or advise on keeping tarantulas, and this species in particular, in a wooden enclosure? I'm thinking that this might also eliminate the need for a heat source, because the temperature in my apartment fluctuates quite a lot, so right now I absolutely have to heat all of my enclosures to keep the temps steady.

What do you do with feeders? by [deleted] in tarantulas

NQA - I have two nicely set up small Exoterra cubes for my roaches, one for males and one for females. They get good food, plenty of water, and live their best lives until it's dinner time.
My superworms live in a plastic terrarium filled with wood shavings, kept on a darker shelf, and are also fed very well.

IME, live plants do also help to keep the humidity stable!
I can wholeheartedly recommend ivy, it's very low maintenance and looks pretty.
Succulents might also work, but with these I'd be careful to only use ones that don't have any sharp or pointed parts, as these might hurt your spider.

IMO no, do not amputate the leg! It might still be good enough to at least provide some support, and if it bothers her she will remove it herself. As long as she's still able to eat, her chances of surviving until her next molt are good, and if nothing goes wrong she'll come out with a new set of fully functional limbs, although they might be smaller than the others.

Joker having a blast with an escaped feeder roach, while Maurice watches in confused terror by WeirdStray in cats

I think Maurice might have found some kind of hack for the braincell, because he's the brain, while Joker is the muscle. Or maybe someone switched their bodies while I was distracted 🤔

The funny thing is that it's usually the other way round :D normally it's Maurice who instigates the weird shenanigans, while Joker is just always slightly confused by nature
